Clinics in Shoulder and Elbow 2016;19(2):101-104
Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty has been performed with promising results in rotator cuff tear arthropathy. However, the global complication of the reverse total shoulder arthroplasty is relatively higher than that of the conventional total shoulder arthroplasty. Neurologic complications after reverse total shoulder arthroplasty are rare but there are sometimes remaining sequelae. The cause of the neurologic complication is multifactorial, including arm traction, position and the design of the implant. Most cases of neurologic palsy following reverse total shoulder arthroplasty occur in the axillary nerve and the radial nerve. The authors report on a case of a 71-year-old man with isolated musculocutaneous nerve palsy after reveres total shoulder arthroplasty with related literature.

Journal of the Korean Society for Microbiology 1999;34(6):573-582
Cytokines are hormone-like proteins which mediate and regulate inflammatory and immune responses. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), Staphylococcus enterotoxin B (SEB), and Mycoplasma lysates on regulation of IL-6 and IL-8 production by human nasal fibroblasts. Primary cultured cells were incubated with LPS (1.0 ug/ml) from E.coli, SEB (1.0 ug/ml) from S.aureus, or Mycoplasma lysates (M.pneumoniae, Mp; M. fermentans, Mf; M. hominis, Mh, each 1.0 ug/ml). The culture supernatants were collected at 2, 6, and 24 hr and assessed for IL-6 and IL-8 production by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The production of IL-6 in the culture supematant was downregulated by LPS, SEB, or Mycoplasma lysates. But IL-6 was upregulated by mixed exposure with Mp+LPS (2 hr), Mp+LPS+SEB (24 hr), Mf+LPS (24 hr), Mf+LPS+SEB (2 hr), Mh+LPS (24 hr), Mh+SEB (24 hr), or Mh+LPS+ SEB (24 hr). The production of IL-8 in the culture supematant was similar to that of IL-6 by same stimulants. But IL-8 was upregulated by mixed exposure with Mf+LPS+SEB (2 hr), Mh+LPS (24 hr), Mh+ SEB (24 hr), or Mh+LPS+SEB (24 hr). These studies show that costimulation of LPS or SEB with Mycoplasma whole cell lysates upregulates the production of IL-6 and IL-8.

Heterotopic ossification(HO) is a frequent complication of total hip arthroplasty(THA), If it is sevre enough, it can convert a successful result of the operation into a poor one. Among several strategies that researches in recent years have tested, radiation therapy have been accepted to have efficacy for prevention of heterotopic ossification by many authors. While postoperative irradiation has been shown to lower the incidence of HO effectively in high risk patients following THA, patients in multiple dose protocols continue to develop some heterotopic ossifiction despite therapy and have some problems. Ninteen patients received single dose exposure to 600 rad delivered within 48 hours of THA with shielding of prosthesis region. The patients were considered high risk group for developing HO because of hypertropic osteoarthritis, post-traumatic osteoarthritis or the presence of previous formed ectopic bone. The average follow up period was 10.2 months(range 6 months

The Korean Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery 2000;33(8):681-683
A 34 year-old woman was hospitalized with anterior chest pain and indigestion. Chest radiograph and computed tomogram revealed a sewing needle in the cardiac cavity. She had no histories of surgical intervention, drug abuse, or acupuncture. We removed the needle from the right ventricle under cardiopulmonary bypass.

Clinics in Shoulder and Elbow 2014;17(4):152-158
BACKGROUND: To investigate the effectiveness of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) in treating irreparable massive rotator cuff tears (RCTs). METHODS: Twenty-nine patients who underwent RTSA for the treatment of irreparable massive RCTs and completed follow-up for at least 1 year were selected. Their mean age was 69.7 years (range, 59-80 years). The mean follow-up was 17.7 months (range, 12-42 months). The shoulder range of motion was measured preoperatively and at final follow-up. The functional result was evaluated using visual analog scale (VAS) for pain, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon (ASES) score, and Korean Shoulder Society (KSS) score. Additionally, the shoulders were categorized into two groups depending on prior history of surgery and the clinical outcomes were analyzed between two groups. RESULTS: Mean pain VAS improved, from 6.6+/-1.2 to 2.7+/-0.9 (p=0.001), and the mean functional VAS from 35.7+/-4.2 to 73.3+/-5.4 (p=0.006). The mean ASES score improved from 37.2+/-2.8 to 75.0+/-3.8 (p=0.012). The mean KSS improved from 36.5+/-7.2 to 75.6+/-5.4 (p=0.009), the mean forward elevation from 66.3+/-4.7 to 135.6+/-8.4 (p=0.0001), and the mean abduction from 45.2+/-4.2 to 119.0+/-6.5o (p=0.0001). Internal rotation differed significantly from the first sacral to the third lumbar vertebrae (p=0.036). External rotation did not change significantly (p=0.076). There was also no statistically significant difference between groups (no previous operation versus none). Four complications occurred: one superficial infection, one with anterior dislocation, one acromial fracture, and one clavicle fracture. CONCLUSIONS: RTSA provides reliable pain relief and recovery of shoulder function in patients with massive irreparable RCTs in short-term follow-up.

The Journal of Korean Academy of Prosthodontics 1999;37(2):167-184
The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the fit of denture bases processed by injection pressing technic using laser scanner of reverse engineering technic. The auther duplicated 20 maxillary edentulous models and 20 mandibular edentulous models, which were scanned on HYSCAN 45C 3D SCANNER(Hymarc Co., Canada). The scanned data was stored in the personal computer using SURFACER (Imageware Co., U.S.A.) software program. After 40 dentures were cured by PERform Inkovac system. SR-Ivocap system, Palajet system, and Sulfon system, they were stored in water at room temperature for 24 hours. The dentures were scanned on HYSCAN 45C 3D SCANNER(Hymarc Co. Canada). The scanned data were stored in the personal computer using SURFACER (Imageware Co., U.S.A) software program. By overlapping two images using the same program, the fit between two surfaces was scaled by positive and negative errors. The obtained results were as follows : 1. In the upper denture, most of the positive errors occurred on the lingual side of anterior alveolar ridge and the negative errors were on the flange of denture bases. 2. In the lower denture, most of the positive errors occurred on the inner side of lingual flange and the negative errors were on the border of anterior labial flange areas. 3. There were no statistical differences among the positive errors of the four types of inject-ion denture curing methods and also no statistical differences between negative errors except only in negative maximum errors. 4. In PRERform system and SR-Ivocap system, they have the tendency of inaccurate fit lower denture bases comparing to that of upper denture bases. 5. The negative error scales were greater than the positive error scales in all types of inject-ion denture curing methods.
