Adolescence is the period in which physical, mental and social maturation occurs and it is an important transit stage, changing from childhood to adulthood. This is a period in which important changes occur physically such as rapid growth in height and weight gain but significant differences in growth may occur for the same age. Therfore, the degree of sexual maturation may be an important indicator in evaluating growth in adolescence. Six thousand five hundred and eighty six male and female students from grade 4 to senior high from Seoul, district town and countryside were evaluated for sexual maturity using Tanner staging, weight, height and body mass index and compared for growth. There was a rapid growth in height of 6.7cm in boys between the ages of 11 and 14 years and 6.3 cm in height for girls between the ages of 10 and 12 years, showing earlier growth in height for girls. Growth in height according to sexual maturation showed the greatest growth during stages 2~3 for boys and girls. Boys grew an average of 18.94 cm and girls an average of 18.03 cm in height during the whole sexual maturation period. There was an increase of 5.5 kg in weight for boys during the same age as for growth in height, that is between 11 and 14 years of age. In girls, an average weight gain of 5.1 kg occurred between 11 and 13 years of age, slightly later than that of growth in height. Rapid gain in weight occurred during Tanner stages 2~3 for girls. Total gain of 20.70 kg for boys occurred during the whole sexual maturation period while girls gained total 19.73 kg. Body mass index increased gradually during the whole adolescent period. It was greater in boys during the ages of 9 and 12 years and greater in girls the age of 13 years and again in boys after 17 years of age. During the whole maturation period, boys gained 3.24 and girls, 4.05 of body mass index showing more gain in girls. Height, weight and body mass index showed normal variations during the sexual maturation index showed normal variations during the sexual maturation period and the results may bring an increased understanding that adolescent physical growth was closely related to sexual maturation.

The authors experienced a case of orbital granular cell myoblastoma in a 22 year old female, which is extreamely rare. The tumor mass had grown since 6 years ago in her right orbit. On ocular examination, the right eye was proptosed and displaced out and upward. Extraocular movements showed slight limitation of adduction of the right eye. The computed tomographic scanning revealed well defined hypervascular mass density in the right orbit. The mass was removed by modifiedkronlein approach and histopathologic examination revealed it to have features typical of granular cell myoblastoma.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of ambroxol on preventing the infantile respiratory distress syndrome (IRDS) in preterm birth at the Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Taegu Catholic Medical Center during the period from Jan. 1996 to Dec. 1996. Total of 68 cases were evaluated including 16 ambroxol group and 52 control group. The result were as follows : 1. In the comparison of preventing IRDS, there was 0 case of IRDS in ambroxol group and 7 cases of IRDS in control group (13.46 %). There was a significant difference between two groups (p<0.05). 2. The side effects of ambroxol after administration were nausea in 5 cases, headache in 3 cases, and chest discomfort in 4 cases, but these were not serious and self controlled. 3. There was no significant difference in neonatal morbidity between two groups (p > 0.05).

Congenital Hypothyroidism*

Arthroscopic synovectomy has some limitations for adequate posterior visualization, and it is difficult to establish the posterior portal because of potential damage to neurovascular structures. The purpose of this study is to introduce a newly designed arthroscopic technique passing through posterior septum and to review the arthroscopic synovectomy using transposterior septal portal in the knee. Routine arthroscopic examination of the knee joint is performed using standard anterolateral and anteromedial portals. Posterior arthroscopic technique is divided into four steps. The first step is to make a posteromedial portal. The second step is to make a posterolateral portal. The third step is to make a hole at the posterior septum and to examine the posterolateral compartment. The fourth step is to examine the posteromedial compartment by switching the arthroscope to the posterolateral portal in the same manner. This technique provides complete visualization of the posterior compartment of the knee joint including the posterior aspect of the medial and lateral femoral condyles, posterior horn of both menisci, the posterior cruciate ligament(PCL), the meniscofemoral ligament, posterior aspect of the popliteal tendon, and the posterior capsule. We reviewed 47 cases(of 43 patients) of arthroscopic synovectomy using anterolateral, anteromedial and transposterior septal portal. The results were assessed with follow up of at least 1 year using the criteria of pain, synovitis, effusion, and range of motion. In 15 case rheumatoid arthritis, we had good result in 14 cases, but 1 case of recurrence was noted at 2 months after surgery. Non specific synovitis, 11 cases, had the similar result of rheumatoid arthritis. In 9 cases with hemophilic arthritis, pain and effusion were improved, but range of motion was improved minimally. In 2 cases with gouty arthritis, 2 cases with tuberculous arthritis, and I case with pigmented villonodular synovitis(PVNS), range of motion was rather reduced. It is considered that arthroscopic technique using transposterior septal portal is safe procedure without damaging the PCL, posterior capsule, neurovascular structures, and very efficient method in removing hypertrophied synovium or debris of persistent synovitis or arthritis of the knee joint and helpful in removing encapsulated loose bodies located behind the PCL.

An association study with Korean alcoholic patients(n=50) and normal controls(n=53) was performed to find the relationship between catechol-O-methyltransferase(COMT) gene polymorphism and alcoholism using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. When we compared the allele and genotype frequencies of Nla III COMT gene polymorphism in alcoholism and normal controls, there was no significant difference between two groups. Our results do not support an association between the Nla III polymorphism of COMT gene and alcoholism.

As the population of senior people has been increased rapidly during the past 30 years in Koera, the health policy and related research in this field are strongly demanded to manage various problems which can be derived from the gerontic phenomenon. We estimated the death rates up to 2010 using the annual mortality data published by the National Statistical Office from 1970 to 1995 by time series analysis and calculated the survival curves, life expectancy by life table method with modified Graville's formular and proposed several measures which can be used in describing the theory of retangularization of survival curves and compression of mortality hypothesis. According to the results, the relative and absolute rectangularization and the convergency of survival curves were observed, and all the Keyfitz's H, NH, SD, and CV decreased while the life expectancy increased in the period of 1970 to 2010. So we conclude that the hypothesis of mortality compression suggested by Fries explains the changing pattern of aged population in Korea very well.
