2. Effect of ketamine dissolved in multi-organ preservation solution on morphology of cold-stored rat kidneys
Academic Journal of Second Military Medical University 2010;30(9):1018-1021
Objective: To observe the morphological changes of cold-stored rat kidneys flushed with multi-organ preservation solution containing ketamine. Methods: The kidneys of male SD rats were retrogradely perfused with 0-4°C HC-A (50-100 ml) only or together with ketamine (10-5 μmol/L), and were then isolated, cold stored for 24, 48, and 72 h. The morphological changes of the kidneys in both groups were observed under light microscope and transmission electron microscope. Results: Light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy showed that there were evident morphological changes in the ketamine group after 72 h, with necrotic cells and organelles, and severe renal interstitial edema. The above changes in the HC-2 group were slighter. Conclusion: Ketamine in the organ preservation solution is harmful for the cold storage of rat kidneys.

AIM: To describe the prevalence and causes of low vision and blindness in a population within Sichuan province in southwestern China.METHODS: A stratified, multi-phased and cluster probability sampling design was employed to enumerate 125 641 participants from 40 351 households within 38 counties/cities. Participants underwent a comprehensive eye examination, including standardized visual acuity (VA) tests using logarithm of the minimum angle resolution charts. Prevalence was age- and gender-standardized to the 2000 China Census.RESULTS: Population-weighted prevalence of blindness was 0.77% (95% CI: 0.72- 0.82, n=966) and low vision was 1.22% (95% CI: 1.14-1.27, n=1 513). Overall, the prevalence of visual disability was 1.40% in the urban population, and 2.22% in the rural population (P<0.01). Cataract was the leading cause of visual disability (55.7%, n=1 381), and was of similar frequency in both urban and rural populations. Retinal disease was the second leading cause (9.7%, n=236), but was more common in urban than rural participants (34.3% vs 2.7%, P<0.01). Corneal disease accounted for 6.5% (n=161) of cases of visual disability, and was more common in the rural population (7.2% vs 3.9%, P=0.006). CONCLUSION: We estimate that 1.72 million people suffer from visual disability within Sichuan province, of which 525 000 are blind, the focus of blindness prevention should be in rural area.

International Eye Science 2015;(1):65-68
?Pathological myopia are often complicated by a series of pathological changes in fundus including foveoschisis, which can lead to visual dysfunction when processing with retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane and vitreoretinal traction diseases. According to the current knowledge, the main mechanism of foveoschisisi might be attributed to the impaired macular structure and function caused by a variety of traction on the retinal and retina poor condition. Surgical treatments have been reported to be effective in treating foveoschisis, however, the indications and surgical procedures are still controversial. ln this article, we reviewed the clinical features, diagnosis, treatment strategies and prognosis of pathological myopia foveoschisis.

OBJECTIVETo observe the changes in Aβ40, Aβ42 and ADDLs in brains of 3 month-old APPswe/PS1dE9 double transgenic mice after six-month intervention with curcumin, in order to discuss the neuroprotective effect of curcumin.
METHODAPPswe/PS1dE9dtg mice were randomly divided into the model group, the Rosiglitazone group (10 mg x kg(-1) x d(-1)) and curcumin high (400 mg x kg9-1) x d(-1)), medium (200 mg x kg(-1) x d(-1)) and low (100 mg x kg(-1) x d(-1)) dosage groups, with C57/BL6J mice of the same age and the same background in the normal control group. After 6 months, the immunohistochemical staining (IHC) and the Western blot method were used to observe the changes in positive cell of Aβ40, Aβ42 and ADDLs in hippocampal CA1 area, their distribution and protein expressions.
RESULTBoth of the immunohistochemical staining and the Western blot method showed more positive cell of Aβ40, Aβ42 and ADDLs in hippocampal CA1 area and higher protein expressions in the model group than the normal group (P < 0.01). IHC showed a lower result in the Rosiglitazone group than the model group (P < 0.05), while Western blot showed a much lower result (P < 0.01). The number of Aβ40, Aβ42 and ADDLs positive cells and the protein expressions decreased in the curcumin high group, the medium group showed a significant decrease (P < 0.01), and the low dose group also showed reductions in the protein expressions of Aβ40 and Aβ42.
CONCLUSIONThe six-month intervention with curcumin can significantly reduce the expressions of hippocampal Aβ40, Aβ42 and ADDLs in brains of APPswe/PS1dE9 double transgenic mice. Whether curcumin can impact Aβ cascade reaction by down-regulating expressions of Aβ40, Aβ42 and ADDLs and show the neuroprotective effect needs further studies.
