Several studies have reported on injury of the dentato-rubro-thalamic tract (DRTT) in patients with various brain pathologies. However, no study on recovery of an injured DRTT has been reported so far. We report on a patient who showed recovery of an injured DRTT during a period of approximately 4 years following traumatic brain injury (TBI), which was demonstrated by follow-up diffusion tensor tractography (DTT). A 24-year-old male patient suffered a car accident. The patient lost consciousness for approximately 4 months. At the beginning of rehabilitation, the patient showed mild quadriparesis, severe resting and intentional tremor on four extremities and severe truncal ataxia. He was not able to sit independently. With rehabilitation, he showed continuous improvement, and was able to walk independently at 45 months after onset of injury. On 5-month DTT, DRTTs in both hemispheres were not reconstructed. In contrast, on 13-month DTT, the lower portion of the left DRTT was reconstructed, although the right DRTT was still not reconstructed. On 32-month DTT, the whole left DRTT was reconstructed, however, only the lower portion of the right DRTT was reconstructed. Finally, both DRTTs were reconstructed on 45-month DTT.Conclusions: Recovery of an injured DRTT was demonstrated in a patient with TBI, using DTT. We believe that evaluation of the DRTT using DTT may be helpful to monitor the progress of rehabilitation in patients with movement symptoms following TBI.

Purpose: We investigated the satisfaction of physical therapy course according to teaching ways after COVID-19. Methods: 336 students in major of physical therapy were recruited in this study. Based on the classification of subjects in the national examination, the questionnaire was divided into 6 subjects in the basic field of physical therapy, 2 subjects in the field of physical therapy diagnostic evaluation, 8 subjects in the field of physical therapy intervention, and 3 subjects in other fields. The Likert scale was used. Results: In the basic field of physical therapy, all subjects were shown the high score of the satisfactory in face-to-face classes except for the public health and medical law compared to the non-face-to-face classes and mixed classes. Regarding the field of physical therapy diagnostic evaluation, the principle of diagnostic evaluation was shown the high score of the satisfactory in face-to-face classes compared to the non-face-to-face classes and mixed classes. In the field of physical therapy intervention, all subjects were shown the high score of the satisfactory in face-to-face classes compared to the non-face-to-face classes and mixed classes. Conclusion We found that the face-to-face classes in most of subjects was shown the high score of satisfactory. We believed that our results can be used as basic data for physical therapy major learning methods.

OBJECTIVE: Facial nerve palsy is a common complication of treatment for vestibular schwannoma (VS), so preserving facial nerve function is important. The preoperative visualization of the course of facial nerve in relation to VS could help prevent injury to the nerve during the surgery. In this study, we evaluate the accuracy of diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) for preoperative identification of facial nerve. METHODS: We prospectively collected data from 11 patients with VS, who underwent preoperative DTT for facial nerve. Imaging results were correlated with intraoperative findings. Postoperative DTT was performed at postoperative 3 month. Facial nerve function was clinically evaluated according to the House-Brackmann (HB) facial nerve grading system. RESULTS: Facial nerve courses on preoperative tractography were entirely correlated with intraoperative findings in all patients. Facial nerve was located on the anterior of the tumor surface in 5 cases, on anteroinferior in 3 cases, on anterosuperior in 2 cases, and on posteroinferior in 1 case. In postoperative facial nerve tractography, preservation of facial nerve was confirmed in all patients. No patient had severe facial paralysis at postoperative one year. CONCLUSION: This study shows that DTT for preoperative identification of facial nerve in VS surgery could be a very accurate and useful radiological method and could help to improve facial nerve preservation.

PURPOSE: Interferon gamma release assays (QuantiFERON-TB Gold in Tube test [QFT-GIT]); Cellestis Limited, Victoria, Australia) have been studied for diagnosing pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) or latent TB but there have been no reports on the usefulness of this assay in diagnosing tuberculous anal fistula in actual clinical practices. In this study, we evaluated its diagnostic usefulness in patients with suspected tuberculous anal fistula. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 119 patients with suspected tuberculous anorectal fistula from May 2007 to May 2009. Diagnosis of tuberculous fistula was concluded by identification of acid-fast bacilli, typical caseating granuloma and successful clinical response to anti-TB chemotherapy. All patients underwent the QFT-GIT and all patients diagnosed with tuberculous anal fistula were analyzed. RESULTS: Of the 119 patients with suspected TB fistula, 51 (43%) patients were classified as having TB fistula, including 31 with confirmed tuberculosis and 20 with probable tuberculosis, and other 68 (57%) were classified as not having tuberculosis. Among the 51 patients with TB fistula, Chronic caseating granuloma, acid-fast bacilli stain, and successful clinical response to anti-TB treatment were positive in 27 (52.9%), 4 (7.8%), and 20 (39.2%), respectively. Of the 51 with TB fistula, 44 had positive QFT-GIT results and 7 had negative results. The sensitivity and specificity of the assay were 86% and 85%, and positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) were 81% and 89%, respectively. CONCLUSION: QFT-GIT is a simple, sensitive, and specific method for the diagnosis of clinically highly suspected TB fistula.

