PURPOSE: This study was to investigate the effects of problem solving group counseling on the index of obesity and health habits for obese children. METHOD: Forty seven obese children participated in the study(Exp.=22, Cont.=25). Children were recruited from the forth and fifth grade withhigher than 20% of the obesity degree. The problem solving counseling lasted for 10 weeks. In order to evaluate the effects of counseling, physical characteristics and health habits were measured three times; pretest, posttest, and at 10 weeks follow-up. The obtained data was analyzed by Chi-squared-test, t-test, and repeated measures ANOVA, using the SPSS WIN 10.0program. RESULT: Problem solving group counseling was effective on the physical characteristics(BMI, obesity degree, body fat ratio, waist measurement) and health habits over time. Children in the experimental group controlled their body weight better and reported lower scores in the index of obesity than children in the control group at 10 weeks follow-up. CONCLUSION: This counseling program helped obese children modify their health habits so that they could decrease their scores in the obesity index. It can be concluded that problem-solving counseling enhanced problem-solving abilities of obese children, which could help modify their ordinary health habits.

Although febrile convulsion (FC) is a common clinical entity with a high recurrence rate, no specific factors have been identified to be highly predictive of its recurrence. A total of 114 cases of FC identified during a 28 month period (January, 1989-May, 1991) was analysed. A slight predominance of boys over girls (1.3 to 1.0) was observed. the majority of cases (89.4%) were under 3 years of age and the most common age range for the onset of FC was 1~2 years. The most common form of FC was tonic type (54.0%), followed by tonic-clonic (32.5%), clonic (5.3%), and complex partial type (5.3%). Most FC episodes lasted less than 5 minutes (81.6%), and common clinical diagnosis underlying FC were as follows: pharyngotonsillitis (64.0%), bronchitis and/or pneumonia(16.7%), and gastroenteritis (9.7%). The family history for seizure disorder was present in 27.2% of the cases: FC in 21.1%, epiepsy in 4.4%, and both in 1.8%. Among 78 cases of the first FC, 43 cases were followed for 5 to 29 months without prophylactic anticonvulsant therapy. The overall recurrence rate of FC in this group was 67.4% and the highest incidence was observed in patients less than one year old (86.7%). A higher recurrence rate (80%) was observed in patients whose body temperature was lower than 39degrees C, as opposed to higher than 39degrees C (50%). It is concluded that the recurrence of FC is positively correlated with factors such as younger age (less than one year old), and lower body temperature at the time of onset of FC.

To analyzed the progression of white matter maturation and white matter pathology, MR imaging of the brain was obtained in 38 children with delayed development. Children with developmental delay showed a high incidence of MR abnormalities(34/38, 89.5%). Delayed pattern of myelination and gray-white matter differentiation was seen in 13 patients. Twenty-two patients had white matter patholgy, including 14 with white matter hypoplasia, seven with focal small infarction, five with periventricular leukomalacia, and three with high signal intensities on T2 weighted image. Associated structural abnormalities were also evaluated. The most common lesions in decreasing frequency were cerebral atrophy and dysgenesis of the corpus callosum, pachygyria and/or polymicrogyria, porencephalic cyst and Leigh's disease. Twenty-three of 34 children had multiple abnormalities on MRI. The MRI was useful in depicting the progression of myelination and other white matter lesions, and serial follow-up MR is recommended for patients with delayed or lack of myelination and gray-white matter differentiation.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of head nurse's emotional leadership on nurse's job satisfaction & organizational commitment. METHODS: The subjects of this study were 385 nurses from four general hospitals and one university hospital. SPSS WIN 14.0 was used for data analysis. RESULTS: Stepwise multiple regression analyses were used to examine the influences of research variables. The variable which predict nurse's job satisfaction were head nurse's emotional leadership (F=76.027, p<.01, adjusted R square=.166). The variables which predict organizational commitment were emotional leadership (F=27.839, p<.01, adjusted R square=.066), marital status (F=20.928, p<.01 adjusted R square=.03), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: As a result of this study, head nurse's emotional leadership was defined as a important influential on both job satisfaction and organizational commitment of nurses. Therefore, it is needed to develop education programs for activating head nurse's emotional leadership.

PURPOSE: This study was to confirm the influence of memory intensive training program on the elderly people's cognitive function, memory performance, and self-esteem. METHOD: Using a quasi-experimental or experimental design, 60 elderly aged over 60 years randomly assigned the experimental and control groups completed pretest-post evaluation. The experimental group participated in the memory intensive training program was offered to the participants in the experimental group for three weeks (2times/week). The t-test and chi2-test using SAS program. RESULTS: 1) The cognitive function was significantly higher in the experimental group compared to that in the control group (t=3.26, p=.002). 2) The memory performance that included immediate word recall tasks, word recognition tasks and delayed word recall tasks was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group (t=5.30, p<.001). The experimental group showed significantly higher scores for memory performance than the control group (t=5.30, p<.001). 3) The self-esteem was higher in the experimental group than in the control group, but there was no significant difference between the two groups (t=1.94, p=.058). CONCLUSION: The Memory Intensive Training Program could be an effective intervention for improving cognitive function, and memory performance of the elderly people.

