This study was undertaken to document the effect of transforming growth factor-beta2 (TGF-beta2(TGF-beta2) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) on the proliferation of pig retinal pigment epithelial cells (RPE). Whereas bFGF increased the proliferation, TGF-beta2 showed the inhibitory effect on the proliferation The inhibitory effect of TGF-beta2 disappeared in RPE subcultured with 10ng/ml of bFGF. Both TGF-beta2- and bFGF-specific antisense oligonucleotides blocked the autocrine effect of the growth factors. PLC-71 -specific antisense oligonucleotide inhibited the effect of TGF-beta2 and bFGF. Genistein inhibited the effect of TGF-beta2 and bFGF in dose-dependent man, ner. The data suggest the involvement. of in PLC-/1 and tyrosine kinase in signalling.

Mixed tumor of the skin (chondroid syringoma) is a rare benign tumor composed of epithelial elements intermingled with myxoid or cartilagenous stroma which is not separated by basement membrane. It had been believed to originate from the eccrine gland but recently, it was described to be of apocrine gland origin in case of showing apparent apocrine secretion. We report on a 63-year-old man with a tumor on the right upper eyelid showing typical microscopic features of mixed tumor of the skin. Many apocrine decapitation secretions were seen in tubular structures and follicular differentiations were also seen, which represents the common origin of folliculo-sebaceous-apocrine unit.

Tubular apocrine adenoma is a well-circumscribed intradermal benign tumor with tubular structures showing apocrine differentiation. Most of those cases occur on the scalp in middle aged women. Histologically, tubular structure with apparent apocrine decapitation secretion, cystic dilatation of tubule, and connection with epidermis are the characteristic features of tubular apocrine adenoma. We presented a case of tubular apocrine adenoma that had recurred after incomplete excision. It showed apocrine decapitation secretion histologically and both eccrine and apocrine differentiation on immunohistochemical study.

Ota nevus is a dermal melanocytic harmatoma derived from neural crest melanoblast and involves skin innervated by the trigeminal nerve. Although most cases are clinically apparent at birth or around puberty, acquired lesions in adults have been rarely reported. We reported a 73 year-old Korean man with Ota nevus of the face and scalp that onset in his eighth decade and accompanied multiple solar comedo of the face.

The purpose of this article is to review imaging findings and to discuss the optimal imaging methods for craniosynostosis. The discussion of imaging findings are focused on ultrasonography, plain radiography, magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography with 3-dimensional reconstruction. We suggest a strategy for imaging work-up for the diagnosis, treatment planning and follow-up to minimize or avoid ionized radiation exposure to children by reviewing the current literature.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of different light direction, exposure times and setting times when using plasma arc light on shear bond strength of metal brackets. 240 extracted human premolars were randomly assigned to one of 16 groups. Standardized brackets were bonded to enamel using different light curing units (Plasma arc light and Halogen light), exposure times (Plasma arc light 2, 4, 6 seconds and Halogen light 20 seconds), and light directions (Vertical direction [V] and Oblique direction [O]). 8 groups were tested after 5 minutes and the remaining 8 groups after 24 hours. The metal brackets were bonded with Transbond XT. Shear bond strength was measured by a universal testing machine. The results were as follows: There were no differences between the shear bond strengths of the Vertical groups (V) and Oblique groups (O), regardless of exposure times and types of light curing units (p > 0.05). The shear bond strength of the group with 2 seconds of plasma light were significantly lower than other exposure time groups (p < 0.05). The shear bond strength tested after 5 minutes was lower than after 24 hours (p < 0.05). The Adhesive Remment Index (ARI) score showed no statistically significant difference among the different groups. The results of this study suggested that the light direction of plasma arc light had no influence on the shear bond strength of metal brackets to enamel, and exposure times more than 4 seconds produced shear bond strengths similar to those produced with a conventional halogen curing light.

Bile acids are major constituents of bile and known to help absorb dietary fat and fat-soluble vitamins in the gastrointestinal tract. In the past few decades, many studies have shown that bile acids not only play a role in fat digestion but also function as broad range of signal transduction hormones by binding to various receptors present in cell membranes or nuclei. Bile acid receptors are distributed in a wide range of organs and tissues in the human body. They perform multitudes of physiological functions with complex mechanisms. When bile acids bind to their receptors, they regulate fat and glucose metabolism in a tissue-specific way. In addition, bile acids are shown to inhibit inflammation and fibrosis in the liver. Considering the roles of bile acids as metabolic regulators, bile acids and their receptors can be very attractive targets in treating metabolic disorders. In the future, if roles of bile acids and their receptors are further clarified, they will be the novel target of drugs in the treatment of various metabolic diseases.

Pityriasis rotunda (PR) is a rare disease characterized by persistent, sharply defined, oval, scaly patches of dry skin, localized mainly on the trunk and extremities. Its etiology remains unknown. However, several reports suggest that it is a form of acquired ichthyosis vulgaris or a skin manifestation of systemic disease, such as malnutrition, chronic illness, hepatic disease, and malignancies. Although a variety of treatment modalities, including topical lactic acid, urea, tars, emollients, and corticosteroid, have been applied to it, their efficacies are not satisfactory. Herein, we report a case of PR in a healthy man who was successfully treated with oral and topical retinoids.
