1.MR Findings of Meniscal Cysts.

PURPOSE: To characterize MR findings of meniscal cysts of the knee. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed knee MR images of surgically confirmed eighteen meniscal cysts. The location and shape of meniscal cysts were evaluated. RESULTS: Six of 18 cases were medial meniscal cysts and 12 of 18 cases were lateral meniscal cysts. Horizontal tears were present in all cases(100%). Four of 18 cases had rounded cysts and 14 of 18 cases had elongated cysts. In 3 of 6 medial meniscal cysts, cysts had dissected into the soft tissues distant from the meniscus, and connecting stalks were visualized. Three of 6 medial meniscal cysts were located adjacent to a meniscal tear. All of the lateral meniscal cysts occurred immediately adjacent to the meniscal tear. CONCLUSION: Meniscal cysts are associated with horizontal meniscal tear. The shapes of meniscal cysts tend to be elongated rather than rounded. Medial meniscal cysts occurred distant from or adjacent to the meniscal tear according to location of the tear. Lateral meniscal cysts occurred adjacent to the meniscal tear.

3.Effects of activators contained in adhesives on dentin bond strengths.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: An incompatibility between the initiator systems of self-curing composite resins and light-curing adhesives was supposed recently. PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the influence of activators for self/dual bonding on dentin shear bonding strengths. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty human molars were divided into 5 groups. A flat dentin surface was created for each tooth. A self-curing composite resin (Luxacore) was bonded with the following adhesives (n = 10): One-Step, Prime and Bond NT, AdheSE, Prime and Bond NT and AdheSe were also used in combination with activators. Shear bond strengths were measured after 24 hours of water storage. The specimens were loaded in shear in the Instron until failure at a 1 mm/min crosshead speed. Data were compared using one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD test (alpha = 0.05). RESULTS: The dentin adhesive systems in order of decreasing median bond strength were One-Step > Prime & Bond NT with activator, AdheSe with activator > Prime and Bond NT, AdheSe. Among adhesives, One-Step had the highest bond strength. Prime & Bond NT with activator had higher bond strengths than Prime and Bond NT that was used alone, and so was AdheSe. CONCLUSION: Shear bond strengths were increased in Prime and Bond NT and AdheSe when these were used with activators comparing used without activators. But using activators was not effective clinically comparing One-Step.

4.Effects of Anti-Smoking Public Service Announcements on the Attitudes of Korean College Students toward Smoking.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify the effects of anti-smoking public service announcements on the attitudes of Korean college students toward smoking. METHODS: This study involved students via convenience sampling from seven universities who were randomly assigned to four groups. All groups completed a preliminary questionnaire, before being shown a public service announcement twice, and then completed a post viewing questionnaire. RESULTS: For announcements with positive messages, the proportion of changes in beliefs and attitudes were 39.1% and 19.8%, respectively, whereas those with negative messages showed a greater proportion of changes in the beliefs (59.7%) and attitudes (40.3%). After adjusting for sex and change in belief, the message types and smoking status were identified as factors affecting the change in the participants attitudes. A negative message resulted in a greater change in attitudes (odds ratio [OR], 3.047; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.847–5.053). Ever-smokers including current smokers showed a greater positive change in attitude than never-smokers (OR, 6.965; 95% CI, 4.107–11.812). CONCLUSION: This study found that positive anti-smoking public service announcements were more effective on attitude change than negative messages. Additionally these announcements were more effective among viewers who were current smokers or had a prior smoking experience.

5.Dental Age Estimation Using the Demirjian Method: Statistical Analysis Using Neural Networks

In children and adolescents, dental age estimation is performed with the development of the teeth. Various statistical analysis methods have been used to determine the relationship between age and dental maturity and develop an accurate method of age calculation. This study attempted to apply a neural network model for the statistical analysis of dental age estimation in children and evaluated its applicability. This study used 1196 panoramic radiographs of patients aged 3–16 years, and 996 and 200 were randomly classified into training and test sets, respectively. The dental maturity of the mandibular left teeth was evaluated using Demirjian's method, the neural network model using the backpropagation algorithm was derived using training sets, and the errors were evaluated using 100 radiographs of each male and female as test sets. In addition, multiple linear regression analysis was conducted on the same training set, and the error was calculated by applying it to the test set and comparing it with the error of the neural network model. In the neural network model, the mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean squared error (RMSE) were 0.589 and 0.783 in male subjects and 0.529 and 0.760 in female subjects, respectively. In the multiple linear regression model, the MAE and RMSE were 0.600 and 0.748 in male subjects and 0.566 and 0.789 in female subjects, respectively. When applying the neural network model to the statistical analysis of the dental developmental stage, the results were as accurate as those of conventional statistical analysis methods. This study’s approach is expected to be useful for estimating the ages of children.
6.The Molecular Genetic Study Using Automatic Sequence Analyzer on the Steroidogenic Acute Relulatory Protein(StAR) Gene.

