PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes, and the complications of unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) using a fixed bearing prosthesis after 5-year follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-six knees (25 patients) that underwent fixed bearing UKA between May 2003 and August 2011 were included. The subjects were 3 males (3 knees) and 22 females (23 knees), and the average age was 63.5 years. The preoperative diagnosis was osteoarthritis (23 knees) and osteonecrosis (3 knees). The mean follow-up duration was 67 months (from 60 to 149 months). The clinical evaluation included pre- and postoperative American knee society knee and function score, and range of motion. The radiology evaluation included standing antero-posterior, lateral view, and fluoroscopic film to analyze the postoperative alignment and osteolysis. RESULTS: The mean American Knee Society knee score and function score were improved from 42.0 and 57.5 to 87.9 and 85.0, respectively (p < 0.001). The mean preoperative and postoperative range of motion was 132.9° and 132.5°, respectively. The mean femorotibial angle were varus 0.5° preoperatively and valgus 2.2° postoperatively. A radiolucent line was observed in 2 knees; one knee had a stable implant, while in the other knee, patellofemoral arthritis was identified during UKA. Diffuse pain of the knee joint with tenderness of the medial joint line was identified at the follow-up, so conversion to total knee arthroplasty was recommended. No other complications, such as osteolysis, infections, postoperative stiffness, and dislocation, were encountered. CONCLUSION: The midterm results of fixed bearing UKA were clinically and radiologically satisfactory.

Journal of the Korean Radiological Society 2006;55(3):229-233
Premature menopause can be developed as a result of undesired nontarget ovary embolization during the performance of uterine fibroid embolization. The etiology of ovarian failure after uterine fibroid embolization is not yet clearly defined, but one of the leading possibilities is nontarget embolization of the ovaries. We report here on two cases in which superselective coil embolization of distal uterine artery collateral pathways to the ovary was performed during uterine fibroid embolization.

Orbital complications due to sinusitis usually occur in children and spread from the ethmoid or frontal sinusitis. Periorbital necrotizing fasciitis, which is an aggressive infection characterized by extensive necrosis and gas formation in the fascia and subcutaneous tissue, is uncommon as an orbital complication due to sinusitis. Because most of orbital complications of the fungal sinusitis occur from invasive fungal infection in immunocompromised patients, orbital complications due to non-invasive maxillary fungal ball in healthy patients are extremely rare, especially if the complication is periorbital necrotizing fasciitis. We report a case of periorbital necrotizing fasciitis that occurred in a healthy 44-year-old male patient with non-invasive fungal sinusitis, which was treated with a combination of intravenous antibiotics and endoscopic sinus surgery and ophthalmologic surgical treatment.

Childhood Kidney Diseases 2020;24(1):27-35
Purpose:
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common and serious bacterialinfections in children. Therefore, early diagnosis of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR)for treatment planning and the identification of noninvasive markers that canpredict renal injury are important in patients with UTIs. We analyzed the clinicalfeatures of pediatric UTIs commonly encountered by general practitioners and reinterpretedthe blood tests and imaging findings to identify the important clinicalpredictive markers of VUR in order to selectively perform VCUG.
Methods:
This retrospective study was performed among 183 children diagnosedwith a UTI or acute pyelonephritis.
Results:
The most significant predictor of high grade and bilateral VUR identifiedusing area under the curve analyses was hydronephrosis on kidney ultrasoundimages with renal cortical defects on dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) kidney scansimultaneously, followed by hydronephrosis only on kidney ultrasound.
Conclusion
The presence of hydronephrosis on kidney ultrasound images or corticaldefects or asymmetric kidneys on the DMSA kidney scans can be predictivemarkers of VUR, reducing the need for VCUG. Our study can thus help minimizethe exposure to radiation among patients through selective VCUG.

PURPOSE:
High self-awareness can promote communication and empathy. The Enneagram is a well-known personality tool to enhance self-awareness. We evaluated differences in empathy among medical students using the Enneagram typology.
METHODS:
This cross-sectional study included first and second grade students at the Inje University College of Medicine. The Jefferson Scale of Empathy was used to measure empathy and the Korean Enneagram Personality Type Indicator was used for examining personality characteristics. Empathy scores were analyzed according to the Triads, Hornevian group, Harmonic group, and each Enneagram type.
RESULTS:
The Instinctive triad, the Withdrawns, and the Positive outlook group were the most common, and the Feeling triad, the Assertives, and the Emotional realness group were the least common. Students in the Feeling triad and the Dutifuls had higher compassionate care (CC) scores as compared to their counterparts. Type 2 and 6 students showed the two highest empathy and CC scores. The empathy score of type 3 students was the lowest. Type 7 had the lowest CC score but the highest perspective taking score.
CONCLUSION
These differences in empathy according to Enneagram personality types can be applied to medical education to maintain and improve medical students' empathy.

BACKGROUND: For the effective management of hypertension, drug adherence and life style modification are important. We investigated the effects of mobile phone text-message reminders on compliance and life style modification in patients with hypertension. METHODS: The study was performed at family medicine outpatient clinics at 15 hospitals in South Korea from July 2008 to June 2010. Study subjects included 1,449 patients who were all prescribed candesartan cilexetil. Patients were randomly divided into two groups- mobile phone text-message reminder group and control group. In the reminder group, contents of text messages were recommendations for antihypertensive adherence, exercise, low salt diet, and reduction of weight and alcohol. In the control group, the date of next visit was sent at 10 week. Mobile phone text-messages were sent at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 weeks by the coordinating center. Thereafter, they were followed up for 12 weeks. Chi-square test was performed to compare compliance and performance indexes of the two groups. RESULTS: The reminder group had 719 (49.6%) patients vs. 730 (50.4%) patients in the control group. Attendance rate were 92.8% for the reminder group and 94.7% for the control group (P=0.14). 94.7% of the reminder group and 94.0% of the control group took their medication regularly (P=0.59). The target blood pressure was attained in 75.8% of the reminder group and 75.4% of the control group (P=0.87). Similarly, rates of weight loss, decreased alcohol use, increased physical activity and a low salt diet showed no significant differences between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: In our study, mobile phone text reminders did not show to have any significant positive effect on the management of hypertension.
