OBJECTIVETo evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of unilateral pedicle screw fixation in treating thoracolumbar fractures through paraspinal approach.

METHODSFrom January 2006 to January 2009,21 patients with single level thoracolumbar fracture without neurological symptoms were treated with unilateral pedicle screw fixation through paraspinal approach. There were 14 males and 7 females,aged from 21 to 65 years old with a mean of 36.4 years. The duration from injury to operation ranged from 6 h to 5 d with an average of 3 d. According to the classification of Denis fracture, compression fractures happedned in 12 cases and burst fractures happened in 9 cases,including 1 case with T5 fracture, 2 cases with T7 fracture, 2 cases with T10 fracture, 3 cases with T11 fracture, 8 cases with T12 fracture, and 5 cases with L1 fracture. Based on the Flankel grade, all patients were classified as grade E. Anterior vertebral body height ratio, sagittal Cobb angle, condition of internal fixation failure, visual analogue score (VAS) were evaluated.

RESULTSAll patients were followed up from 12 to 36 months with an average of 20.5 months. No internal fixation failure was found. Anterior vertebral body height ratios at preoperative 3 days after operation and last follow-up were 54.3 +/- 2.8, 92.9 +/- 1.5, 93.8 +/- 1.7, respectively;sagittal Cobb angle at the three timepoints were (27.8 +/- 2.5) degrees, (5.3 +/- 0.8) degrees, (6.3 +/- 1.4) degrees, respectively; the difference was statistical significant (P < 0.05). VAS was (1.2 +/- 0.4) points at last follow-up and had obviously improved (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONTreatment of thoracolumbar fractures with unilateral pedicle screw fixation through paraspinal approach is safe with the advantages of micro-trauma and less blood loss,which can not only completely retain the posterior spinal complex structure, reinforce the spinal stability, raise the reductional quality, but also improve the strength of fixation and the distribution of stress force.

Sorption of carbon tetrachloride (CT) by zero-valent iron (ZVI) is the rate-limiting step in the degradation of CT, so the sorption capacity of ZVI is of great importance. This experiment was aimed at enhancing the sorption of CT by ZVI and the degradation rate of CT by modification of surfactants. This study showed that ZVI modified by cationic surfactants has favorable synergistic effect on the degradation of CT. The CT degradation rate of ZVI modified by cetyl pyridinium bromide (CPB) was higher than that of the unmodified ZVI by 130%, and the CT degradation rate of ZVI modified by cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) was higher than that of the unmodified ZVI by 81%. This study also showed that the best degradation effect is obtained at the near critical micelle concentrations (CMC) and that high loaded cationic surfactant does not have good synergistic effect on the degradation due to its hydrophilicity and the block in surface reduction sites. Furthermore degradation of CT by ZVI modified by nonionic surfactant has not positive effect on the degradation as the ionic surfactant and the ZVI modified by anionic surfactant has hardly any obvious effects on the degradation.

The aqueous phase oxidation of gaseous elemental mercury (Hg(0)) by potassium persulfate (KPS) catalyzed by Ag(+) was investigated using a glass bubble column reactor. Concentration of gaseous mercury and potassium persulfate were measured by cold vapor atom absorption (CVAA) and ion chromatograph (IC), respectively. The effects of pH value, concentration of potassium persulfate and silver nitrate (SN), temperature, Hg(0) concentration in the reactor inlet and tertiary butanol (TBA), free radical scavenger, on the removal efficiency of Hg(0) were studied. The results showed that the removal efficiency of Hg(0) increased with increasing concentration of potassium persulfate and silver nitrate, while temperature and TBA were negatively effective. Furthermore, the removal efficiency of Hg(0) was much better in neutral solution than in both acidic and alkaline solution. But the influence of pH was almost eliminated by adding AgNO(3). High Hg(0) concentration has positive effect. The possible reaction mechanism of gaseous mercury was also discussed.

OBJECTIVESThe investigation of the testicular volume, the penis length and the T, FSH, LH, PRL levels in serum were taken in 289 adolescent males to provide the valuable data for andrology.

METHODSThe adolescent males were grouped according to their age. The testicular volume was measured with testicular model and the T, FSH, LH, PRL levels in serum were determined by immunoenzymetric assay.

RESULTSThe male sexual development was rapid from age 11 to 16 and close to that of adult at age 18. Serum PRL of adolescent males was higher than that of adult males.

CONCLUSIONSThe age 11 to 16 is a period of rapid growth in sexual maturation. PRL may play an important role in sexual maturation.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the changes of expression of phosphorylation c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (p-JNK) during the skin burned wound healing in patients and discuss the molecular mechanism of burned wound healing. METHODS: The staining intensity and distribution of p-JNK were detected by immunohistochemistry and routine histology in burned skin samples of 12 patients and normal skin samples of 12 control subjects. RESULTS: In normal skin, the positive signals of p-JNK were mostly localized in basal layer cells of the epidermis, with a positive rate of (8.8+/-1.3)%. In the burned group, the positive signals of p-JNK were mainly localized in the epidermal cells and some inflammatory cells, with a significantly higher positive rate of (31.2+/-3.3)% than the normal group(P<0.01). CONCLUSION The changes of p-JNK expression after skin burned might correlate with wound healing.

