Authors examined 40,000 minifilms(boys and girls each 10,000 in junior and senior high schools) which were taken for survey of pulmonary tuberculosis for junior and senior high school students and checked the prevalence of scoliosis. It was considered lateral curvature of spine more than 10 degrees as nonpostural scoliosis, which were analyzed prevalence rate, degree of curvature, distribution of size of curvature, pattern of curve and direction of curvature. Following results were obtained. 1. The overall prevalence rate was 1.56; male 1.38. and female 1.70%(Junior high school 1.06%, Senior high school 2.05%). 2. Scoliosis secondary due to bony abnormality was found in 5 cases. 3. The most common pattern of curvature was the thoracic curve. 4. In sihgle curve, right to left ratio was 1.7, especially senior high school girls had more right curve and junior high school boys had more left curve. 5. The prevalence of senior high school students was greater than that of junior high school students and the degree of curvature was also severe in senior high school students than in junior high school students.

Malignancy may cause variable musculoskeletal symptoms which resemble connective tissue disorder. This symptoms as a fine sign of hidden neoplasm can precede the diagnosis of underlying malignancy. But only one case of stomach cancer associated with cancer arthritis was reported in the world. This fact is very interesting in Asia which has high prevalence of stomach cancer. We experienced one case of gastric adenocarcinoma with oligoarthritis involving both knee and right elbow. A 48-year-old man was diagnosed stomach cancer by gastric endoscope and biopsy. After then, he complained pain, tenderness, heating sensation, swelling of both knee and right elbow with high fever. Both knee MRI showed abundant synovial effusion and soft tissue edema. Full dose of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug was not effective to control fever and arthritis. But fever and arthritis were gone after resection of tumor.

PURPOSE: Recently, an increase in the number of patients sensitized to rice allergen with or without clinical symptoms has been reported. This study was designed to determine the major allergens in rice and their clinical significance. METHODS: Twenty-four children (15 boys and 9 girls; mean age, 16.3 months) with allergic disease, who were sensitized to rice antigen (by UniCAP) in the Pediatric Allergy Respiratory Center at Soonchunhyang University Hospital, were enrolled in this study. The allergenicity of various types of rice (raw, cooked, and heat-treated, simulated gastric fluid [SGF], and simulated intestinal fluid [SIF]) was investigated using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and immunoglobulin E (IgE) immunoblots. The patients' medical records, including laboratory data and allergy symptoms after ingestion of rice were reviewed. RESULTS: Patients were sensitized to an average of 13.5 food antigens and their mean total IgE was 6,888.7 kU/L. In SDS-PAGE, more than 16 protein bands were observed in the raw rice, whereas only 14-16 kDa and 31-35 kDa protein bands were observed in cooked rice. The common SDS-PAGE protein bands observed in SGF-, SIF-, and heat-treated rice were 9, 14, and 31 kDa. In a heated-rice IgE immunoblot, protein bands of 9, 14, and 31-33 kDa were found in 27.8%, 38.9%, and 38.9% of all sera, respectively, and in 50%, 50%, and 75%, of ser a from the 4 symptomatic patients, respectively. CONCLUSION: The 9-, 14-, and 31-kDa protein bands appeared to be the major allergens responsible for rice allergy symptoms.

Genomics & Informatics (NLM title abbreviation: Genomics Inform) is the official journal of the Korea Genome Organization. Text corpus for this journal annotated with various levels of linguistic information would be a valuable resource as the process of information extraction requires syntactic, semantic, and higher levels of natural language processing. In this study, we publish our new corpus called GNI Corpus version 1.0, extracted and annotated from full texts of Genomics & Informatics, with NLTK (Natural Language ToolKit)-based text mining script. The preliminary version of the corpus could be used as a training and testing set of a system that serves a variety of functions for future biomedical text mining.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: As one of biological modifiers of immune reaction, thymomodulin is known to be peptide derivatives of thyrnic acid. Lysate, and thymomodulin can stimulate antibody formations by increasmg the functions of B and T tymphocytes. Furthermore, GM-CSF and TNF can be released by thymomodulin resulting in relief from bone marrow suppression. And these actions of thymomodulin affer a new therapeutic modality in chronic diseases ot the liver as well as chronic hronchitis. Although interferons are frequently under trials for chronic viral hepatitis B. anothersome of side etTec ts and cost effectiveness is often refractory to be used. Herein, this study was intended to estimate the effectiveness and side effects of per oral thymomodulin. METHODS: Forty one patients with chronic viral hepatitis showing positivity of HBsAg over 6 months were treated with per oral thymomodulin (15mlAmg/ml, h vice daily, over 6 months), Clinical data of preand post-trial states were prospectively investigated. RESULTS: As a result, negative conversion of HBV DNA izvealed 20.6% out ol 34 patients showed HBsAg positivity. HBeAg was isappeared in 10.4 % among the 29 cases. Only two cases were shown the clearance of HBsAg. However. These data are statistically insignificant in comparison to the control group (p>0.05, chi-square test). The desirable effects were noticed as disappearance of acne in 5 cases, and amelioration of menstrual abnormalities in 3 cases. Undesirable side effects were only mild nausea in 3 cases, and indigestion in 2 cases. CONCLUSIONS: On thc basis of these data, it is suggested that oral thymomodulin is an easy and safe therapeutic approach in chronic viral hepatitis B but remains to be heralded by long-term clinical trials.

