Purpose: This is a descriptive correlation study to confirm the effect of stress and anxiety caused by COVID-19 on the quality of life of small business owners in an area under environment of COVID-19. Methods: The participants were 150 small business owners in an area. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, an independent t-test, a one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression with the SPSS 25.0 Program. Results: The stress of small business owners averaged 3.67±0.65 out of 4 points, anxiety of COVID-19 was 2.65±0.52, and quality of life was 75.61±20.26 out of 130 points. The quality of life showed a significant negative correlation with ‘fear of infection’ (r=-.42, p<.001), ‘difficulties caused by social distancing’ (r=-.49, p<.001) in the stress subdomain, and anxiety (r=-.61, p<.001). On the other hand, stress, ‘fear of infection’ (r=.50, p<.001), ‘difficulties caused by social distancing’ (r=.60 p<.001), ‘anger against others’ (r=.35, p<.001) and anxiety showed positive correlation. Factors affecting the quality of life of the subjects were ‘fear of infection’ in the stress subdomain (β=-.23, p=.003), anxiety (β=-.45, p<.001), and residential area (J zone) (β=-.16, p=.030). These factors explained 47.0% of the variance. Conclusion In order to enhance the quality of life of small business owners in an area, it is required to reduce stress and anxiety. In addition, it is necessary to prepare an intervention program that can reduce stress and anxiety of small business owners.

OBJECTIVES: Seoul-Activities of Daily Living(S-ADL) was developed to assess elderly person's basic activities of daily living. This study aims to develop standardized ADL assessment scale and confirm the reliability and validity of the S-ADL. METHODS: It was participated in 336 controls and 145 patients diagnosed Alzheimer's disease. RESULTS: In controls, it was statistically significant to age, but not sex, education, region and presence of spouse. Also, reliability and validity were statistically significant. Principal axis factoring analysis revealed three factors that accounted for 66.67% of the total variance(1.self-care/hygiene, 2.ambulation, 3.toileting). According to each CDR stage, there were significant difference, except for CDR 0.5 and CDR 1 suggesting early dementia. Particularly, it was remarkable for functional impairment in CDR 2 and CDR 3 suggesting moderate to severe dementia. The order of the loss of function was (1) self-care/hygiene, (2) toileting, and (3) ambulation. CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed that the S-ADL could be a very reliable and valid tool for the assessment of functional disabilities of Korean dementia patients. Particularly, S-ADL would be useful in assessing daily function of moderate to severe AD.

PURPOSE: To investigate the changes in intraocular pressure (IOP) and associated systemic factors over 7 years in a healthy Korean population. METHODS: This longitudinal study included healthy subjects with no history of ocular disease and who had been receiving health examinations seven years apart at the Konkuk University Medical Center, Healthcare Center. The participants completed lifestyle questionnaires and underwent general health examinations (blood pressure, height and weight, and blood biochemical tests) and ocular examinations including noncontact tonometry and fundus photography. Subjects with abnormal fundus photography findings and ocular hypertension were excluded. Changes in IOP and systemic factors over 7 years were analyzed. RESULTS: Of 524 possible subjects, 469 were enrolled (55 subjects were excluded: 50 due to abnormal fundus photography and 5 for missing data). The left eye was analyzed in all patients. In all subjects, initial IOP (mean 14.50 ± 3.14 mmHg) was not significantly different from final IOP (14.72 ± 3.38 mmHg) (paired t-test, p = 0.074). In male patients, the final IOP was significantly higher than the initial IOP (paired t-test, p = 0.035). Lifestyle questionnaire variables were associated with a final IOP that was significantly higher than the initial IOP (smokers, alcohol drinkers and less exercisers, paired t-test; p = 0.014, 0.010 and 0.024, respectively). A linear mixed-effects model analysis showed that the change in IOP was negatively associated with age, but this was not statistically significant. Changes in systolic blood pressure (SBP), body mass index (BMI), total cholesterol (T.Chol) and low density lipoprotein (LDL) were positively correlated with change in IOP. CONCLUSIONS: A linear mixed-model analysis showed IOP decreased with age but this was not statistically significant. Changes in SBP, BMI, T.Chol and LDL were significantly positively correlated with change in IOP.

Nobiletin, a polymethoxylated flavonoid found in citrus, has been studied because of its modulatory functions in cellular signaling cascades, and effects to prevent mitochondrial calcium overload and neuronal cell death. Particularly, we previously reported that nobiletin induced changes in the mitochondrial membrane potential through K + channel regulation, suggesting that nobiletin might exert neuroprotective effects via regulating mitochondrial functions associated with the electron transport chain (ETC) system. This study investigated whether nobiletin regulated mitochondrial dysfunction mediated by ETC system downregulation by inhibiting complex I (CI) and complex III (CIII) in pure mitochondria and the cortical neurons of rats. The results showed that nobiletin significantly reduced mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, inhibited apoptotic signaling, enhanced ATP production and then restored neuronal viability under conditions of CI inhibition, but not CIII inhibition.These effects were attributed to the downregulation of translocation of apoptosis-induced factor (AIF), and the upregulation of CI activity and the expression of antioxidant enzymes such as Nrf2 and HO-1. Together with our previous study, these results indicate that the neuroprotective effects of nobiletin under mitochondrial dysfunction may be associated with its function to activate antioxidant signaling cascades. Our findings suggest the possibility that nobiletin has therapeutic potential in treating oxidative neurological and neurodegenerative diseases mediated by mitochondrial dysfunction.

