Objective:To explore the function of the bridging epithelium between maxillary process and nasal process in the devel-opment of lip and palate.Methods:The fertilized white leghorn chick eggs incubated to the appropriate Hamburger and Hamilton(H-H)stages were examined by tissue histologic studies,scanning electron microscopy observation,BrdU assay and TUNEL assay re-spectively.Results:At H-H stage 24,the epithelia between maxillary,lateral nasal and globular process were juxtaposed.At H-H stage 26-27,string-like filopodia appeared and the bridging epithelium formed,then in the bridging epithelium cell proliferation was decreased and the apoptotic cells appeared.At H-H stage 28,the apoptosis of the bridging epithelium cells increased,the full fusion of the processes was completed.Conclusion:The occurrence of bridging epithelium between maxillary process and nasal process plays an important role in the development of lip and palate.
2.Experiences of Nursing College Students attended to Delivery Practice at Midwifery Clinic.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of nursing college students who attended delivery practices at midwifery clinic. METHODS: This was a qualitative study using focus groups. Data were collected by group interviews with a total of 12 students who observed natural childbirth at midwifery clinic. Data were analyzed through Colaizzi's method in which meaningful statements were extracted. RESULTS: The meanings of experiences were identified five theme clusters from thirteen themes and thirty-one sub-themes. The five theme clusters were 'ultimate process of natural childbirth', 'allowed birth', 'role recognition of the midwife', 'positively changed perception', and 'barriers'. CONCLUSION: This study showed that observation of delivery at midwifery clinic was helpful for nursing students in terms of positive impression about natural childbirth with maternal and baby being centered. Nursing students expressed value and concern about delivery at midwifery clinic. Further in-depth study of natural childbirth in terms of husband and family perspective is required. For quality improvement of maternity nursing care, natural childbirth process needs to be included in nursing care at hospitals as well as students' clinical practicum.

3.Effect of troglitazone on radiation sensitivity in cervix cancer cells.

PURPOSE: Troglitazone (TRO) is a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) agonist. TRO has antiproliferative activity on many kinds of cancer cells via G1 arrest. TRO also increases Cu2+/Zn2+-superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD) and catalase. Cell cycle, and SOD and catalase may affect on radiation sensitivity. We investigated the effect of TRO on radiation sensitivity in cancer cells in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three human cervix cancer cell lines (HeLa, Me180, and SiHa) were used. The protein expressions of SOD and catalase, and catalase activities were measured at 2-10 microM of TRO for 24 hours. Cell cycle was evaluated with flow cytometry. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) was measured using 2',7'-dichlorofluorescin diacetate. Cell survival by radiation was measured with clonogenic assay. RESULTS: By 5 microM TRO for 24 hours, the mRNA, protein expression and activity of catalase were increased in all three cell lines. G0-G1 phase cells were increased in HeLa and Me180 by 5 microM TRO for 24 hours, but those were not increased in SiHa. By pretreatment with 5 microM TRO radiation sensitivity was increased in HeLa and Me180, but it was decreased in SiHa. In Me180, with 2 microM TRO which increased catalase but not increased G0-G1 cells, radiosensitization was not observed. ROS produced by radiation was decreased with TRO. CONCLUSION: TRO increases radiation sensitivity through G0-G1 arrest or decreases radiation sensitivity through catalase-mediated ROS scavenging according to TRO dose or cell types. The change of radiation sensitivity by combined with TRO is not dependent on the PPARgamma expression level.

4.The Relation between the Frequency of Family Gathered Meals and the Body Mass Index-Standard Deviation Score in Elementary Students

BACKGROUND: Skipping family gathered meals, because of lack of time due to increased academic demands, leads to nutritional imbalance and further contributes to obesity among children and teens. This study was conducted to underscore the importance of family gathered meals and to serve as a basis for reducing the prevalence of childhood obesity. METHODS: The relation between frequency of family gathered meals and body mass index-standard deviation score (BMI-SDS) was assessed at 247 elementary students in Gyeonggi-do. Survey based on self reported questionnaire was conducted from April to May of 2013. Parental consents from participants were received and parents were asked to answer the questionnaire together with their children. The questionnaire included questions regarding anthropometric characteristics, socioeconomic informations, number and environmental characteristics of family gathered meals, and eating habits of their children. RESULTS: The average frequency of family gathered breakfast was 3.65+/-2.18 times/week, frequency of family gathered dinner was 6.10+/-1.54 times/week, and frequency of family eating-out was 1.64+/-1.43 times/week. Although the prevalence of family gathered breakfast among the participants was shown to be 51%, the prevalence of skipping breakfast was 14.2%, which was relatively high. The BMI-SDS increased in correlation with less frequent breakfast consumptions (P=0.015) and family gathered breakfasts (P<0.001), also with more frequent family gathered dinners (P=0.001) and family eating-outs (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: The eating frequency of breakfast, family gathered breakfast, family gathered dinner, and the family eating-out is associated with BMI-SDS.