PURPOSE: Urinary angiotensinogen (AGT) has been reported as an important marker reflecting the activity of intrarenal renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in chronic glomerulonephritis patients. We investigated urinary AGT excretion and intrarenal AGT expression in patients with minimal change disease (MCD). METHODS: In 20 patients with biopsy-proven MCD, urinary and plasma AGT was measured using a sandwich ELISA and intrarenal AGT expression was measured with immunohistochemistry. Urine samples from normal healthy volunteers and patients with biopsy-proven thin basement membrane disease (TBM) were used as control groups. RESULTS: MCD patients showed a wide range of natural logarithm of the urinary AGT/creatinine [ln (urinary AGT/Cr)] and the ln (urinary AGT/Cr) was higher in MCD patients compared with normal controls and TBM controls (normal control vs. TBM vs. MCD, 1.2+/-0.25 vs. 0.9+/-0.34 vs. 3.2+/-0.40). Intrarenal AGT expression was diverse in MCD patients (intrarenal AGT, arbitrary unit, 27.39-78.52 in TBM, 0.00-145.80 in MCD). Ln (urinary AGT/Cr) did not show a direct correlation with intrarenal AGT expression, plasma AGT, or urinary protein/creatinine ratio. CONCLUSION: Urinary AGT excretion and intrarenal AGT expression are enhanced in some MCD patients, suggesting that intrarenal RAS is activated in these patients.

Congenital hepatic fibrosis (CHF) is an autosomal recessive disease, presenting principally in children or young adults with portal hypertension, and infrequently associated with cholangitis. It is associated with renal malformation and Caroli's disease. The diagnosis of CHF is usually confirmed by its typical histological features. Cholangitis is a severe and frequently fatal complication. We report a 22-year-old man with congenital hepatic fibrosis who showed the cholangitis without radiological features of cystic dilatation or stone of intrahepatic ducts.

We report a rare case of the idiopathic membranous glomerulonephritis (IMGN) in association with the thin glomerular basement membrane nephropathy (TGBMN) in a 63-year-old female with hematuria. This is the first case reported in Korea. In renal biopsy of this case, direct immunofluorescence demonstrated anti-IgG Ab along the glomerular capillary wall with granular pattern. The basement membrane was thin, about 170-220 nm and small epimembranous electron dense deposits were observed by electron microscopy. As this case, the combination of TGBMN and IMGN is very uncommon because the IMGN is characterized morphologically by diffuse global thickening of the glomerular capillary wall, while the TGBMN is defined as an extreme thinning of the glomerular basement membrane, less than 200 nm. Our case showed no renal function deterioration and benign prognosis as other reports showed.

With the recent advent of suction catheters, the use of manual aspiration thrombectomy (MAT) for patients with acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion has increased. Although contrast leakage and subarachnoid hemorrhage have been reported during MAT procedures, pseudoaneurysm formation due to vessel injury by suction catheters has not been. We discuss the case of a 60-year-old woman who presented to our emergency room with dysarthria and left-sided weakness. She underwent suction thrombectomy 5 times for acute middle cerebral artery occlusion and significant contrast leakage occurred during the procedure. On follow-up angiogram on post-operative day 15, we noticed a pseudoaneurysm, which was treated with detachable coil embolization. Surgeons who perform suction thrombectomy should keep in mind the possibility of vessel injury that results in the formation of a pseudoaneurysm, especially at the branching site or tortuous segments.

PURPOSE: Patterns of syncope evaluation vary widely among physicians and hospitals. The aim of this study was to assess current diagnostic patterns and medical costs in the evaluation of patients presenting with syncope at the emergency department (ED) or the outpatient department (OPD) of a referral hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 171 consecutive patients with syncope, who visited the ED or OPD between January 2009 and July 2009. RESULTS: The ED group had fewer episodes of syncope [2 (1-2) vs. 2 (1-5), p=0.014] and fewer prodromal symptoms (81.5% vs. 93.3%, p=0.018) than the OPD group. Diagnostic tests were more frequently performed in the ED group than in the OPD group (6.2+/-1.7 vs. 5.3+/-2.0; p=0.012). In addition, tests with low diagnostic yields were more frequently used in the ED group than in the OPD group. The total cost of syncope evaluation per patient was higher in the ED group than in the OPD group [823000 (440000-1408000) won vs. 420000 (186000-766000) won, p<0.001]. CONCLUSION: There were some differences in the clinical characteristics of patients and diagnostic patterns in the evaluation of syncope between the ED and the OPD groups. Therefore, a selective diagnostic approach according to the presentation site is needed to improve diagnostic yields and to reduce the time and costs of evaluation of syncope.
