1.Nursing Students' Perceptions on Diet and as Environmental Factors Related to Cancer Risk Factors.

The purpose of this study was to identify how students majoring in nursing perceive cause of cancers and the effects of diet for preventing cancers. Data for the study were collected by 651 nursing students, who were registered in the second and third year in three technical colleges and third and fourth year in two universities. The research instruments included items on general characteristics of subjects, items about the degree of perception of the frequency of cancer onset and items on the perception of mortality, risk factors, preventive diets, knowledge, and high risk factor for cancer in specific body areas. The findings of this study are as follows : 1. Almost all subjects(92.8%) reported that the frequency of cancer onset increases and that it is 93.9% for people over 40. Degree of perception about cancer mortality was low at 33.0%. 2. As far as the perception of risk factors for cancer onset was concerned, smoking, stress, heredity, family history, and alcohol were rated high, over 80.0%. Risk factor in clouding, virus, hormones, pesticides were rated as low. 3. As to the perception of risk factor for body area as associated with diet salted and scorched food were rated at 44.5% for stomach cancer, alcohol, 50.4% for liver cancer, smoking, 72.8% for lung cancer, pregnancy times, 25.3%, and marriage age, 23.0% for uterine cancer, and no delivery experience, 40% for breast cancer. 4. The knowledge score for cancer was between 12 and 36, with a mean score of 26.75(SD=4.13). There was a statistically significant difference between experience in caring for cancer patients during clinical practice and knowledge score(t=3.09, p=.002).

2.An evaluation of canal curvature at the apical one third in type II mesial canals of mandibular molars.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the buccolingual curvature at the apical one third in type II mesial canals of mandibular molars using the radius and angle of curvature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Total 100 mandibular molars were selected. Following an endodontic access in the teeth, their distal roots were removed. #15 H- or K-files (Dentsply Maillefer) were inserted into the mesiobuccal and mesiolingual canals of the teeth. Radiographs of the teeth were taken for the proximal view. Among them, type II canals were selected and divided into two subgroups, IIa and IIb. In type IIa, two separate canals merged into one canal before reaching the apex and in type IIb, two separate canals merged into one canal within the apical foramen. The radius and angle of curvature of specimens were examined. RESULTS: In type II, mean radius of curvature in mesiolingual and mesiobuccal canals were 2.82 mm and 3.58 mm, respectively. The radius of the curvature of mesiolingual canals were significantly smaller than that of mesiobuccal canals in type II, and especially in type IIa. However, there were no statistically significant differences in radius of curvature between mesiobuccal and mesiolingual canals in type IIb and there were no significant differences in angle of curvature between type IIa and IIb. CONCLUSION: In this study, type II mesial canals of mandibular molars showed severe curvature in the proximal view. Especially, mesiolingual canals of type IIa had more abrupt curvature than mesiobuccal canals at the apical one third.

3.Treatment of Psychiatric Symptoms in a Patient with Neuroacanthocytosis: A Case Report.

Neuroacanthocytosis is a rare hereditary disorder characterized by various neurological symptoms and the presence of abnormal red blood cell called acanthocytosis. Degeneration of striatum, which accounts for characteristic motor and psychiatric symptoms, mainly attributes to the pathology of neuroacanthocytosis. We experienced a case of chorea-acanthocytosis. He was a 50 year-old-man who presented with orofacial dyskinesia, dysarthria, uncontrolled lip biting, generalized choreic movements and sensorymotor polyneuropathy. He was also suffered from obsessive eating behavior, disinhibition, impulsivity and sleep disturbance. After antipsychotic medication, his psychiatric problems were improved. Clinicians must consider psychiatric managements of progressive neurological disorder for patients' quality of life and reducing their caregiver's burden.