6.The Effects of Nebulizer Therapy with Normal Saline on Postoperative Thirst and Sore Throat

Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of nebulizer therapy with normal saline on thirst and sore throat among postoperative patients.
Methods:
A quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group, pretest-posttest design was used with 50 participants. The experimental group received nebulizer therapy with normal saline every two hours for 10 minutes three times and wet gauze (n= 25), and the control group received only wet gauze (n= 25). Data were collected using the Numeral Rating Scale for Thirst and Sore Throat. Measurements were calculated before applying nebulizer therapy and total five times for 12 hours after treatment. Data were analyzed using the repeated measured ANOVA.
Results:
Thirst for the experimental group using the nebulizer therapy with normal saline improved more than for the control group (F= 3.06, p = .043). Sore throat was not significantly different between the two groups (F= 0.63, p = .565).
Conclusion
Study results indicate that using nebulizer therapy with normal saline can reduced thirst for postoperative patients. So nurses can apply nebulizer therapy with normal saline to reduce thirst and to improve comfort for postoperative patients.
7.Skin corrosion and irritation test of sunscreen nanoparticles using reconstructed 3D human skin model.

OBJECTIVES: Effects of nanoparticles including zinc oxide nanoparticles, titanium oxide nanoparticles, and their mixtures on skin corrosion and irritation were investigated by using in vitro 3D human skin models (KeraSkin(TM)) and the results were compared to those of an in vivo animal test. METHODS: Skin models were incubated with nanoparticles for a definite time period and cell viability was measured by the 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2.5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide method. Skin corrosion and irritation were identified by the decreased viability based on the pre-determined threshold. RESULTS: Cell viability after exposure to nanomaterial was not decreased to the pre-determined threshold level, which was 15% after 60 minutes exposure in corrosion test and 50% after 45 minutes exposure in the irritation test. IL-1alpha release and histopathological findings support the results of cell viability test. In vivo test using rabbits also showed non-corrosive and non-irritant results. CONCLUSIONS: The findings provide the evidence that zinc oxide nanoparticles, titanium oxide nanoparticles and their mixture are 'non corrosive' and 'non-irritant' to the human skin by a globally harmonized classification system. In vivo test using animals can be replaced by an alternative in vitro test.

8.Splenic Infarction due to Torsion of Wandering Spleen: A Case Report.

Wandering spleen is very rare condition in children characterized by migration of the spleen from its normal position due to laxity or absence of the supporting splenic ligaments. We experienced a case of splenic infarction due to torsion of a wandering spleen in a 6-year-old boy who presented with fever, vomiting, and abdominal pain of 2 day's duration. On physical examination, there was severe tenderness in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen. The plain abdominal radiograph showed marked colonic gaseous distension. Contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography scan showed decreased density of spleen in the normal position, consistent with infarction. At emergency laparotomy, a wandering spleen twisted 360degrees on its pedicle was found. Despite splenic detorsion, blood flow could not be restored. Splenectomy was therefore performed. The child was discharged 7 days after surgery without any complications.

9.High fructose and high fat diet increased bone volume of trabecular and cortical bone in growing female rats.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of a high fructose and fat diet on bone growth and maturation in growing female rats. METHODS: Three-week-old female SD rats were randomly assigned to four experimental groups; the control group (CON: fed control diet based on AIN-93G, n = 8); the high-fructose diet group (HFrc: fed control diet with 30% fructose, n = 8); the high-fat diet group (Hfat: fed control diet with 45 kcal% fat, n = 8); and the high-fat diet plus high fructose group (HFrc + HFat: fed diets 45 kcal% fat with 30% fructose, n = 8). Each group was assigned their respective diets for the remaining eight weeks. Bone-related parameters (bone mineral density (BMD) and structural parameters, osteocalcin (OC), deoxypyridinoline (DPD)) and morphologic changes of kidney were analyzed at the end of the experiment. RESULTS: Final body weights and weight gain were higher in the HFat and HFrc + HFat groups and showed higher tendency in the HFrc group compared with those of the CON group (p < 0.05); however, no significant difference in caloric intake was observed among the four experimental groups. The serum OC levels of the HFrc and HFrc + HFat groups were lower than those of the CON and HFat groups (p < 0.05). Urinary levels of DPD did not differ among the experimental groups. BV/TV and Tb.N of trabecular bone were higher in the HFrc + HFat group and showed a higher tendency in the HFrc group than those of the CON and HFat groups (p < 0.05). Tb.Pf of trabecular bone were lower in the HFrc + HFat group than those in the CON and HFat groups (p < 0.05). However, no difference in trabecular BMD was observed among the experimental groups. Cortical bone volume was higher in the HFat and HFrc + HFat groups than in the CON and HFrc groups (p < 0.05). No morphology change in kidney was observed among the experimental groups. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that 8 weeks of high-fructose and high fat intake could improve the bone quality (Structural parameters) of trabecular and cortical bone of tibia in growing female rats.

10.Sertoli-Leydig Cell Tumor of the Ovary in a 4 year-old Girl: A Case Report.

Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor is a rare sex-cord stromal tumor of the ovary. They make up less than 0.5 % of all ovarian tumors. We experienced a case of an ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor in a 4 year-old girl who presented with nausea, vomiting, and lower abdominal pain of 2 days' duration. On physical examination, there was mild tenderness in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen. Abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a pelvic mass measuring 5 x 3 cm that appeared to arise from the right ovary. At exploratory laparotomy, a 6 x 5 x 3 cm solid right ovarian mass without torsion was found. A right salpingo-oophorectomy was performed. The postoperative course was uneventful. The child was discharged 5 days after surgery.
