1.Study of cutaneous hydration effect according to the vehicles of moisturizers.

We investigated on how the nature of vehicles influenced on the efficacy of mo isturizer s, cutaneous hydrat,ion, physical property and roughness. Hydration was measured with corneometer, physical property with fermometer, and mughness with image analyser. Used vehicles were as follows : hydrous gel, vater in oil(W/0) emulsion, oil in water(0/W) emulsion. I.Jsed moisturizers were as follows . glycerine, polypeptide and sodium lactat,e, hyaluronic acid-triethanolamine, sodium lactate, pvopylene glycol, The results are summarized as follows : 1. The increment of the hydration effect according to vehicles was in this order. C/ W emulsion, W/0 emulsion, hydrous gel(After 2 hours). 2. The increment of extensibility as physical property was correlated to the in crcment, of hydration effcet(r=0.924). 3. It was shown that, the roughness was decreased after treatment of all mo isturizers except propylene glycol but, there was not significant st.atistically and alsa was no meaningful difference among the vehicles. 4. Among t,he moisturizers, glycerine was superior to other moisturizers on the hydration effect and extensihility. We conclude that 0/W emulsion was suitable vehicle on cutaneous hydration effect and hydration effect is proportion to the increment of flexibility.

3.Surgical-orthodontic treatment of impacted teeth displaced by unicystic ameloblastoma.

The purpose of this case report is to provide the information of the treatment of the impacted-displaced teeth associated with the disease in the jaw. A 10-year-old boy presented with a large radiolucent lesion accompanying the displacement of the second premolar and first molar in the left mandibular body area. The lesion was diagnosed as unicystic ameloblastoma. As a surgical procedure for the present case, marsupialization was executed. For the eruption of displaced impacted teeth, no orthodontic intervention was done for second premolar while a helical spring was used for the forced eruption of first molar. Good occlusion was established by simple orthodontic intervention.

4.Molecular Cloning and Nucleotide Sequence of the Gene Encoding Fusion(F) Protein of the Thermostable Newcastle Disease Virus Isolated from a Diseased Pheasant.

The gene encoding F protein of CBP-1 strain, a heat-stable Newcastle disease virus (NDV) isolated from the diseased pheasants in Korea, was characterized by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), nucleotide and amino acid sequences. Virus RNA was prepared from the chorioallatoic fluid infected with NDV CBP-1 virus and cDNA was amplified by RT-PCR, cloned and sequenced to analyze. The PCR was sensitive as to detect the virus titer above 25 hemagglutination unit. 1.7kb (1,707bp) size of the cDNA was amplified and cloned into BamHI site of pVL1393 Baculo transfer vector. The nucleotide sequences for F protein were determined by dye terminator cyclic sequencing using four pairs of primers, and 553 amino acid sequences were predicted. In comparison of the nucleotide sequence of F gene of CBP-1 with those of other NDV strains, the homology revealed 88.8%, 98.5% and 98.7% with Kyojungwon (KJW), Texas GB and Beaudette C strains, respectively. As the deduced 553 amino acid sequences of F protein of CBP-1 were compared with those of other NDV strains, the homology appeared 89.9%, 98.7% and 98.9% with KJW, Texas GB and Beaudette C strains, respectively. The putative protease cleavage site (112-116) was R-R-Q-K-R, indicating that CBP-1 strain is velogenic type. The amino acid sequences include 6 sites of N-asparagine-linked glycosylation and 13 cysteine residues. These data indicate that the genotype of CBP-1 strain is more closely associated with the strains of Texas GB and Beaudette C than KJW strain.

5.Utility of Multiplanar Reformation Images of Helical CT in the Evaluation of Pancreatic Diseases.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to assess the clinical utility of multiplanar reformation images of helical CT in the evaluation of pancreatic diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Helical CT scans of the pancreas were obtained in 30 patients with pancreatic diseases. Helical CT was performed with 5mm collimation at 5mm/sec table speed during rapid injection of intravenous contrast agent using power injector. After scanning, helical volume data were reconstructed at 2mm interval and then multiplanar reformation of the pancreas and adjacent structures was done. In both prospective reconstructed axial images and multiplanar reformation images, detection of pancreatic lesion, extent of lesion, and vascular and bile ductal changes were analyzed with a grading system of 1,2, 3. RESULTS: The mean grade of detection of pancreatic lesions was 2.37 in the prospective axial image and 2.83 in multiplanar reformation image, extent of diseases was 2.40 in prospective axial image and 2.97 in multiplanar reformation image, and vascular and bile ductal changes was 2.00 in the prospective axial image and 2.97 in multiplanar reformation image. All the differences were statistically significant (P<0.0001). CONCLUSION: Multiplanar reformation images of helical CT are useful in the evaluation of pancreatic diseases and especially in the demonstratibn of complex anatomic relationships between the pancreas and surrounding structures.

9.Medial Medullary Syndrome: Clinical Study of 9 Cases.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Medial medullary syndrome (MMS) is characterized clinically by a triad of ipsilateral hypoglossal nerve palsy, contralateral or ipsilateral hemiparesis sparing the face, and sensory disturbance of position and/or vibration. However, this syndrome is quite rare, and its clinical and radiological findings have not yet been clearly characterized. METHODS: We reviewed 9 patients with AMS who were diagnosed based on their clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. RESULTS: There were 8 men and I woman with average age of 60 (41 to 75) years. The risk factors included hypertension in 8, DM in 6, cigarette smoking in 4, hypercholesterolemia in 4, gout in I and atrial fibrillation with LV dysfunction in 1. Their, clinical findings included contralateral hemiparesis in 9 and contralateral hermhypesthesia in & Only one patient presented with ipsilateral lingual paresis. The motor weakness was mild in 5 and moderate in 4. MRI results showed the lesions were located in the upper medulla in 7 and lower medulla in 2. Alteration of vertebral artery flow signal void in MRI was observed in 6 patients. Three patients had additional infarcts in the lateral medullary area. Prognosis of the motor weakness was good in 5 and stationary in 4. CONCLUSION: Our patients generally presented with unilateral sensorimotor stroke. Ipsilateral h6miparesis and tongue weakness, unique signs of @, were found only rarely, and the absence of these findings often made it difficult to localize the lesion by clinical judgement only.

10.Therapeutic Effect of Cyclosporine a on Severe Henoch-Scholein Purpura Nephritis.

The fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytologic findings in 16 cases of histologically confirmed thymoma are reported. The aspirates were obtained under fluoroscopic guidance. The cytologic diagnoses were inadequate sample in one case, thymoma in 12 (75%), small cell carcinoma or thymoma in 1, benign mesenchymal tumor in 1, and germ cell tumor in one. The cytologic features were detailed according to the constituent epithelial cell type, and to the ratio of epithelial cells and lymphocytes. Fifteen cases were classified into 4 small epithelial cell type, 6 intermediate epithelial cell type, 1 large epithelial cell type, 1 large pleomorphic epithelial cell type, and 3 spindle-shaped epithelial cell type. Cytologic differential diagnosis was discussed, and the important criteria for the cytologic diagnosis of thymoma were reviewed. This review leads us to think that nonoperative cytologic approaches in the diagnosis of the thymoma are possible, and that correct cytologic diagnosis of thymoma with FNAs can easily be made, if adequate samples are obtained. However, the invasiveness and histologic type could not be predicted by cytological features only. Knowing various cytologic and histologic features of thymoma will be helpful for the diagnosis of thymoma and the differential diagnosis of mediastinal tumors.