UNLABELLED: OBJECTIVE To investigate the time-dependent expression of c-jun during the healing of incised wound in mice skin. METHODS: The expression of c-jun in different stages after the incised wound were detected by immunohistochemistry and Western blot. RESULTS: There was a low level expression of c-jun in normal mice skin. Expression of c-jun was mainly detected in neutrophils from 3 h to 12h after injury. The c-jun positive cells were almost mononuclear cells (MNCs) and fibroblasts between 1 d and 5 d after injury. The c-jun positive cells were mostly fibroblasts between 7 d and 14 d after injury. The ratio of the c-jun positive cells increased in the wound specimens from 3 h to 12 h, peaked at 12 h, declined partially from 1 d to 5 d, and reached the peak secondly at 7 d, then decreased from 10 d to 14 d. The expression of c-jun was observed throughout the wound healing stages by Western blot with two peaks occurring at 12 h and 7 d after injury. CONCLUSION The c-jun may play a potential role in inducing apoptosis of neutrophils, MNCs and fibroblasts during skin wound healing, and it may be used as the marker for wound age determination.

OBJECTIVE: To establish a new animal model of grading skeletal muscle contusions that could be controllable and repetitive. METHODS: The rats' gastrocnemius was injured by a new weight-dropping device designed. The force acting on gastrocnemius with a comparatively constant duration and inducing elastic deformation of the gastrocnemius was expressed with velocity (v) and deformation (DF). Instant velocity was changed to create gastrocnemius contusions. Pathological changes of gastrocnemius were graded by the gross and histological examinations of 39 rats. RESULTS: At low level of impact (v: 2 m/s, DF: 5.5 mm), mild injuries were detected in epimysium and superficial layer of gastrocnemius. At moderate level of impact (v: 2.5 m/s, DF: 6.5 mm), the injuries were observed in epimysium and whole gastrocnemius. At high level of impact (v: 3 m/s, DF: 7.5 mm), severe injuries were seen deeper to soleus with more extensive skeletal muscle damage. CONCLUSION Grading of skeletal muscle blunt force contusion is created by parameter of velocity and muscle deformation. The model could be used for further research on skeletal muscle contusions.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes of phospho-JNK (p-JNK) during the incised wound healing of the skin in mice and to explore the rule of the time-dependent change of p-JNK in wound age determination. METHODS: The changes of p-JNK expression in incised skin wound were detected by immunohistochemistry and Western blot. RESULTS: There was a minimal baseline staining of p-JNK in control mouse skin. Changes of p-JNK expression were mainly detectable in neutrophils in the wound specimens from 3 hours to 12 hours after injury. Afterwards, the p-JNK positive cells were mostly mononuclear cells and fibroblasts between post-injury day 1 and day 5, whereas the p-JNK positive cells were mostly fibroblasts between post-injury day 7 and day 14. Morphometrically, the ratio of the p-JNK positive cells to the total increased gradually in the wound specimens from 3 hours to day 1, and maximized at day 1 with a slight decrease from post-injury day 3 to day 5. The ratio showed a second peak in the specimens of day 7, and then decreased gradually from post-injury day 10 to day 14. The changes of p-JNK expression were observed throughout the wound healing stages by Western blot as well, with a peak expression occurring between 12 hour and day 3 after injury. CONCLUSION p-JNK may play a pivotal role in inducing apoptosis of neutrophils, mononuclear cells, and fibroblasts during skin wound healing and meanwhile, p-JNK may be a potentially useful marker for wound age determination.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expression of cannabinoid receptor I (CB1R) during mice skin incised wound healing course and time-dependent changes of CB1R in wound age determination. METHODS: The changes of CBIR expression in skin incised wound were detected by immunohistochemistry and Western blotting. RESULTS: The control group showed a low expression of CB1R detected mainly in epidermis, hair follicles, sebaceous gland and dermomuscular layer. CB1R expression was undetectable in neutrophils in the wound specimens from 6h to 12h post-injury. CB1R positive cells were mostly mononuclear cells (MNCs) and fibroblastic cells (FBCs) from 1 d to 5 d post-injury. CB1R positive cells were mostly FBCs from 7 d to 14d post-injury. The ratio of the CB1R positive cells increased gradually in the wound specimens from 6 h to 3 d post-injury, reached peak level at 5 d, and then decreased gradually from 7d to 14 d post-injury. The positive bands of CB1R were observed in all time points of the wound healing course by Western blotting. The expression peak showed at 5 d post-injury. CONCLUSION CB1R is activated during the wound healing course. The expression of CB1R is found in mononuclear cells, which could be involved in inflammation reaction. CBIR is observed in fibroblastic cells, which could participate in the wound healing. CB1R may be a potentially useful marker for determination of wound healing age.

Objective To explore the effect of glycine on serum levels of IL-1 and IL-6 in rats with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) induced by endotoxin and hypoxia. Methods Forty SD rats were randomly assigned into the glycine-treated group and the normal saline (NS) control group. In the glycine-treated group, glycine (1 g/kg) was injected intravenously and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of 2 mg/kg was administrated five minutes later. The control group rats were treated with the same volume of NS as a substitute for glycine. In both groups, 90 minutes after injection of LPS, FiO2 given was reduced from 21% to 5% and ventilation continued for 180 min or until the death of rats. At the end of the experiment, the blood samples and sections of the intestine were obtained immediately. Serum levels of IL-1 and IL-6 were measured using ELISA. The histopathological changes of the small intestine were studied. Results The survival time of the glycine-treated group was significantly longer than that of the control group [(159.25±22.78) min vs (138.75±19.05) min](P<0.01). The injury of the small intestine in the glycine-treated group was markedly alleviated (P<0.01). The levels of IL-1and IL-6 in the glycine-treated group were significantly lower than those in the control group [(149.1±76.1) ng/L vs (472.1±505.6) ng/L, (204.8±163.5) ng/L vs (585.8±574.5) ng/L, respectively] (P<0.01). Conclusions Glycine could reduce the levels of IL-1 and IL-6 and alleviate injuries of the intestine in rats with NEC induced by LPS and hypoxia.