The remnant cystic duct or gallbladder neck calculus may rarely result in post-cholecystectomy Mirizzi syndrome. Various managements have been proposed for the treatment of post-cholecystectomy Mirizzi syndrome. Some previous cases of post-cholecystectomy Mirizzi syndrome have been managed with open cholecystectomy and endoscopically. We report a case of a laparoscopic stone removal of post-cholecystectomy Mirizzi syndrome that developed 7 months after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. To our knowledge, this is the first case of laparoscopic management of post-cholecystectomy Mirizzi syndrome. The mechanism, diagnosis and treatment of post-cholecystectomy Mirizzi syndrome are discussed.

The isolation workflow was guided by a Molecular Networking-based dereplication strategy. The chemical structure of the new compound was elucidated using NMR and MS spectroscopy, and the absolute configuration was established by the Mosher's method. All isolated compounds were evaluated for their inhibitory effects on lipopolysaccharide-induced nitirc oxide production in RAW 264.7 macrophages. Compound 1 showed marginal inhibitory activity with an IC50 value of 118.7 μM.

Many Apiospora species have been isolated from bamboo plants – to date, 34 bambusicolous Apiospora species have been recorded. They are known as saprophytes, endophytes, and plant pathogens. In this study, 242 bambusicolous Apiospora were isolated from various bamboo materials (branches, culms, leaves, roots, and shoots) and examined using DNA sequence similarity based on the internal transcribed spacer, 28S large subunit ribosomal RNA gene, translation elongation factor 1-alpha, and beta-tubulin regions. Nine Apiospora species (Ap. arundinis, Ap. camelliae-sinensis, Ap. hysterina, Ap. lageniformis sp. nov., Ap. paraphaeosperma, Ap. pseudohyphopodii sp. nov., Ap. rasikravindrae, Ap. saccharicola, and Ap. sargassi) were identified via molecular analysis. Moreover, the highest diversity of Apiospora was found in culms, and the most abundant species was Ap. arundinis. Among the nine Apiospora species, two (Ap. hysterina and Ap. paraphaeosperma) were unrecorded in Korea, and the other two species (Ap. lageniformis sp. nov. and Ap. pseudohyphopodii

BACKGROUND: Hepatic steatosis measured with controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) using transient elastography predicts metabolic syndrome in the general population. We investigated whether CAP predicted metabolic syndrome in chronic kidney disease patients. METHODS: CAP was measured with transient elastography in 465 predialysis chronic kidney disease patients (mean age, 57.5 years). RESULTS: The median CAP value was 239 (202–274) dB/m. In 195 (41.9%) patients with metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus was more prevalent (105 [53.8%] vs. 71 [26.3%], P < 0.001), with significantly increased urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (184 [38–706] vs. 56 [16–408] mg/g Cr, P = 0.003), high sensitivity C-reactive protein levels (5.4 [1.4–28.2] vs. 1.7 [0.6–9.9] mg/L, P < 0.001), and CAP (248 [210–302] vs. 226 [196–259] dB/m, P < 0.001). In multiple linear regression analysis, CAP was independently related to body mass index (β = 0.742, P < 0.001), triglyceride levels (β = 2.034, P < 0.001), estimated glomerular filtration rate (β = 0.316, P = 0.001), serum albumin (β = 1.386, P < 0.001), alanine aminotransferase (β = 0.064, P = 0.029), and total bilirubin (β = −0.881, P = 0.009). In multiple logistic regression analysis, increased CAP was independently associated with increased metabolic syndrome risk (per 10 dB/m increase; odds ratio, 1.093; 95% confidence interval, 1.009–1.183; P = 0.029) even after adjusting for multiple confounding factors. CONCLUSION: Increased CAP measured with transient elastography significantly correlated with and could predict increased metabolic syndrome risk in chronic kidney disease patients.
