PURPOSE: This study was performed to examine the frequency of irritable bowel syndrome(IBS), perceived stress, and mental health among community-dwelling women. METHODS: This study conducted a survey to collect data on 869 women in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The measurements included the Rome III criteria(to diagnose IBS), the Global Assessment Recent Stress(GARS scale to evaluate perceived stress), and symptom check list 90R(SCL-90R to evaluate psychological distress). Data were analyzed using SPSS 15.0 program by frequency, chi-square -tests, t-test, and analysis of variance(ANOVA). RESULTS: The frequency of IBS in women was 15.1%. Eighty-six women(65.6%) had mixed constipation and diarrhea subtype of IBS. Compared to the women without IBS, those with IBS reported significantly higher scores on GARS, all subscales of GARS, SCL-90R, all subscales of SCL-90R, and the global severity index(GSI). No significant differences were observed among stress, mental health, and the IBS subtypes. CONCLUSION: Nursing interventions targeting women with IBS should be developed in order to reduce the associated stress and psychological distress.

STATEMENT of THE PROBLEM: The record base in fabricating procedures of the complete denture, as a temporary form for reproducing denture base, is used to record upper and lower jaw relation and to align artificial teeth and try-in it in the mouth. The accuracy of jaw relation record is affected by the accuracy, stiffness and stability of the record base. So, the accuracy of record base is the most important requirements of jaw relation records. PURPOSE of STUDY: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the gap that occurred over the palatal area of a maxillary record base fabricated with autopolymerizing resin and light-curingresin. METHODS AND MATERIAL: The maxillary record bases were fabricated out of autopolymerizing resin that is used the most frequently in clinics and light-curing resin that attracts special attentionfor its several merits. The light-curing resin was made by two kinds of polymerization methods, which are one step curing method and multiple step curing method. All record bases were cut in certain positions of the master cast 1 hour and 1 day later after fabrication and the accuracy of the master cast was measured and analyzed with a microscope. RESULTS: A pattern of gap formation between the record base and the maxillary cast was observed in all specimens. According to kinds of resins, autopolymerizing resin was significantly more accurate than light-curing resin. There was no statistical difference according to time lapse, and in all three groups, the maximum discrepancy occurred at the posterior border in the midpalatal region. CONCLUSLON: The autopolymerizing resin is better than light-curing resin, and multiple step curing method is more accurate than one step curing method when using light-curing resin.

Purpose: One of the many challenges health care leaders face is understanding what nurse turnover is and what can be done about it. This study was conducted to understand the effect of reality shock, nursing professionalism and social support of new graduate nurses on their intention of retention. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional descriptive survey design. Data were collected from 151 new graduate nurses working in general hospitals in South Korea. Data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS 25.0 program. Results: New graduate nurses’ intention of retention had relationship with Reality shock, nursing professionalism, social support, work experience, working in desired unit and monthly income. Factors associated with intention of retention were reality shock (β=-.26, p<.001), nursing professionalism (β =.25, p=.001), colleague’s support (β=.23, p<.001), work experience (β=-.21, p=.003) and monthly income (β=.16, p=.021). These factors explained 40.3% of the intention of retention. Conclusion In order to improve new graduate nurses’ intention of retention, it is necessary to improve nursing professionalism and colleague’s support while reducing reality shock. In addition, customized education considering the career of new graduate nurses will be necessary to improve their level of intention of retention.

Pituitary adenoma accounts for 10% to 20% of intracranial tumors. Surgical approach to pituitary adenoma had been performed via craniotomy until the early 20th century, but transsphenoidal approach has been accepted as a primary procedure since 1910. However, there are frequent complications in the nose including nasal mucosal laceration, nasal septal perforation, and external nose deformities. Furthermore, cerebrospinal fluid leakage, visual field loss or blindness rarely occur. When blindness occurs by postoperative hematoma compression, revision operation is usually required for bleeding control and hematoma removal under general anesthesia. However, optic nerve decompression with postoperative hematoma removal via transsphenoidal approach can be adequately performed by endoscopic technique under local anesthesia, because there is no sensory nerve innervation in the pia mater and arachnoid membrane. We report a case of successful hematoma removal with bleeding control by endoscopic technique under local anesthesia in a patient who became blind due to postoperative hematoma after transphenoid approach for pituitary adenoma removal.

