1.The Fate of Demineralized Human Osteosarcoma in Rat's Muscle Pouch
The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1986;21(6):987-991
Demineralized homogenous bone matrix is reported to have no antigenic activity and its osteoinductive prcoess is faster than that of undemineralized homogenous bone. The present authors studied on the osteoinduction of demineralized human osteosarcoma in rat's muscle pouch. The results showed that demineralized human osteosarcoma tissue can induce new bone though there were inflammatory signs and giant. cell reaction. The osteoinductive process seemed to be delayed compared to that of demineralized homogenous bone matrix. The authors believed that further immunological investigations are needed to clarify the cause of these tissue response.

Implant fixed prosthesis for the complete edentulous maxilla provides significant benefits in the aspects of functions and esthetics compared with the conventional denture. Implant supported fixed prosthesis are totally supported by implant, and thus stabilizes the prosthesis to the maximum degree as possible. Also, the improved retention and stability of fixed prosthesis enhance patients' psychological and psychosocial health. This clinical presentation describes a maxillary full arch implant-supported fixed prosthesis in complete maxillary edentulous patient who showed vertical and horizontal alveolar bone resorption in the anterior ridge. To rehabilitate the esthetics and proper lip support, the zirconia framework was fabricated and the pink porcelain was veneered to reproduce the natural gingival tissue. After 9 months of follow up, the restorations were maintained without complications and the patient was satisfied with the restoration both functionally and esthetically.

The progressive attrition of teeth is a normal process by aging. However, excessive tooth wear with decreased vertical dimension of occlusion and collapse of occlusal plane may cause pathologic pulpal condition, occlusal disharmony, functional disorders and esthetic problems. The change of vertical dimension is required in case that there is no sufficient clearance for restoration or in case that the occlusal relationship is modified. For gaining the vertical dimension, a careful diagnosis is essential prior to starting the restoration treatment. After evaluating adaptation of neuromuscular system of patient during provisional phase, the final restorations can be fabricated. In this case, a 78 year old male with severely worn down dentition was treated. To improve the esthetic appearance and to achieve the ideal occlusal relationship, the full mouth rehabilitation with minimal increase of vertical dimension is planned and diagnostic wax-up was performed at the increased vertical dimension. After evaluation of provisional restorations for 12 weeks, final restorations were fabricated and routine clinical assessments were made. After 1 year, the restorations with newly established occlusal scheme are well maintained without significant complications and esthetically and functionally satisfactory results were obtained.

Journal of the Korean Hip Society 2008;20(1):1-6
PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical result of Proximal Femoral Nail (PFN) fixation for intertrochanteric fracture of the femur in elderly patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between January 2004 and June 2006, 119 patients older than 65 years of age, with intertrochanteric fractures, were treated with PFN fixation. Ten patients who died within 4 weeks after operation were excluded from the analysis. Mean duration of follow-up was 13 months. There were 34 males and 75 females, and the mean age was 77.8 years. Operation time, amount of blood loss, transfusion requirement, time to ambulation, length of hospital stay, pre- and post-operative walking status, and post-operative complications were evaluated. Radiologic parameters such as amount of impaction, time to union, and neck-shaft angle were also evaluated. RESULTS: The mean operation time was 42 minutes, transfusion requirement averaged 340 ml, and amount of blood loss averaged 78 ml. The mean hospital stay was 20 days, and time to ambulation averaged 10.3 days. Eighty-five percent of patients returned to previous walking status. The average amount of fracture impaction was 3.8 mm, and mean time to radiologic bony union was 11.7 weeks. Neck-shaft angle was changed to 2.5 degrees varus displacement. Complications included intraoperative femur shaft fracture in 5 cases, protrusion of lag screw into the hip joint in 3 cases, backing out of lag screw in 2 cases, fixation failure in 2 cases, and proximal femur fracture in 1 case. Among these cases, 5 hips (2 cases of fixation failure and 3 cases of femoral head perforation by lag screw) were converted to total hip replacement. CONCLUSION: Because of reduction in operation time, low complication rate, and favorable outcome, PFN fixation is an acceptable alternative for fixation of intertrochanteric fractures in elderly patients.