PURPOSE: This study analyzed the difference in survival time of patients with delirium according to sedative medication. METHODS: From January 2012 through December 2013, a retrospective cohort study was performed using the electronic medical records (EMR) of Pusan National University Hospital. Among 900 patients who died from cancer, we selected 240 who suffered delirium based on the EMR. The Nu-DESC delirium screening test was used to diagnose delirium. RESULTS: The median length of delirium period was five days. Delirium characteristics were dominated by inappropriate behaviors (35.0%). Sedatives were administered in 72.1% of the cases. The most frequently used sedative was haloperidol which was used in 59.6% of cases. The delirium period significantly differed by patients' age (F=3.96, P=0.021), cancer type (F=3.31, P=0.010), chemotherapy (t=−3.44 P=0.001). The average survival time was 16.85 days for the sedative medication group and 9.37 days for the non-medication group, which, however, was not significant (t=1.766, P=0.079). CONCLUSION: In this study, the use of sedatives did not affect patients' survival time. Thus, appropriate sedative medication can be positively recommended to comfort terminal cancer patients and their families.

The purpose of this study was to provide fundamental data to propose further directions of education on rehabilitation nursing by investigating the adequacy of the educational contents of rehabilitation nursing. This study was a descriptive survey study. The data collected at 25 universities and 24 junior colleges through questionnaires to answer the research questions from August 10 to September 30, 2000. The questionnaire was consisted of 24 items. The contents of rehabilitation nursing education were developed by consulting with the rehabilitation nursing professionals. The results are as follows Rehabilitation nursing was taught as an independent class in 15 universities and 9 junior colleges. Most professors majoring in adult nursing(66.8%) were in charge of teaching the courses. For the adequacy of the teaching contents of rehabilitation nursing, conceptual bases for rehabilitation was the highest score(4.0), and interdisciplinary rehabilitation team, activities of daily living, clients of rehabilitation, nursing process in rehabilitation nursing, functional evaluation, movement and mobility, physical therapy, occupational therapy, sensation and perception, communication/language, eating and swallowing, bladder elimination, community based rehabilitation nursing, sleep, rest &, fatigue, bowel elimination., historical perspectives of rehabilitation nursing, sexuality, pulmonary rehabilitation, pain, cardiac rehabilitation, skin integrity, family care was ordered.

Varying types of polyps could occur in the vermiform appendix. However, it is very unusual. Collins found 57 cases (0.08%) of benign mucosal polyps in the 71,000 cases of appendectomy specimens. There has been no reported case of appendiceal polyp in the literature in Korea. The authors experienced two cases of polyp in the vermiform appendix. The first case was a 51 year-old male patient who received a left hemicolectomy due to colonic polyposis. The second case was a 71 year-old male patient who was treated by appendectomy under the clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis. The microscopic type of both cases were hyperplastic polyp.

OBJECT: This study examined the demographic characteristics, abused substance types, comorbid psychiatric diagnosis and associated crimes of substance-related offenders. METHOD: We surveyed 205 offenders of substance-related crime from court. RESULT: Substance-related offenders were all men and most of them were unemployed, living alone in the major city and mean age was 27.9+/-5.77years. 78.5% frequently abused inhalants like adhesives and 17.1% abused the methamphetamine. They violated the 1 or more times and the classification of crimes was violence, rape and rape-injury, larceny, arson. Substance-related offenders had comorbid psychiatric disorder ; 26 of them had personality disorder, 23 had mood disorder and 13 had psychotic disorder. Mean hospital day was 14.8+/-6.55 months. CONCLUSION: Substance-related offenders were young single men without a job living major city. They had comorbid psychiatric disorder and high risk to commit crime.

PURPOSE: The remarkable progress in information and communication technology has had a great effect on the healthcare delivery system. The development of smart phone applications is a new field. The aim of our research was to provide assistance in developing smart phone applications for community health nursing. METHODS: Based on an informative approach, this study developed persona and site maps, followed by a storyboard as a way of analyzing users' requirements and designing responses in the context of smart phone application development methodology. RESULTS: We developed persona, user interface and database design successfully, and then seven nurses selected four nursing problems (income, residence, pain, and digestion hydration). The search time in seconds for the 2005 English OMAHA guidelines to find three nursing interventions for these problems was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the smart phone application. The results showed that smart phone applications' search was 21 times faster on the average than book guidelines. CONCLUSION: An English version of the OMAHA system application was developed for the Android smart phone market. It is hoped that smart phone applications such as this will be used internationally for nursing education.