4.Genome Sequencing of Human Cytomegalovirus Strain LCW and Identification of Asia-specific Cluster.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a ubiquitous human pathogen and contains double stranded DNA genome with approximately 230 kbp. Molecular genomic studies of HCMV have been attempted in order to understand the pathogenesis and evolution of HCMV. However, studies on HCMV strains of Asian origin are limited. In this study, it was attempted to understand the genomics of HCMV isolated from Korea. Clinical strain LCW isolated from Korean patient was passaged in vitro cell culture, and subjected to next-generation sequencing. Complete genome sequence was obtained and compared with other HCMV strains. The LCW genome was found to contain 170 open reading frames (ORFs) and two ORF (RL5A and RL13) of the strain LCW were found to be truncated due to early stop codon. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that the strain LCW was closely related with Asian strains such as HCMV strains JHC and HAN. Common nucleotide sequences among the 3 Asian strains distinguishable from other strains were detected at 197 sites including 104 sites in ORFs.

5.Full-mouth rehabilitation by immediate implantation combined with orthognathic surgery: a clinical report.

Clinical therapy that combines full-mouth rehabilitation with immediate implantation and orthognathic surgery poses a challenge to prosthodontists. This clinical report describes a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of a patient presenting with skeletal discrepancy and rampant caries. The results thus achieved indicate that full-mouth rehabilitation by fixed immediate and early loading implantation accompanied by orthognathic surgery can be a predictable and effective treatment procedure.

6.Evaluation of Nutritional Status among Primary School Children in Uganda: Comparison of Urban and Rural Areas

Objectives:
The aim of this study was to investigate dietary intakes and nutritional status among Uganda primary school children from two selected schools in urban and rural areas.
Methods:
Data were collected from 350 pupils (6-14 years) in Mpigi district, Uganda. All participants were offered a school lunch meal (usually maize porridge and boiled beans). Dietary survey was conducted in October 2016. Data for dietary intake levels were collected by the 24-hour recall method with trained school staffs. The data were converted into nutrient intakes using the CAN-Pro 5.0 Program and compared with KDRIs to evaluate the nutritional status of the subjects. Diet quality indexes such as nutrient density, nutrient adequacy ratio (NAR), mean adequacy ratio (MAR), and index of nutritional quality (INQ) and a diet diversity index such as diet diversity score (DDS) were calculated to evaluate nutritional status among subjects. Data were analyzed using SPSS statistical programs.
Results:
Results show that the intakes of most nutrients were significantly different by schools. The nutritional status of micro-nutrients was very low in both schools according to analysis of nutritional indexes such as NARs and INQs. Students from both schools should improve intakes of micro-nutrients related to child growth such as calcium, Vitamin B6, zinc and folate. According to the analysis of dietary diversity, there was difference in dietary patterns by schools presumably due to their locations.
Conclusions
This suggests that current meals could not provide adequate nutrients for the subjects and urgent nutrition interventions for school food services are needed to improve their nutritional well-being. New foods supplements based on local cuisine are also needed to ensure dietary diversity and sustainable development plans.
7.Ultrasonographic ovarian mass scoring system for predicting malignancy in pregnant women with ovarian mass

During routine antenatal ultrasound examinations, an ovarian mass can be found incidentally. In clinical practice, the differential diagnosis between benign and malignant ovarian masses is essential for planning further management. Ultrasound imaging has become the most popular diagnostic tool during pregnancy, with the recent development of ultrasonography. In non-pregnant women, several methods have been used to predict malignant ovarian masses before surgery. The International Ovarian Tumor Analysis (IOTA) group reported several scoring systems, such as the IOTA simple rules, IOTA logistic regression models, and IOTA assessment of different NEoplasias in the adneXa. Other researchers have also evaluated the malignancy of ovarian masses before surgery using scoring systems such as the Sassone score, pelvic mass score, DePriest score, Lerner score, and Ovarian-Adnexal Reporting and Data System. These researchers suggested specific features of ovarian masses that can be used for differential diagnosis, including size, proportion of solid tissue, papillary projections, inner wall structure, locules, wall thickness, septa, echogenicity, acoustic shadows, and presence of ascites. Although these factors can also be measured in pregnant women using ultrasound, only a few studies have applied ovarian scoring systems in pregnant women. In this article, we reviewed various scoring systems for predicting malignant tumors of the ovary and determined whether they can be applied to pregnant women.
8.Modulation of lipid metabolism by mixtures of protamine and chitooligosaccharide through pancreatic lipase inhibitory activity in a rat model.