Journal of Korean Academy of Fundamental Nursing 1997;4(1):147-162
This study was attempted to provide the basic data for nursing intervention to improve the psychosociological adaptation of patients receiving chemotherapy for breast cancer by examining relationship between anxiety and hopelessness that they are experiencing and family support, in order to help them successfully cope with various psychological problems. This study was carried out with 93 breast cancer patients who are receiving chemotherapy in the injection treatment room of K University Hospital located in the downtown of Taegu after having underwent mastectomy in the hospital between December 1995 and August 1996. This study used the systematized questionnaires which contain 7 questions about general characteristics, Spielberger's trait anxiety & state anxiety scale, the tool that WON(1987) modified the hopelessness scale which was developed by Beck et al. (1967) and the family support tool made by TAE(1985). By using the SPSS/PC program, this study obtained the real number and percent-age for the general characteristics of the subjects, and mean and standard variation for the degrees of trait anxiety, state anxiety, hopelessness and family support. The correlation between each variables was identified on the basis of the Pearson Correlation, and the degrees of trait anxiety, state anxiety, hopelessness and family support in the general characteristics of the subjects were analyzed by using the t-test, ANOVA, and Duncan test. The results of this study were summarized as follows : In the general characteristics of the subjects, most of each group were 51 years old or more and the middle class in income, had educational background under elementary school, no job, Buddhism in religion and spouse, and were receiving chemotherapy using MTX and 5 FU. It was shown that the degree of the subjects' trait anxiety is, on an average, 50. 29, state anxiety 49. 68, hopelessness 51. 46 and family support 34. 28. Both trait anxiety and hopelessness showed normal correlation ; the higher the degree of trait anxiety is, the higher the degree of hopelessness is, while trait anxiety and family support showed reverse correlation ; the higher the degree of trait anxiety, the lower the degree of family support that the subjects perceive is. State anxiety and hopelessness also showed normal correlation ; the higher the degree of anxiety is, the higher the degree of hopelessness is. Family support and hopelessness showed reverse correlation ; the higher the degree of family support is, the lower the degree of hopelessness that the subjects perceive is. And family support and state anxiety showed reverse correlation but there was a statistically significant difference. The degree of trait anxiety in the general characteristics of the subjects showed a significant difference by age, job and religion, the degree of state anxiety a significant difference by job and religion, the degree of hopelessness a significant difference by age, educational background and existence or not of spouse. In conclusion, the breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy perceive anxiety and hopelessness due to several causes such as diagnosis itself or side effects of chemotherapy, so that it is required not only to develop specific nursing interventions including family support to alleviate anxiety and hopelessness but also to apply such interventions to clinical practice.

