PURPOSE: This study explored health-related quality of life (QoL) in Korean elderly individuals with hypertension, diabetes, and/or cardiovascular disease (CVD). METHODS: This study used a population-based cross-sectional design. Data were obtained from the Fourth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2008, which involved a nationally representative sample. Data on health-related QoL were collected using the EuroQoL-5 Dimension instrument and via health interviews. The sample consisted of 1,467 Korean individuals aged 60 years and older. A multiple linear regression model was used to analyze health-related QoL. RESULTS: After controlling for sociodemographic and lifestyle variables, individuals with one of the aforementioned chronic diseases had lower EuroQoL-5 Dimension scores, ranging from 0.186 among those with only hypertension to 0.469 among those with hypertension plus CVD, compared with those without a chronic disease (higher scores are indicative of more limitations). The impact of comorbid diseases was greater than that of any single disease except diabetes. CVD had a stronger negative impact on QoL than did any other single disease studied. Whereas the physical elements of QoL were influenced by all diseases, the psychological components were influenced only by hypertension plus diabetes and hypertension plus CVD. CONCLUSION: We found that both the number and the type of diseases affected QoL scores. Efforts to prevent or manage diabetes, CVD, and related risk factors should include psychological support.

Primary cutaneous aspergillosis is rare. In this report we describe primary skin infection by Aspergillus in 9 children with leukemia. The skin lesion was characterized clinically by erythematous macule and papule associated with pain and itching, followed by a rapid progression to ulcer and central black eschars with raised erythematous border at the site of venipuncture, insertion of intravenous cannula, or where arm boards had been taped to extremities. Diagnosis was confirmed by skin biopsy and wound culture. Positive revealed in 6 patients, including A. glaucus in 2 cases, A. flavus in 1 case. Treatment consisted of temporary withdrawl of anticancer chemotherapy, intravenous amphotericin B, oral flucytosine, itraconazole and/or rifampin. One patient recovered completely without antifungal medication with resolution of leukopenia. Six of eight treated patients recovered. One patient discharged against medical advice, while cutaneous aspergillosis was improving. One patient died with persistent skin lesion and neutropenia. We conclude that primary cutaneous aspergillosis is increasingly recognized in association with intravenous cannula, intravenous puncture or prolonged contact with arm boards in immunocompromised patients, and that this serious disease can be treated successfully with appropriate management.

Journal of Korean Academy of Community Health Nursing 2020;31(2):166-178
Purpose:
This study was conducted to examine the effects of the oral care program for improving swallowing function of the elderly using welfare centers on depression, self efficacy, subjective oral health status and swallowing related quality of life.
Methods:
The intervention in this study was systematically developed through the six stages of Intervention Mapping Protocol (IMP) and was based on Mead’s symbolic interaction theory and Bandura's self efficacy theory. A non equivalent control group pre and post-test design was conducted on a total of 37 elderly people (experimental group: 19, control group: 18) from D city. The oral care program was administered to the experimental group once a week for five weeks, totaling five times, and the exact program ran for 50 minutes. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 25.0 program.
Results:
Following the intervention, subjective oral health score, and swallowing related quality of life were significantly improved in the experimental group.
Conclusion
The oral care program presented in this study was found to be effective in increasing subjective oral health status, and swallowing related quality of life for the elderly using welfare centers.

XX male has a male phenotype with testes or gonads of testicular type and a female chromosomal constitution of 46, XX with no evidence of either ovarian tissue or female genital organs. Generally, they have normal male genitalia and all are infertile. We experienced a neonate with anophthalmia, hypospadia, small penis, and normal testes, whose chromosomal analysis demonstrated 46, XX. Polymerase chain reaction revealed the existence of a sex-determining region of Y (SRY). These findings suggest that the translation of an SRY on the X chromosome led to the development of a male phenotype. We report the case with a review of the related literature.

Korean Journal of Urology 2006;47(9):945-952
Purpose: Catheter associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) frequently occurs in the patients with an indwelling Foley catheter, and it can cause serious morbidity or mortality. However, there have been no reports about quorum sensing mechanisms in indwelling Foley catheter. It's our purpose to find out the quorum sensing mechanisms of isolated bacteria from biofilm in Foley catheters. Materials and Methods: Silicone Foley catheters were placed in 90 patients with neurogenic bladders. At the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 14th and 30th day after the catheters were placed, the catheters were removed and the biofilm formations were evaluated by routine culture and microscopy. The ygaG gene, which was reported to be an autoinducer synthase gene was carried out cloning in E. coli. The quantity of the mRNA expression of the ygaG gene was analyzed according to the time by competitive reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Results: 289 different types of bacteria were isolated by cultivation. The most common species were Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Serratia, Proteus and Escherichia species. The autoinducer synthase gene, such as the ygaG gene for Escherichia coli, was detected by RT-PCR. On competitive RT-PCR of the ygaG gene, the mRNA expression was 3.77x10(9)copies/microliter at the 3rd day, 5.94x10(7)copies/microliter at the 5th day, 8.07x10(7)copies/microliter at the 7th day, 2.51x10(6)copies/microliter at the 14th day and 6.81x10(8)copies/microliter at the 30th day. Therefore, the expression of the autoinducer synthase gene was observed at the early insertion period and it was then maintained. Conclusions: This is the first study to document the autoinducer synthase gene expression associated quorum sensing mechanism in CAUTI. The quorum sensing mechanism may be a new target for the management of CAUTI.

Korean Journal of Medical Mycology 2012;17(4):230-235
Kerion celsi is a severe inflammatory type of tinea capitis that presents as an inflammatory, boggy mass with broken hairs and hair loss. It is usually occurred in children between the age of 4 and 14 years that caused by zoophilic or geophilic pathogens such as Microsporum(M.) canis, Trichophyton(T.) mentagrophytes, T. verrucosum, M. gypseum, T. verrucosum was chiefly found from cattle which infect the human through direct contact. We report a case of kerion celsi caused by T. verrucosum probably transmitted from cattle in a 3-year-old boy. The patient had a solitary, tender, 6.0 x 5.5 cm sized, erythematous boggy plaque and pustules with hair loss on the right side of occipital scalp for 2 weeks. Chains of chlamydoconidia were observed in KOH mount and slide culture by light microscopy. The nucleotide sequence of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region for clinical isolate was identical to that of T. verrucosum strain IFM 57570. He was treated with 125 mg of terbinafine daily for 12 weeks and short term therapy of low dose of prednisolone. Skin lesion was cured without recurrence.
