PURPOSE: This study was conducted to develop and test a hypothetical stage model of workplace self-protective behaviors with respect to blood transmitted infections and musculoskeletal injuries for Korean nurses. METHODS: A nonexperimental, cross-sectional study designwas adopted. The study participants were 320 nurses at two Korean university hospitals. Perceived sensitivity, severity, barriers, benefits, self-efficacy, social support, and safety climate were assessed. RESULTS: Overall, fit indicators showed a good fit for the hypothetical model of self-protective behaviors against blood transmitted infections and musculoskeletal injuries. The significant factors of self-protective behaviors against blood transmitted infections were perceived barriers and social support. The significant factors of self-protective behaviors against musculoskeletal injuries were perceived benefits, barriers, and self-efficacy. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that the significant psychosocial constructs of stages of self-protective behavior are dependent on health problem type. Accordingly, we advise that characteristics of behavior and types of disease and health problem should be given priority when developing intervention programs for particular self-protective health behaviors.

Coexistence of cranial and spinal subdural hematomas is rare and only a few cases have been reported in the literature. Herein, we report a case of cranial and spinal subdural hematomas after previous head trauma. As the pathogenesis of simultaneous intracranial and spinal subdural hematoma yet remains unclear, we developed an alternative theory to those proposed in the literature for their coexistence, the migration of blood through the subdural space.

PURPOSE: The sunken chest deformity without breast asymmetry is not a rare condition encountered in augmentation mammaplasty. Therefore, failure to recognize the deformity and improper surgical plan will lead to a suboptimal result. The authors review the experience of breast augmentation in simple sunken chest patient based on retrospectively collected data. METHODS: From January, 2008 to January, 2009, patients with simple sunken chest underwent endoscopic submuscular augmentation mammaplasty through axilla, using silicone implants. Patient demographics were queried and outcomes were assessed. RESULTS: Eleven patients (22 breasts) were followed up for 8.2 months after surgery. Sunken chests were augmented with implant size of approximately 248.9 cc (range: 213~286 cc) and contralateral chest with 211.4 cc (range: 180~235 cc). Simultaneous camouflaging the chest wall depression with breast augmentation resulted in good aesthetic outcome. All of the patients were satisfied with the surgery. There were no complications among all patients. CONCLUSION: We have demonstrated proper surgical planning with precise implant selection to optimize results in patients with small breast and simple sunken chest. Even though asymmetry still remains after the operation, it is still considered as acceptable.

PURPOSE: This study was to examine the effects of foot reflexology on pain and depression of middle-aged women with Osteoarthritis. METHOD: The subjects were 41 osteoarthritis patients resided in the Jinju city from March to May, 2005. The foot reflexology was applied to the experimental group 3 times a week for 4 weeks, 30 minutes eachs. For the data analysis, chi-square-test was conducted to verify the homogeneity of general characteristics, and t-test was done to verify the homogeneity of pain and depression. To examine the relative efficacy of the intervention, t-test, paired t-test and repeated measures ANOVA were conducted. RESULTS: After foot reflexology, the subjects in experimental group showed significant improvement in pain (F=155.77, p=.000) and depression (F=20.00, p=.000). CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the foot reflexology is effective in relieving of pain and depression. Therefore, it is necessary to develop foot reflexology as an independent nursing intervention.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The p16, cyclin D1, their partners Cdk4/Cdk6, and pRb constitute a G1 regulatory pathway commomly targeted in tumorigenesis. Genetical, immunochemical, and functional analyses show abnormalities of this pathway in various tumors including head and neck squmaous cell carcinoma. To investigate the clinicopathologic meanings of p16 protein and the relationship between p16 and cyclin D1 in head and neck squmous cell carcinoma. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Formalin-fixed paraffin-embeded tumor materials that were obtained from 37 patient with head and neck squmaous cell carcinoma were analyzed by immunohistochemical staining method using antiserum that were directed against p16 and cyclin D1. RESULTS: 1) Deletion of p16 was found in 67.6% (25/37) of the patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. The deletion was not associated with the clinicopathologic parameters (eg. T and N stages, cell differentiation). 2) Deletion of p16 protein and overexpression of cyclin D1 were identified in 76% (28/37) of the patients with head and neck squmaous cell carcinoma. But deletion of p16 was not affected by the overexpression of cyclin D1 in head and neck squmaous cell carcinoma. CONCLUSION: Deletion of p16 and overexpression of cyclin D1 were identified in head and neck squmaous cell carcinoma. These may abrogate the G1 regulatory pathway. These data suggested that combination of these abnormalities may be important in head and neck turmorigenesis.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the variations of the skeletal and dentoalveolar dimensions in relation to vertical facial patterns. Lateral cephalogram of 200 cases (100 cases of male and 100 cases of female, average age of which was 23.2 years) were traced and some measurements of skeletal and dentoalveolar dimensions were measured. The ratio of UAFH/LAFH was employed to classify the samples into groups of excess and short lower anterior facial height. And the comparison between two groups were taken statistacally. The following results were obtained. 1. The dentoalveolar height, lower anterior facial height, lower gonial angle, and FMA in the excess-lower-anterior-facial-height group were significantly larger than those in short-lower-anterior-facial-height group. 2. The dentoalveolar height, ramus height, and Jarabak ratio in the male subjects were significantly larger than those in the female subjects. 3. The UAFH/LAFH ratio showed a significant correlation to upper, lower facial height, AUDH, PUDH, ALDH, PLDH, Lower gonial angle, FMA, and Bjok`s Sum.

