Journal of the Korean Academy of Family Medicine 1997;18(1):85-85
BACKGROUND: Pap smear is well known as a useful method for early detection of the cervical cancer and known to be widely performed by women. But the cervical cancer is the most common cancer in Korean women until now. So we surveyed to find out the status of womens practice and the result of Pap smear. METHODS: A questionnaire was filled up by the 270 women who had taken Pap smear from June to July in 1994 at the department of family medicine of Kyung Hee Medical Center. The family physicians gynecological findings at Pap srnear and the results of Pap smear were obtained. Af ter then we analyzed the data by SAS(Statistical Analysis System). The data which were not answered at each item were excluded in the analysis of each item. RESULTS: Among the 270 women, thirties were 98 persons(36.3%), forties were 115 persons(42.6%). The women who had never been taken Pap smear before were 34.6%. At the age performed Pap smear first, 30-39 years old was most common as of 39.8%. In the interval of Pap smear among the performed, 2 years interval was 36.8%. The medical facility usually being performed Pap smear was obstetrics and gynecological clinic as of 49.7%. At the opinion of int, erval which they think they should take Pap smear, the women answered that 1 year interval was appropriate were 50.7% and the opinions of the experienced group were statistically different from those of the non-experienced group(P<0.01). Gynecological findings showed normal in 74.8%, the cytological results of Pap smear showed class I as of 88.9%, class II 6.3%, class III 4.4% and class IV 0.4%. CONCLUSIONS: Almost of them knew correctly the appropriate interval of Pap smear they should take, but the practice rate was very low. They had good results in the final cytological results of Pap smear, but the cervical cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in Korean women until now. So they should continuously get public informations and be educated to take Pap smear at the appropriate interval for the reduction of death due to cervical cancer.

Journal of the Korean Academy of Family Medicine 1997;18(2):212-220
BACKGROUND: The psychosocial factors to the musculoskeletal disease has been studied recently as well as environmental factors. Type A behavior pattern which is an independent risk factor for coronary heart disease may have relation to musculoskeletal disease, and the authors studied the relations for these variables. METHODS: The studied subjects were 511 housewives sampled without intention at Taejon city and we excluded 76 persons who had experiences of trauma at neck, shoulder or back region during recent one year on the data analysis. The musculoskeletal symptoms and type A behavior pattern were quantified as the score and the Spearmans correlation coefficient was used to reveal the statistical significance for the relations. RESULTS: Type A behavior pattern had the relation to the symptoms of neck, sboulder, and back region. For the sociodemographic variables, the relations were significant for the group of younger age, lower socioeconomic level, and the group having full time job, lower body mass index. CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that type A behavior pattern was the possible risk factor for musculoskeletal disease, but more studies will be necessary to confirm the influence of behavior pattern to musculoskeletal disease.

Korean Journal of Health Promotion 2012;12(3):109-114
BACKGROUND: With the rapid increase in the elderly population and the ensuing increase in osteoporosis and subsequent fractures, there has been a rise in socioeconomic costs. This study evaluated the relationship between osteoporosis and physical function in 66-year-old Korean women. METHODS: All of the 193 Korean women aged 66 years were recruited from life-transition health examinations from May to December, 2007. Background information was collected through a self-administered questionnaire; and height, weight, and waist circumference were measured. Bone mineral density of the lumbar spine was measured with the Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry and the 'timed up and go (TUG)' and 'one-leg balance (OLB)' tests were administered. Risk factors for osteoporosis were analyzed by correlation coefficients and binary logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The prevalence of osteoporosis for 66-year-old women was 25.9%. A short stature and lower body mass index (BMI) were associated with osteoporosis of the lumbar spine. A longer time to complete the TUG test (>10 second) was associated with a 4-time higher prevalence of lumbar osteoporosis, which was not observed with the OLB test. CONCLUSIONS: One out of four 66-year-old Korean women had osteoporosis. A longer TUG time, short stature, and lower BMI were associated with osteoporosis.
