Purpose: This study aimed to identify the factors influencing abnormal eating behavior among adults who visit obesity clinics. Methods: Questionnaires were used to collect data from 234 adults who visit obesity clinics at K University Hospital. The questions included eating attitude, alexithymia, and depression. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Scheffétest, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. Results: Abnormal eating behaviors were significantly associated with alexithymia, depression, and body mass index. The predictors of abnormal eating behaviors were depression, body mass index, difficulty identifying feelings, perceived economic status, body image perception, and gender, which explained 28% (Adj. R2=.28) of the abnormal eating behaviors. Conclusion The findings revealed a need for educational programs that can contribute to desirable eating behaviors and strategies for healthy weight control. In addition, a support program should be availed to help them recognize and properly express their feelings along with prevention and management of depression.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate a ‘patient empowerment program for schizophrenia (PEPS)’ to improve problem solving ability, quality of life, and mental health literacy for hospitalized patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: The study was a non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design. Study participants were recruited from a psychiatric hospital in Republic of Korea. Of 56 participants, 20 were assigned to the experimental group and 36 to the control group. Data were collected from September, 2017 to January, 2018. Data analyses included chi-squared or Fisher's exact tests, t-tests, and repeated measure ANOVA with SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. RESULTS: After participating PEPS, the experimental group showed a significant increase in quality of life and mental health literacy compared to the control group. However, there were no significant differences in problem solving ability between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Findings show that patients with schizophrenia receive benefits from PEPS in terms of quality of life and mental health literacy. However, further research is necessary to develop clinical strategies to improve their problem solving abilities.

PURPOSE: This study identifies research trends and provides fundamental data related to curative power of aromatherapy to relieve pain in Korea. METHODS: The study analyzed 44 experimental studies on humans that were published in Korea before the end of December, 2009. The key words used for searching were: aroma, aromatherapy, hyang-yobeob, hyanggi-yobeob, hyanggichilyo, aromatherapy and pain, headache, scapulodynia, omodynia, feeling uncomfortable in the perineal region, sense of pain, labor pains, arm pain, menstrual pain, aches, and dysmenorrheal. Those words were found on websites, including those for Korea Education & Research Information Service, the National Assembly Library, KISS, KoreaMed, and NDSL. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. RESULTS: The results showed that most of essential oils to relieve pain is composed of three to four kinds of oils, including Lavender, Roman chamomile, Rosemary, and Clarysage. Aromatherapy is applied usually by means of massage (50%), inhalation (13.6%), or a combination of the above two (13.6%). Measuring instruments as a dependent variable include VAS, questionnaire, GRS, blood pressure, pulse, and Algometer. Aromatherapy plays an important role in soothing headaches and arthralgia. However, when it comes to labor and menstrual pain, it doesn't seem to be effective. CONCLUSION: The study found that different kinds of oil, frequencies, and periods of time are used for the same symptoms. Further research should employ standardized oil blending, application, duration, and measuring instruments, and more systematically analyze the effects of aromatherapy to establish the effects on relieving pain.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of a teaching program on patients with myocardial infarction. Forty-five patients were randomly selected 22 were assigned to a teaching group and 23 to a control group. An individualized teaching program was delivered to the teaching group during the hospitalization period. It covered aspects such as: the characteristics of heart disease, the anatomy and physiology of the heart, risk factors of atherosclerosis, medication and diet and exercise therapy. When these subjects were discharged to their homes, they received regular supportive care via telephone or mail for 12 weeks. Atherosclerotic risk factors, including, smoking, exercise, blood lipid profile and BMI were measured before and after the teaching program. Post-testing revealed that the numbers of those who exercised and the number of non-smokers were significantly higher in the teaching group than in the control group. Increased HDL cholesterol (High-Density Lipoprotein cholesterol) was significantly greater in the teaching group than in the control group. The above findings suggest that this individualized teaching program might be helpful at reducing the risk factors of atherosclerosis in myocardial infarction patients.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the macular function by a multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG) in patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR), and to assess the correlation between responses of mfERG and the threshold of the visual field test (VF). METHODS: The records of patients with DR (16 eyes, 16 patients) and control subjects (14 eyes, 14 subjects) were retrospectively reviewed. mfERG and VF were divided into Ring 1, Ring 2 and Ring 3 at 6-degree intervals from the central macula. The correlation between the amplitude/peak time and the threshold of each ring was analyzed. RESULTS: In patients with DR, the amplitude was decreased in all areas, the peak time was delayed in Ring 2 and the threshold was decreased in Rings 2 and 3, compared to control subjects. The amplitude of mfERG and the threshold of VF showed statistically significant positive correlations in Rings 2 and 3 (p < 0.05). The peak time of mfERG and the threshold of VF showed statistically significant negative correlations in Ring 3 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The threshold of VF was more significantly correlated with the amplitude than with the peak time of mfERG in patients with DR. mfERG and VF were useful tests to assess the macular function, and alteration of macular function was early detected because two tests were conducted at the same time.