PURPOSE: This study was to identify behaviors preventing the recurrence of breast cancer and the level of quality of life. METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted using a structured questionnaire from November 1, 2006 to December 25, 2006 . One hundred and twenty two women breast cancer survivors were recruited by convenience sampling. RESULTS: The most frequent behavior for preventing recurrence of the breast cancer was dietary treatment (90.9%) and exercise (86.8%) was the second behavior. In addition, most of them perceived these behaviors as 'very effective' (82.8%). The degree of the quality of life of a breast cancer survivor was 5.34 point indicating a 'medium level'. CONCLUSION: Breast cancer survivors pursued various behaviors for preventing recurrence of breast cancer. Therefore, the nursing interventions should be focused on a systematic educational approach considering healthy behaviors to prevent breast cancer recurrence for breast cancer survivors.

Keratomileusis-in-situ was performed on 18 eyes(15 patients) to correct high myopia. Average preoperative spherical equivalent was -19.26 diopter(D) with a range of -13.25 to -30.50D. The mean postoperative myopia was -4.80D(-0.00 to -9.00D), checked at 6 months postoperatively. Preoperative corneal refractive power was +43.63D, while it decreased to +35.41D at 6 months postoperatively Of all the cases, there was no significant complication except the one who had irregular astigmatism caused by the epithelial ingrowth in the interface. Uncorrected vision of all the patients improved markedly, compared to those preoperatively. In conclusion, keratomileusis-in-situ is a feasible technique for correcting high amounts of myopia, though the calculation program might be improved to obtain adequate prediction.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the degree of intensive and critical care nursing competence in senior nursing students. METHODS: The research method for this study comprised a descriptive survey study with a convenience sample of 113 senior nursing students from one university. The instrument entitled ICCN-CS-1, which measures intensive and critical care nursing competence, was translated by the authors following WHO guidelines for translation process. The data were collected using ICCN-CS-1. RESULTS: The mean score of intensive and critical care nursing was above the intermediate level. The competence indices of knowledge, skill and attitude/value were also above the intermediate level, which suggests that their competence is good. For two intensive and critical care nursing domains, the nursing students' mean score of clinical competence is higher than that of professional competence. The competence of intensive and critical care is also influenced by nursing students' satisfaction in their major and clinical practice as well as their confidence in clinical practice. CONCLUSION: The senior nursing students' competence of intensive and critical care nursing is above the intermediate level. A consideration of the influencing factors of satisfaction of nursing major/ICU practice and confidence of ICU practice is needed in intensive and critical care nursing education.

Thirty consecutive patient seen in a pediatric out patient and emergency department, in whom the diagnosis of intussusception was considered, had an ultrasound examination of the abdomen before the barium enema. The peak age was 5~12 month (range 4~34 month). Intussusception was detected by ultrasonography in all 25 cases proved by barium enema (sensitivity 100%). Normal findings on ultrasonography correlated with a negative barium enema results in 5 of 5 cases (negative predictive value=100%). No intussusception was missed by ultrasonography. To determine which patient would most benefit from ultrasonography, we divided patients into either a high risk group (100% intussusception) or a low risk group (37.5% intussusception) on the basis of clinical symptoms. We conclude that ultrasonography can be used as a rapid sensitive screening procedure in the diagnosis or exclusion of childhood intussusception. Probability of surgical reduction was associated with size of of total thickness and external rim thickness.

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to investigate the factors influencing the competence in intensive and critical care nursing of senior nursing students. METHODS: A descriptive survey was used to examine the factors that influence competence in intensive and critical care nursing. The data were collected using self-administered questionnaires; 237 senior nursing students were asked about general characteristics, critical thinking, communication competence, self-esteem, self-resilience, and self-leadership. RESULTS: Multiple regression analysis indicated that self-leadership, self-esteem, and confidence in intensive care unit practice predicted the competence in intensive and critical care nursing (37.8% of explanatory power). Critical thinking, communication competence, and self-resilience were not shown to be significant predictors of, but were positively correlated with, the competence in intensive and critical care nursing. CONCLUSION: Based on the results, it is suggested that self-leadership, self-esteem, and confidence in intensive care unit practice should be considered in nursing education in order to improve nursing students' level of competence in intensive and critical care nursing.