Overweight and obesity are usually related with high fat and calorie intake, and seriously causative of lifestyle-related diseases such as cardiovascular disorders, arteriosclerosis, and colon cancer. In this study, we propose a novel dietary therapy against overweight and obesity using mixtures of protamine and chitooligosaccharide (COS), which are known to interrupt the lipid metabolism in the body. Protamine is a dietary protein originated from salmon reproductive organ, and COS is an oligosaccharide made from chitin or chitosan by chemical or enzymatic hydrolysis. In the enzyme activity analysis in vitro, protamine and COS strongly suppressed the activity of pancreatic lipase, which is the primary enzyme for the digestion and absorption of lipids in the intestine. In in vivo animal test, the mixtures of protamine and COS significantly reduced the serum levels of triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (T-CHO), and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDLC) and inhibited the accumulation of lipids in liver tissue of Sprague Dawley (SD) rats fed high fat diets. On the other hand, they increased fecal TG and T-CHO contents. From these alterations in lipid metabolism, we verified that protamine and COS mixtures could effectively interrupt the digestion and absorption of dietary lipids in the body by inhibiting pancreatic lipase activity. In addition, protamine and COS mixtures increased the serum level of high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDLC), responsible for removing cholesterol from cells and protecting atherosclerosis, and therefore decreased the potential risks of cardiovascular diseases by lowering values of the atherogenic index (AI) and cardiac risk factor (CRF). Taken together, we suggest protamine and COS mixtures as a prominent dietary therapy for the prevention of overweight, obesity, and further cardiovascular diseases related with hyperlipidemia.

9.The Health Behavior and Status according to Household Income Level in Korean Women Aged 35 Years or Older: the 2013 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

BACKGROUND: Income is a major socioeconomic index, and low household income is known to negatively affect health. Nevertheless, there is a lack of research on the health status and health behavior of middle-aged and older women with low-income. This study aims to provide basic information on the health status and health behavior of low-income women, using data representative of South Koreans. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Among the total of 8,018 respondents, 2,713 women aged 35 years or older were enrolled in the study. The subjects were classified by income status based on standard household income quartiles. RESULTS: The low-income group showed the lowest education levels and the highest unemployment rate (P<0.001). The percentage of smokers was the highest, while the frequency of exercise was the lowest in this group (P<0.001). The incidence of hyperlipidemia was highest (P=0.028), and they showed the highest body mass index, waist circumference (P<0.001), blood pressure, fasting blood glucose (P=0.018), and triglyceride level (P=0.03), as well as the lowest high density lipoprotein level (P=0.039), and the highest risk of cardiovascular diseases (P=0.002). Additionally, perceived health status was negative and quality of life was lowest among the groups (P<0.001). Although the enrollment rate for free health check-up services was highest (P=0.007), subscription to private health insurance, adult health check-ups, cancer screening rate were all lowest of the groups. CONCLUSIONS: This study confirmed a health gap among middle-aged and elderly women of low income, compared to higher income groups.

10.Validation of the Korean Version of Liver Disease Quality of Life (LDQOL 1.0) Instrument.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Assessment of Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) outcomes in treatment of chronic disease is increasingly important. The objective of this study was to validate a Korean translation of the Liver Disease Quality of Life instrument (LDQOL version 1.0) for use in patients with chronic liver disease. METHODS: Two native Korean speakers with fluent English translated LDQOL including instructions, items, and response choices. This Korean translation of the LDQOL was administered to 121 patients with chronic liver disease. Cronbach's alpha coefficients were applied to test an internal consistency reliability of disease-specific scales of the LDQOL. MELD and modified CTP scores were calculated for all patients. Associations of MELD and modified CTP scores with severity of liver disease were analyzed with LDQOL. RESULTS: Internal consistency reliability was good (Cronbach's Alpha=0.69-0.94) in liver disease specific scales, except for the quality of social interaction scale (Cronbach's Alpha= 0.56). Mean modified CTP score and MELD score were 6.2+/-1.9 and 9.3+/-5.3, respectively. Both MELD score and modified CTP score showed correlations with most of the scores of liver disease specific scales of LDQOL 1.0, except for the quality of social interaction and sleep scale. CONCLUSIONS: The Korean version of the liver disease specific scales of the LDQOL 1.0 is validated and useful for measuring HRQOL in Korean patients with chronic liver disease.