Fall is a major threat to the stroke patients. The purpose of this study is to find out the potential risk factors for recurrent falls in the stroke patients. The subjects were sampled 20 hemiplegic fallers who experienced at least one fall at the stroke center of Hangkang Sacred Heart hospital. Balance subscale and gait scale of Tinetti was used as a screening test for referral to mobility fuction. The potential contributing factors for fall were social activity, impulsivity, congnition, motivation. These factors were correlated with falls. The authors also surveyed the places, postures of activities, and injurires from falls. The falls occurred 2.5 times average in studied subjects and is most of subjects the first fall occurred in their first month of standing and gait training. 58.3% of falls occurred indoor(33.3% in room), 29.2% at hospital, 12.5% outdoor. The activities related to fall were walking 36.8%, rising from a chair 36.8%, sitting 10.5%. Although, most(75%) of injuries were soft tissue contusions or strains, the other 25.1% of falls accompanied fractures. The femur fracture was 18.8%, and compressed spine fracture was 6.3%. The social activity was most strongly correlated with falls with high correlation coefficent of 0.72. The other factors were not significant with lower coefficient values, balance scale of 0.35, gait scale of 0.24, motivation of 0.40, congnition of 0.26, impulsivity of ?0.19. It was suggested that activity plays an important mediating risk factor for falls in the stroke patients. These data support the concept of preventive strategy for falls in the stroke patients who are at risk.

Burn patients with associated limb amputations present demanding rehabilitation problems, many of which might lead them to chronic issues. The authors studied 77 male and 9 female burn patients with amputations. Most amputations occurred with high voltage electrical burns. The fingers were the most frequent target for amputations. The most frequent site of amputation was the entrance at the right side and multiple amputation in nature. The prosthetic fittings were delayed because of burn wounds and grafts and fragile skin at the stump. Also, limited range of motion, decreased strength, hypertrophic scar contracture, heterotopic ossification and bony overgrowth were additional limiting factors. We conclude that early rehabilitation intervention would be critical to prevent complications and to improve rehabilitation outcome of burn amputee patients.

Luteolin, a flavonoid present in several fruits, vegetables, nuts, and herbs reportedly exhibits anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the effect of luteolin on endometriosis, a painful condition characterized by the ectopic growth of endometrial tissue and pelvic inflammation, remains elusive. Herein, we observed that luteolin inhibited cell growth and induced apoptosis of 12Z human endometriotic cells by activating caspase-3, -8, and -9. Additionally, luteolin significantly inhibited the expression of key chemokines, C-C motif chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2) and CCL5, required for monocyte/macrophage influx at endometriotic sites. In macrophages stimulated by endometriotic cells, luteolin treatment suppressed the intracellular expression of M2 markers and endometriosis-promoting factors. Collectively, our data suggest that luteolin exerts anti-endometriotic effects by stimulating endometriotic cell apoptosis and hindering the alternative activation of macrophages.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the retrieval rate and accuracy of ultrasound (US)-guided 14-G semi-automated core needle biopsy (CNB) for microcalcifications in the breast. MATERIALS AND METHODS: US-guided 14-G semi-automated CNB procedures and specimen radiography were performed for 33 cases of suspicious microcalcifications apparent on sonography. The accuracy of 14-G semi-automated CNB and radiology-pathology concordance were analyzed and the microcalcification characteristics between groups with successful and failed retrieval were compared. RESULTS: Thirty lesions were successfully retrieved and the microcalcification retrieval rate was 90.9% (30/33). Thirty lesions were successfully retrieved. Twenty five were finally diagnosed as malignant (10 invasive ductal carcinoma, 15 ductal carcinoma in situ [DCIS]) and five as benign. After surgery and mammographic follow-up, the 25 malignant lesions comprised 12 invasive ductal carcinoma and 13 DCIS. Three lesions in the failed retrieval group (one DCIS and two benign) were finally diagnosed as two DCIS and one benign after surgery. The accuracy of 14-G semi-automated CNB was 90.9% (30/33) because of two DCIS underestimates and one false-negative diagnosis. The discordance rate was significantly higher in the failed retrieval group than in the successful retrieval group (66.7% vs. 6.7%; p < 0.05). Punctate calcifications were significantly more common in the failed retrieval group than in the successful retrieval group (66.7% vs. 3.7%; p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: US-guided 14-G semi-automated CNB could be a useful procedure for suspicious microcalcifications in the breast those are apparent on sonography.
