Soft denture liners or conditioners may be valuable therapeutic materials. The life of these liners is short and varies, but it can be extended by the use of a mono-poly(polymethyl methacrylate coating material). This study determined whether coating three temporary soft denture liners with mono-poly affected the resiliency of soft liners, and evaluated the ability of mono-poly to prevent water absorption and alcohol loss from the underlying soft liners. 20x12mm cylindrical specimens of Coe-Soft, Soft-Liner, Coe-Comfort soft lining materials were made and divided into two groups of mono-poly uncoated(control) and mono-poly coated specimens. Specimens were immersed in water and compressed on an instron universal testing machine and weighted at initial, 24 hours, 1 week, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks. resiliency was determined by measuring the energy absorbed by the soft liners when stressed to a specific yield point. Mono-poly coating significantly increased the resiliency of the Soft-Liner, but had no effect on the other soft liners. Among the 3 soft liners, Soft-Liner showed the hightest resiliency and modulus of elasticity. The weight loss in Soft-Liner was the least among the 3 liners, and the weight loss in Coe-Soft was decreased by monopoly coating.

Korean Journal of Legal Medicine 2013;37(4):220-223
Serum is free of cellular components. Because DNA is located in the nuclei or mitochondria of cells, serum could be assumed DNA free. Few previously published case reports to date have used serum for DNA typing. Here, we report on human genotyping via short tandem repeat (STR) analysis using serum as a sample, and discuss problems involved in the process.

Allogenic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation could be used instead of allogenic bone marrow in treatment of leukemia in children. This 10-year-old female patient with high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia received a myeloablative regimen followed by allogenic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation from an HI A-identical sibling donor. Neutrophil recovery to greater than 500/pL occurred at day 11 and platelets recovered to greater than 20,000/pL at day 13. Allogenic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation can be performed safely and may result in a rapid neutrophil and platelet engraftment, without any apparent increased risk of acute graft versus host disease.

7.Two Cases of Cerebral Infarctions from Vertebral Artery Dissection Induced by Severe Coughing.
Korean Journal of Stroke 2012;14(3):152-155
Vertebral artery dissection (VAD) is a rare cause of young age stroke. This risky condition can be caused by even minor head or neck trauma. None of the previous studies has reported cough-related intracranial vertebral arterial dissection in Korea. We present two cases of cerebral infarctions from VAD induced by severe coughing. We should be alert to clinical manifestations of VAD to make proper diagnosis and to recognize coughing as a potential cause of VAD.

9.Detection of Respiratory Viruses in Children by Multiplex Reverse Transcriptase PCR, Direct Immunofluorescence Assay, and Shell Vial Culture.
Korean Journal of Clinical Microbiology 2009;12(3):110-115
BACKGROUND: Direct immunofluorescence assay (DFA) and shell vial culture (SVC) have been used to diagnose respiratory viral infections. Recently a multiplex reverse transcriptase PCR (mRT-PCR) for 12 respiratory viruses has been introduced. We evaluated the diagnostic usefulness of these methods. METHODS: Among 275 nasopharyngeal aspirates (NPAs) received from pediatric patients during the 3-month period from May through July, 2007, 122 samples were selected so as to include diverse viruses and varying numbers of DFA-positive cells for mRT-PCR. Also, the results of the 85 NPAs that had been analyzed by both DFA and SVC were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: Detection rates for the seven major respiratory viruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza virus A and B, parainfluenza virus 1, 2, and 3, and adenovirus by DFA vs mRT-PCR were 32.0% and 55.7%, and by DFA vs SVC were 32.9% and 40.0%. A number of adenovirus detected by DFA vs mRT-PCR were 12 and 22, and by DFA vs SVC were 6 and 18. A number of RSV detected were 3 and 6, and 13 and 8, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: mRT-PCR detected the respiratory viruses at the highest rate, followed by SVC and DFA in a decreasing order. However, DFA and multiplex PCR were more sensitive than SVC for RSV, while SVC was more sensitive than the other methods for adenovirus.

Korean Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine 2020;28(2):116-125
Objectives:
:Self-poisoning is the leading cause of visits to the emergency departments after a suicide attempts. This study is aimed to compare the patient characteristics according to the category of drugs ingested by the patients who attempted suicide.
Methods:
:All medical charts were retrospectively reviewed from patients who visited the emergency center, at Seoul Medical Center, due to intentional self-poisoning from April of 2011 to July of 2019. We investigated the information regarding the subtype and quantity of the intoxication drug, how it was obtained, suicidal history, and psychiatric history, as well as, sociodemographic information. Variables were compared between prescription drug (PD) and non-prescription drug (NPD) poisoning groups.
Results:
:The mean age of the NPD poisoning group was significantly lower than that of the PD poisoning group. The patient ratio of those enrolled in national health insurance and living with spouses were significantly higher in the NPD poisoning group. Compared to the NPD poisoning group, the PD poisoning group had a higher incidence of mental illnesses, underlying diseases and ratio of involuntary visit to the emergency department.Among the prescription drugs, the benzodiazepine poisoning group had a higher rate of self-prescription than the non-poisoning group, while the zolpidem poisoning group had a higher rate of the using someone else’s prescription than other drugs. Each single drug poisoning group (benzodiazepine, zolpidem, and antidepressant singleagent) had a higher rate of no mental illness than each of the mixed-poisoning group.
Conclusions
:Guidelines for regulating non-prescription drugs are needed as a matter of suicide prevention. Also, this study suggests that clinicians need to be careful when issuing prescriptions and should suicidal risk according to patients’ characteristics, duration of follow-up and type of drug packaging.