PURPOSE: This study was done to identify the changes of cognitive function and depression following Chemotherapy in women with breast cancer. METHODS: Fifty patients participated in the study and completed the questionnaire at three-time points: pre-chemotherapy, post-chemotherapy, and six months after the completion of chemotherapy. The assessment tools were: everyday cognition, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and repeated measures analysis of variance. RESULTS: Immediately after chemotherapy, 52.0% of patients complained of subjective cognitive decline and reported greater difficulty in the cognitive domains of attention, memory, and visuospatial abilities. At six-month follow-up, 24.0% of patients exhibited mild cognitive decline. Repeated measures ANOVA showed a significant decline in cognitive function after chemotherapy. However, improvement was observed 6 months after the completion of chemotherapy. Depression showed similar patterns to cognitive function. Higher cognitive decline scores were significantly correlated with higher depression (r=.33, p=.020). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that chemotherapy is highly associated with cognitive decline and depression in women with breast cancer. Nursing intervention is needed to relieve depression as well as cognitive decline in patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Nasal osteotomy for aesthetic results is required in patients who have broad nasal bone. Since the procedure is difficult, many operators hesitate the surgery. From January 2007 to July 2009, we performed 77 cases of nasal osteotomy, consisting of paramedian oblique medial osteotomy or median oblique-medial osteotomy and percutaneous lateral osteotomy. Most of the patients had satisfying results, however three patients had asymmetric shape and inappropriate inward movement of nasal bone which required revision with percutaneous lateral osteotomy. Osteotomy procedure varies, depending on surgeon's preference and experience, however, each surgeon should be aware of good and weak points of those procedures and use the most suitable method. In order to achieve maximal satisfying results, preoperative analysis of patients and minimal invasive handling should be done. Based on these efforts, this method could broadly be used in the aesthetic field.

OBJECTIVE: 60-year old Korean population has particular life experiences such as Korean War. With this life experience, we aimed to examine the moderating role of social support on the relationship between adverse life events and depressive symptoms in later life. METHODS: The total respondents were 639 people who were 60-year old dwelling in Yangpyung, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. One to one interviews were conducted by experienced research assistants. RESULTS: Examining depression, 14.7% of total population showed 15 or higher geriatric depression scale-shortform-Korea score. 70% did report stressful life events as many as 13. Also, 31.6% of total participants were isolated or at high risk of isolation. Using hierarchical multiple regression models, the results showed that social support moderated the influence of the exposure to stressful life events on depression (R2=0.124, beta=-0.118, p<0.01). The moderating effect was greater in male (R2=0.118, beta=-1.36, p<0.01) than that of female (R2=0.113, beta=-0.115, p<0.01), which is apposite to our hypothesis. CONCLUSION: This finding suggests that social support play critical roles in the stress-outcome relationship among 60-years old population like it was suggested. Since most stressful events are inevitable, it is important to build sufficient social support networks.

PURPOSE: Percutaneous epidural neuroplasty (PEN) is a minimally invasive treatment. The efficacy of PEN has been relatively well investigated; however, the relationship between the clinical effectiveness of PEN and the severity of spinal canal stenosis by disc material has not yet been established. The purpose of this study was to compare clinical outcomes of PEN according to the dural sac cross-sectional area in single level disc disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 363 patients with back pain from single level disc disease with and without radiculopathy. Patients were categorized into groups according to spinal canal compromise by disc material: Category 1, less or more than 50%; and Category 2, three subgroups with lesser than a third, between a third and two thirds, and more than two thirds. Clinical outcomes were assessed according to the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score for back pain and leg pain and Odom's criteria at 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months after treatment. RESULTS: The demographic data showed no difference between groups according to spinal canal compromise by disc material except age (older age correlated with more spinal canal compromise). The dural sac cross-sectional area did not correlate with the VAS scores for back and leg pain after PEN in single level disc disease in Groups 1 and 2. Odom's criteria after PEN were also not different according to dural sac cross-sectional area by disc material. CONCLUSION: PEN is an effective procedure in treating single level lumbar disc herniation without affecting dural sac cross-sectional area.