Journal of Rheumatic Diseases 2013;20(5):314-318
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystem autoimmune disorder that predominantly affects women of reproductive age. Risk of SLE flare during pregnancy is dependent on disease activity of SLE and proteinuria at the time of conception, which affect pregnancy outcome. We report on three patients who developed renal flares during pregnancy after remission of lupus nephritis before pregnancy. Two patients were treated successfully, with pregnancy outcomes of live births however, another patient's pregnancy was terminated with induced abortion. For SLE patients, family planningis needed until disease activity of SLE has been stable for at least six months prior to the pregnancy. Nevertheless, flares of lupus could develop and influence maternal and fetal outcome. Therefore, renal flares during pregnancy should be recognized and treated immediately.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 2000;41(11):2485-2492
In experimental sutureless muscle surgery with tissue adhesives, current materials have inadequate adhesive strength in the early postoperative period. We performed a modified muscle surgery using a stitch combined with Tisseel (Immuno AG, Vienna, Austria)in order to evaluate the adhesive strengh as a replacement for conventional suture techniques in muscle surgery. Thirty eyes of 15 rabbits were used.We recessed superior and inferior rectus muscles by three different methods, Tisseel only, a stitch with Tisseel, and a stitch only, in each group of 5 rabbits.Conjunctival incisions were closed with the remaining Tisseel in 7 rabbits, and with vicryl in 8 rabbits. Tensile strength of the scleral reattachment site was measured and conjunctival closure was examined by slit-lamp biomicroscopy, at intervals of 1 hour, 12 hours, 1 day, 3 days and 5 days. The strengths of a stitch with Tisseel at each interval were 83.25 +/-1 4 .0 6 gm, 137.50 +/-22.88 gm, 169.75 +/-23.95 gm, 151.50 +/-41.99 gm, and 265.50 +/- 25.01 gm, respectively. The strengths of Tisseel alone were 61.50 +/-2 0 .2 1 gm, 101.50 +/-11.00 gm, 113.25 +/-28.69 gm, 120.50 +/-18.36 gm, and 222.75 +/- 57.67 gm.They were 52.25 +/-24.85 gm, 89.50 +/-16.05 gm, 130.75 +/-21.98 gm, 1 5 3 .7 5 +/-30.35 gm, and 261.50 +/-60.47 gm at each interval in rabbits with a stitch alone. These results showed that the tensile strengths of a stitch with Tisseel were stronger than those of the other two methods up to 1 day after surgery.Even at postoperative 12 hours, the strength was more than 130 gm which was strong enough for scleral attachment. All of the conjunctival closures with Tisseel were well maintained without any complication up to 5 days, the same as vicryl sutures. In conclusion, this study revealed that muscle attachment to the sclera by a stitch with Tisseel was simpler and safer than classical sutures with reduced risk of sclera perforation. Its strong tensile strength at early postoperative days suggests that the method might be considered as an alternative method to classical reattachment using suture material and also that conjunctiva could be closed with Tisseel remnant.

Journal of the Korean Hip Society 2009;21(1):47-52
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical and radiographic results of total hip arthroplasty with using the double tapered Mallory-Head system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The clinical and radiographic results of a consecutive series of 81 total hip replacements in 75 patients were reviewed at eight to twelve years (average: 9.8 years) postoperatively. The underlying diseases were avascular necrosis in 46 hips (57%), osteoarthritis in 12 hips (15%), RA in 9 hips (11%) and others. The clinical result was evaluated on the basis of the modified Harris hip score and the modified Merle d'Aubigne-Postel score. A radiographic analysis was also performed. RESULTS: The average modified Harris hip score was improved from preoperative 56 points to postoperative 92 points. The average modified Merle d'Aubigne-Postel score was 15 points at the latest follow up, and 55 hips (68%) were classified as having clinical grades of excellent or good results. One acetabular component was revised because of loosening, and one was revised because of recurrent dislocation. CONCLUSION: The clinical and radiological evaluations of the total hip replacements using the Mallory-Head system showed good results.

Journal of Dental Hygiene Science 2016;16(1):93-100
The purpose of this study was to compare the changes of retentive force in different stud attachment systems for implant retained overdenture. Two commercially available attachments with different retentive forces were investigated: Kerator (pink, blue, red) and O-ring (orange, red). Two implant fixtures were vertically embedded in base mountings. Five pairs of each attachment were evaluated. A universal testing machine was used to evaluate the retentive force of two attachments during wear simulation. Surface characteristics of each attachment system were evaluated with scanning electron microscopy. Five pairs of each attachment were evaluated. Kerator pink showed the highest initial retention. After 2,500 cycles of wear-simulation, Kerator pink noted the largest decrease in retention. According to results of surface analysis, Worn surfaces were obtained in matrices and patrices. Heavy wears were observed in matrices. After 2 year-wear simulation, most attachments exhibited retention loss. Attachments using different kind of material exhibited dissimilar surface alterations.
