Yeungnam University Journal of Medicine 1991;8(1):178-190
The authors performed experimental study to produce proliferative vitreoretinopathy by intravitreal injection of homologous fibroblasts in pigmented rabbits. Twenty four eyes of 12 rabbits were divided into control and experimental groups. In experimental group, the eyes were pretreated with expanding gas, perfluoropropane for the vitrectomy. In control group, no such procedure was preceded. In both groups, 5.0×10⁴, 1.0×10⁵ and 1.5×10⁵ cells of homologous fibroblasts were injected into the vitreous cavity. All the eyes were observed regularly with indirect ophthalmoscope followed by fundus photography. Those eyes were enucleated in 1, 2, 4 weeks for the light and electron microscopic studies. The development and severity of the proliferative vitreoretinopathy were correlated with the numbers of the injected fibroblast. This was more pronounced in the experimental group.

Extraskeletal Neoplasm Resembling Ewings Sarcoma was firstly reported with comprehensive review of 39 cases by L. Angervall and F.M. Enzinger in 1975. The tumors chiefly affected young adults and most commonly involved the soft tissue of lower extremity. Microscopically, they were consisted of solidly packed small, round or ovoid cells arranged in sheets or lobules, which were indistinguishable from those of the Ewings sarcoma of bone. The authors recently experienced a soft tissue sarcoma occurring in deltoid area of young male patient, which was diagnosed extraskeletal neoplasm resembling Ewings sarcoma. The case review is presented.

Korean Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases 2012;19(1):1-11
PURPOSE: Although influenza is regarded as one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in children with cancer, the actual vaccine coverage remains poor. We conducted evaluation of immunogenicity and safety of influenza vaccine in children with cancer. METHODS: In this study, 25 children with cancer who received influenza vaccine (SK influenza IX vaccine(R)) at the Korea Cancer Center Hospital between October and December 2009 were analyzed. Blood samples of patients were collected twice (at the beginning of this study and at 30th day after vaccination) and their antibody titers were measured using the hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) assay. Immunogenicity of the influenza vaccine was assessed by seroprotection rate on days 0 and 30, seroconversion rate on day 30, and mean fold increase (MFI) of geometric mean titer (GMT) of HI between days 0 and 30. RESULTS: Any of the subjects in our study did not experienced serious adverse events after influenza vaccination. Seroprotection rates were 68% for H1N1, 40% for H3N2, and 36% for B. Seroconversion rates were 12% for H1N1, 16% for H3N2, and 20% for B. MFIs were 0.9 for H1N1, 1.2 for H3N2, and 1.8 for B. CONCLUSION: In the study, we found a limited protective immune response to influenza vaccine, among subjects with cancer. However, some subjects showed seroconversion, and there were no severe adverse events among all subjects, supporting the recommendation of annual influenza vaccination in children with cancer.

9.The Role of Ultrasonography in Blunt Testicular Trauma.

Korean Journal of Urology 1996;37(11):1308-1312
The ultrasonographic features in 26 cases of blunt testicular trauma were reviewed. Ultrasonography diagnosed correctly in 11 surgically proven cases of testicular rupture. There were three false-positive cases, two with a large scrotal hematocele and one with epididymis rupture. there were no false-negative cases. The sensitivity and specificity of ultrasonographic diagnosis were 100% and 80% respectively. The positive and negative predictive values were 78. 6% and 100% respectively. Therefore, the negative diagnosis by ultrasonography can warrant conservative therapy.

10.Contralateral Occurrence after Unilateral Repair of Hydrocele in Children.

Korean Journal of Urology 1998;39(9):927-930
PURPOSE: Retrospective studies were carried out to clarify the incidence of contralateral occurrence after unilateral repair of hydrocele in children and the role of ultrasonography in preoperative recognition of asymptomatic hydrocele. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 452 patients of under 14 years old who underwent unilateral hydrocele repairs between January, 1990 and December, 1997 were reviewed. Patients with contralateral occurrence were defined as those who had previous unilateral hydrocele repairs and no clinical or historical evidence of contralateral hydrocele at the time of the initial repair Patients with simultaneous presence of bilateral hydrocele on their initial visit were excluded from this study. 36 patients who visited lately underwent ultrasonographic examination of both side of the groin and scrotum prior to surgery to identify asymptomatic contralateral hydrocele. RESULTS: The incidence of contralateral occurrence after unilateral hydrocele repairs was 5.4%(24 patients). When the left side was repaired initially, 13(7.4%) patients showed contralateral occurrence and when the right side was repaired initially, 11 (4.0%) patients showed contralateral occurrence. In the 36 patients who underwent ultrasonography, 2 patients(5.6%) had asymptomatic contralateral hydrocele and exploration revealed the presence of a patent processus vaginalis. On the other hand, 2 patients(5.6%) with negative ultrasonographic findings had contralateral repairs 1 month after clinically apparent hydrocele repair. CONCLUSIONS: Although the incidence was low, contralateral occurrence after unilateral repair of hydrocele in children was noted. Therefore, preoperative thorough history taking and physical examination in unilateral hydrocele patients should be performed. Also, in suspicious cases, inguinal or scrotal ultrasonography is helpful for the detection of the clinically occult contralateral hydrocele in children.