PURPOSE:The lesion of Congenital Lipoid Adrenal Hyperplasia has been suggested to be in the 1st step of steroidogenesis of conversion of cholesterol to pregnenolone by P450scc. In 1995, however, the molecular defect of this disease has been located in the transport of cholesterol into mitochondria due to defective regulatory protein called Steroidogenic Acute Regulatory Protein(StAR), while the enzyme P450scc itself is normal. This genetic study using automatic sequence analyzer aimed at elucidating the molecular defect in the StAR gene of the two patients. METHODS:This study was performed on the two patients of Congenital Lipoid Adrenal Hyperplasia. Both children were phenotypically females. However, one turned out to have a karyotype of 46, XY, the other 46, XX. Genomic DNAs were extracted from their peripheral blood. We amplified the last exon, hot spot, of the StAR gene using 1 set of primer, S4, 5'-CCT GGC AGC CTG TTT GTG ATA G-3' AS4, 5'-CCT CAT GTC ATA GCT AAT CAG TG-3'. Subsequently, one PCR product have been directly sequenced by dideoxy termination method, and also the other products(patient's and her father's) have been sequenced by automatic sequence analyzer. RESULTS:The mutation was identified in the last exon of the StAR gene, substituting T for A at codon 258, replacing glutamine by stop codon in the two unrelated Korean patients with congenital lipoid adrenal hyperplasia. One patient were found to be homozygote, but the other to be heterozygote for the mutation. CONCLUSIONS:These results indicate that Korean children with congenital lipoid adrenal hyperplasia may be genetically identical as in Japanese. But, we discovered that the hot spot, codon 258, are not always homozygote. We want to emphasize the different point, and to say that we did experiece the automatic sequence analyzer successfully.

7.Performance Evaluation of Public Hospital Information Systems by the Information System Success Model.

OBJECTIVES: This study was to evaluate the performance of the newly developed information system (IS) implemented on July 1, 2014 at three public hospitals in Korea. METHODS: User satisfaction scores of twelve key performance indicators of six IS success factors based on the DeLone and McLean IS Success Model were utilized to evaluate IS performance before and after the newly developed system was introduced. RESULTS: All scores increased after system introduction except for the completeness of medical records and impact on the clinical environment. The relationships among six IS factors were also analyzed to identify the important factors influencing three IS success factors (Intention to Use, User Satisfaction, and Net Benefits). All relationships were significant except for the relationships among Service Quality, Intention to Use, and Net Benefits. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that hospitals should not only focus on systems and information quality; rather, they should also continuously improve service quality to improve user satisfaction and eventually reach full the potential of IS performance.

8.A Case of Polyarteritis Nodosa Mimicking Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a rare systemic necrotizing vasculitis involving multiple organ system. Systemic lupus erythematousus (SLE) also presented as a vasculitic symptoms. So, systemic vasculitis and SLE share some clinical features. We report a case of polyarteritis nodosa mimicking SLE. A 45-year-old woman was admitted due to oliguria. She diagnosed SLE because of pericardial effusion, hemolytic anemia, proteinuria, hematuria, and positivity of anti-dsDNA antibody. But she re-diagnosed as PAN through renal angiography and renal biopsy afterwards. She was treated with high dose steroid, cyclophosphamide, and anti-TNF-alpha antibody, but didn't respond those therapies.

9.A Case of Neonatal Bartter Syndrome.

Bartter and Bartter-like syndromes, which include classic Bartter syndrome(type III), neonatal Bartter syndrome(type I, II or IV) and Gitelman syndrome, are autosomal - recessively inherited renal tubular disorders characterized by hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis, salt wasting and normal to low blood pressure. Neonatal Bartter syndrome is characterized by intrauterine polyhydramnios, premature delivery, life-threatening episodes of fever and dehydration, subsequent failure to thrive, and severe hypercalciuria with nephrocalcinosis and osteopenia. It is caused by mutations in NKCC2(type I), ROMK(type II) or BSND(type IV) genes. If diagnosed and treated early, the progression to renal failure can be prevented and catch-up growth and normal development are achieved. We report here a 6 month-old infant with neonatal Bartter syndrome who presented with hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis, polyhydramnios and premature delivery, persistent high fever and dehydration, failure to thrive, hypercalciuria, and nephrocalcinosis. He received indomethacin and potassium chloride per os and showed catch-up growth and normal developmental profile at 19 months of age.

10.Acute Motor Axonal Neuropathy Associated with Anti-GM1 Antibody: A case report.

Guillain-Barre syndrme (GBS) has several subtypes that are divided by clinical, electro- physiological, and pathological findings. A novel form of GBS, that is termed acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN), is characterized by the selective involvement of motor fibers, and is associated with anti-GM1 antibodies. A 8-year-old male patient were developed ascending, symmetrical paralysis, and areflexia, but no sensory disturbance. Elevated titers of serum IgG anti-GM1 antibodies were detected. His thoracolumbar spine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed thickening of cauda equina and enhancement of anterior nerve roots of T12-L1 spinal level after Gd-DTPA infusion. Electrophysiological diagnosis was acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN). We report this case with review of the literature.
