Human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is generally used to identify highly degraded forensic samples, particularly when the extracted DNA is not sufficient for nuclear DNA analysis. However, direct sequencing, the most widely used mtDNA analysis method, is laborious and time-consuming, and precludes the simultaneous analysis of many samples. Here, we describe a rapid and simple screening method for mtDNA analysis in Koreans using single base extension (SBE) methods. Sixteen highly polymorphic mtDNA SNPs from the control region were selected, and a multiplex SBE system was constructed to analyze them. Because the developed system consists of two duplex PCRs, which produce small amplicons with fewer than 270 bp, it works well with highly degraded samples such as old skeletal remains. Using this multiplex SBE system, 145 different haplotypes were expected to be observed from 593 unrelated Koreans. Seventy-three haplotypes were expected to be observed only once, and the most frequent haplotype was expected to occur 80 times. Since the mean number of pairwise differences was estimated to be 4.55, the developed system could be useful to exclude samples that do not match evidence and reference samples. Therefore, the multiplex SBE system used in this study will be a useful tool to analyze many samples simultaneously and to efficiently screen out non-matching mtDNA sequences in forensic casework.

Journal of Korean Clinical Nursing Research 2023;29(1):107-120
Purpose:
The purpose of this program is to develop an educational program to improve the nursing management competency of middle-level nursing managers.
Methods:
The program outline is based on the results of the Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) and Systematic Review (SR). Also performed the content validity accordingly.
Results:
The result of the concepts are derived from 6 competencies for planning process, 4 competencies for organizing process, 4 competencies for staffing process, 26 competencies for directing process, and 12 competencies for controlling process by integrating IPA and SR. This outline of the program was constructed according to the derived integrated concept and both content validity and structured outline were interpreted as valid.
Conclusion
This suggests that middle-level managers need a systematic program and support to effectively lead the organization by recognizing the importance rather than performance.

Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing 2002;32(6):775-783
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to provide basic data on preventive child abuse program development. METHOD: Data were collected on 105 high-risk families of child abuse intervention was obtained from their main child rearer who raised the child under 18 years, olds during 10 months period from May, 2000 to March 2001. RESULT: The results were as follows : 1. Child abuse occurred in the subject's home, in the case of mild child abuse, 'throwing an object at the child' had the highest percentage 39.1%, in severe child abuse, 'rod, stick, belt, broom beating or using a variety of objects such as' had the highest percentage 49.5%, and in very severe child abuse, 'hospitalized by belting' had the highest percentage 3.8%. 2. The degree of child abuse potential showed high risk child abuse score with a mean of 213.3. The degree of beliefs in corporal punishment showed that subjects perceived corporal punishment of children positively with a mean of 32.2. 3. With respect to the child abuse potential, there were significant correlations with the subjects' age (r=.294, p=.002), education level (r=-.442, p=.000), and family income (r=-.355, p=.000). CONCLUSION: From this study not only child abuse occurrence but also child abuse potential were severely increased in poor livelihood families. Therefore to the high risk group, individual preventive approach must be applied.

Yonsei Medical Journal 2008;49(4):530-536
PURPOSE: Since 1997, private postnatal care facilities (San-hu-jo-ri-won in Korean) have emerged to take the role of the family. As a result, neonates are now exposed to many people and are very vulnerable to infection. However, there has been no study on the influence of postnatal care facilities on neonatal infection. The aim of this study was to determine the risk factors of neonatal infection in full-term babies in Korea. MATERIALS and METHODS: We followed up 556 pregnant women and their babies for 4 weeks after their births at 2 hospitals in Seoul and Daejeon from October 2004 to September 2005. Among 512 full-term babies, 58 had infectious diseases. To determine the risk factors for infection, 53 infected neonates at 4-28 days of life and 413 healthy neonates were compared. RESULTS: The incidence of neonatal infection at 4 to 28 days after birth was 10.5%. After adjusting the related factors, the number of siblings (OR = 2.05, 95% CI = 1.13-3.71 for 1 or more) and postnatal care facilities or home aides (OR = 1.91, 95% CI = 1.07-3.45) were significant risk factors. Formula or mixed feeding (OR = 1.66, 95% CI = 0.91-3.04) increased the risk of neonatal infection but it was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: When the newborns had siblings, stayed at postnatal care facilities, or were cared for by home aides, the risk of neonatal infections significantly increased. Further research on the feeding effect on neonatal infection and evaluation of prevention efforts are needed.

Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing 2003;33(6):722-730
PURPOSE: This study attempted to describe the essential structure of the lived experience of a students transferring into the nursing program. METHOD: The data was collected from 14 graduates and undergraduates who enrolled in nursing school as transfer students. The analysis of the data was made by phenominological analytic method suggested by Colaizzi(1978). RESULT: In this study, 6 essential themes were extracted: 'Constant anxiety of being a stranger', 'Feeling of constant burden', 'Thankfulness of a clinical practice group', 'Being supportive with each other between transferring students', 'Pleasure of studying a desired major', 'Feeling the responsibility of own choice of a new major'. CONCLUSION: With rapidly increasing number of transferring students, the significance of this study in the field of nursing is that by understanding the transferring experience of nursing students, it describes the need of systematic and emotional support for transferring students.

Korean Journal of Anesthesiology 1984;17(1):79-82
In view of the current trend towards carrying out termination of pregnancy as day cases it is also important that the patient should be free from pain with a rapid recovery from anesthesia and a minimum of post operative sequalae. We compared the effects of three other anesthetic techniques for the termination of pregnancy in 100 healthy womes as day cases. 1) Anesthesia with thiopental sodium alone was associated with a high score of pain sensation(2+/-0.93) and with considerably rapid recovery(103+/-57.6 mins). 2) The combination of thiopental sodium and meperidine was associated with a lower score of pain sensation(1.58+/-0.8) and with rapidl recovery(101+/-56.4 mins). 3) Meperidine with diazepam was associated with the lowest score of pain sensation(1.4+/-0.69), but had prolonged recovery time(206+/-126 mins) twice that of other techniques. It was conclued that the combination A thiopental sodium and meperidine was the technique of choice for termination of pregnancy as day-cases.

9.Self-Efficacy and Self-Care Behavior in Patients with Unruptured Intracranial Aneurysm after Treatment with Coil Embolization
Hyun Song SHIN ; Jeong Hye KIM
Korean Journal of Health Promotion 2023;23(2):94-103
Background:
This study aimed to identify the self-efficacy and self-care behaviors in patients with an unruptured intracranial aneurysm who have undergone coil embolization.
Methods:
A cross-sectional study was conducted to 143 patients who were diagnosed with unruptured intracranial aneurysm and visited the outpatient department of radiology for follow-up management after performing coil embolization at a tertiary hospital, Seoul. The self-efficacy and self-care behaviors were measured using self-reported questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed with independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation using the SPSS/win 26.0 statistical programs (IBM Corp, Armonk, NY, USA).
Results:
The mean score of self-efficacy in patients with an unruptured intracranial aneurysm was 3.49±0.55 out of 5. The mean score of self-care behaviors was 3.69±0.66 out of 5. The self-efficacy exhibited statistically significant differences depending on the size and number of the cerebral aneurysms and the presence of such aneurysms remaining after treatment. There was a positive correlation between self-efficacy and self-care behaviors (r=0.37, P=0.001). Regression analysis revealed that the patient's self-care behaviors of the patients was explained by self-efficacy (β=0.37, P<0.001) and these variables explained 13.3% of the variance in self-care behaviors (F=22.86, P<0.001).
Conclusions
In order to increase self-care behaviors, it is necessary to develop self-efficacy interventions so that an unruptured intracranial aneurysm who have undergone coil embolization can effectively cope with various difficulties during treatment course.

Korean Journal of Pathology 1999;33(6):467-470
Intraosseous lipoma is a very rare primary tumor of the bone. We report four cases of intraosseous lipoma. The patient ranged in age from 34 to 59-year-old (median age: 35 year-old). There were three men and one woman. All of four cases presented with pain. The involved bones were calcaneus in two cases, tibia in one case and ilium in one case, respectively. In all cases plain x-ray film revealed well-defined lytic lesion. Their size ranged 2 to 4.5 cm (mean size: 3.5 cm). Histologic examination showed mature adipose tissue. Three cases showed secondary changes such as atrophic bone, fat necrosis, fibrosis, dystrophic calcification, and reactive ischemic bone formation. The clinicopathologic and roentgenographic correlation are necessary in establishing correct diagnosis of this tumor.