This study explored the trends of Genomics & Informatics during the period of 2003-2018 in comparison with 11 other scholarly journals: BMC Bioinformatics, Algorithms for Molecular Biology: AMB, BMC Systems Biology, Journal of Computational Biology, Briefings in Bioinformatics, BMC Genomics, Nucleic Acids Research, American Journal of Human Genetics, Oncogenesis, Disease Markers, and Microarrays. In total, 22,423 research articles were reviewed. Content analysis was the main method employed in the current research. The results were interpreted using descriptive analysis, a clustering analysis, word embedding, and deep learning techniques. Trends are discussed for the 12 journals, both individually and collectively. This is an extension of our previous study (PMCID: PMC6808643).

Although some clinical trials have demonstrated reduced incidence of cardiovascular disease with the use of omega-3 fatty acids, others have found an increased risk of atrial fibrillation (AF). AF is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia worldwide. It is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates and significant public health burden. Previous studies of the effect of omega-3 fatty acids on AF occurrence have reported contradictory results. Here we reviewed the effect of omega-3 fatty acids on the risk of AF.

Despite the well-established benefits of statin treatments in lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), a significant residual risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) remains. Triglycerides (TGs) have long been recognized as potential residual risk factors in this context, but recent studies now disclose the substantial role of TG-rich lipoproteins (TRLs) and cholesterol components of metabolized TRLs (commonly referred to as remnant cholesterol) in atherogenesis, not just TGs alone. Evidence derived through diverse sources, including preclinical studies of pathogenic mechanisms, epidemiologic investigations, and genetic research, has consistently supported the considerable contribution of TRLs and remnant cholesterol in predicting occurrences of ASCVD. As emerging biomarkers for predicting atherosclerosis, they have thus become prioritized therapeutic targets, meant to augment LDL-C lowering efforts in individuals at high risk of ASCVD. However, routine clinical testing for remnant cholesterol and TRLs is still in question, necessitating further research into appropriate treatment plans if levels are elevated. New therapies targeting proteins in TG metabolic pathways, particularly angiopoietin-like protein 3 and apolipoprotein C-III, have shown potential advantages in patients with mild-to-moderate hypertriglyceridemia by reducing blood levels of TGs and remnant cholesterol. The aim of this review is to summarize existing evidence linking elevated TRLs and remnant cholesterol with development of ASCVD and to explore additional guidance for clinical therapy.

We have experienced a case of idiopathic erythrocytosis developed in a patient with end stage renal disease who had switched to CAPD from hemodialysis. Hemoglobin levels gradually increased from 8 to 19.0 mg/dl, resulting in various symptoms from hyperviscosity during the first 2 months after the initiation of CAPD. There were no other possible causes of secondary erythrocytosis, such as hypoxia, erythropoietin -producing tumor or acquired cyst. Serum level of IGF-1 was above the normal range in contrast with low serum levels in CAPD patients with anemia. Increased IGF-1 levels may possibly influence on the development of erythrocytosis in this case.

CCL5/regulated on activation, normal T expressed and secreted production (RANTES) is a principal CC chemokine, and can activate macrophages and Th1 lymphocytes, however, little is known about the CCL5 profiles associated with active tuberculosis (TB). In this study, we investigated the production of CCL5 by the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of patients with active pulmonary TB after stimulation with Triton X-100 soluble proteins (TSP) or the 30-kDa antigen. The profiles of cytokines/chemokines [CXCL8/interleukin (IL)-8, IL-12 p40, and interferon (IFN)-gamma] were also examined by PBMCs from TB patients, and compared with those obtained from healthy tuberculin reactors (HTR). Concordant with earlier studies, IFN-gamma production was significantly depressed in the PBMCs from TB patients compared with those from HTR. In addition, the CCL5, but not CXCL8, levels in the PBMCs from TB patients were significantly depressed after stimulation for 18 hr compared to those in the PBMCs from HTRs. The CCL5 release was not significantly correlated with the release of IFN-gamma in the cells from TB patients and HTRs. Further, inhibitor studies show that the 30-kDa- or TSP-induced CCL5 mRNA expression is sensitive to inhibitors of mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MEK) 1/2 and Janus kinase (JAK) 2, but not p38, pathway activation, suggesting a MEK1/2- or JAK2-based mechanism is responsible for modulating of the CCL5 expression in human PBMCs. Collectively, these data suggest that TB patients show depressed production of CCL5 secretion, which can be modulated by MEK- and JAK2-based transcriptional regulatory mechanisms, in response to the mycobacterial antigens.

Pulse oximetry is a noninvasive, continuous monitoring of arterial oxygenation and provides rapid detection of perioperative hypoxemia. However, many factors give a factitious reading of hemoglobin desaturation, some of these are vital dyes. Many authors report intravenous administration of vital dyes gave a transient factitious reading of hemoglobin desaturation, but few report peritumoral injection of vital dyes giving a spurious reading of hemoglobin desaturation. 1% Isosulfan blue dye has often been used for evaluation of the sentinel lymph node in breast cancer surgery. We report a case of spurious reading of a hemoglobin desaturation on a pulse oximetry following a peritumoral injection of 1% isosulfan blue dye in a patient with breast cancer.
