AIM: To research the correlation factor of the anterior segment values of eyes with different axial lengths.METHODS: In this study, 697 cases 697 eyes were included.According to axial length we divided all the cases into short axial length group, normal axial length group, mild long axial length group, moderate long axial length group and severe long axial length group. The relevant indicators of the anterior segment values of patients in the five groups was comparatively analyzed.RESULTS: In the short axial length group, the anterior chamber volume (ACV) showed a significantly negative correlation with age;anterior chamber depth (ACD) showed a significantly negative correlation with age.In the normal axial length group, the ACV showed a significantly negative correlation with age and a significantly positive correlation with axial length(AXL);the anterior chamber angle (ACA) showed a significantly negative correlation with age and a significantly positive correlation with AXL, and a significantly positive correlation with corneal curvature;the ACD showed a significantly negative correlation with age and a significantly positive correlation with AXL.In the mild long axial length group, the ACV showed a significantly negative correlation with age and a significantly positive correlation with AXL, and a significantly negative correlation with corneal curvature;the ACA showed a significantly negative correlation with age and a significantly positive correlation with AXL, and a significantly positive correlation with corneal curvature;the ACD showed a significantly negative correlation with age and a significantly positive correlation with AXL.In the moderate long axial length group, the ACV showed a significantly negative correlation with age;the ACA showed a significantly positive correlation with AXL;the ACD showed a significantly positive correlation with AXL.In the severe long axial length group, the ACV showed a significantly negative correlation with age. There were no significant differences on ACV, ACA and ACD among mild long axial length group, moderate long axial length group and severe long axial length group (P>0.05), while the difference between other groups was significant (P<0.05).CONCLUSION: There has a correlation between the anterior chamber values (ACV, ACA, ACD) age and AXL for eyes which AXL were 22-27mm, while the correlation would disappear as the AXL became shorter or longer. There was a significant growth trend of anterior chamber values for eyes with AXL <27mm.

AIM: To assess the impact of diabetes on corneal endothelial cells through the quantitative analysis of corneal endothelial cell morphology for patients with diabetics.
METHODS: The corneal thickness and endothelial cell morphology of 360 eyes of 299 cases were detected using full automatic corneal endothelial cell analyzer. The normal control group included 175 eyes of 148 cases, and there were 185 eyes of 151 cases for the patients with diabetes, 110 eyes of 92 cases for the non-proliferating phase group and 75 eyes of 59 cases for the proliferating phase group. The average density of central corneal endothelial cells, proportion of hexagonal cells, coefficient of variation and corneal thickness were compared among groups, and then the statistical analysis was conducted.
RESULTS: Compared with the cornea of the normal group, in the diabetes group, the coefficient of variation of corneal endothelial cells and central corneal thickness increased, while the average density of central corneal endothelial cells and proportion of hexagonal cells decreased, showing a significant difference (P<0. 05). Compared with the cornea of non-proliferating phase group, in the proliferating phase group, the density of central corneal endothelial cells decreased, the coefficient of variation of corneal endothelial cells increased, while the proportion of hexagonal cells decreased with a significant difference (P<0. 05), and the central corneal thickness increased, showing no significant difference(P>0. 05).
CONCLUSION: Compared with the cornea of normal control group, in the diabetes group, the corneal endothelial cells show abnormal morphology, which aggravates with the severity of lesions, especially for the significant changes in the coefficient of variation and the proportion of hexagonal cells. As a result, the corneal resistance to damage in patients with diabetes will decrease.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the effects of carbon monoxide releasing molecule-2 (CORM-2) on experimental periodontitis in rats.
METHODSForty-two Wistar rats were divided into three groups. Rats in the normal group (NL group) did not undergo any procedure, whereas the other rats were ligatured and treated with saline solution (NaCl 0.9%) (LO group) or treated with CORM-2 (10 mg kg(-1) per day) (CO group). A 3-0 silk suture was placed around the mandibular first molars. Rats were sacrificed after 3, 7, and 10 d. Blood samples were collected from all animals for tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) analysis. Changes in alveolar bone levels were measured clinically, and periodontal tissues were histopathologically examined to assess the infiltration of inflammatory cells.
RESULTSLigature placement increased alveolar bone loss and inflammatory cell infiltration in periodontal tissue. Alveolar bone loss in CO group was significantly higher than that in NL group, but was lower than that in LO group (P<0.05). The ratio of inflammatory cell infiltration in LO group was significantly higher than that in CO and NL groups, and that in CO group was lower than in LO group (P<0.05). Serum levels of TNF-alpha and IL-1beta in the LO group were significantly higher than those in the CO and NL groups, and those in CO group were lower than in LO group (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONSystemic administration of CORM-2 reduced periodontal inflammation and alveolar bone loss in experimental periodontitis in rats.

Objective: To set up an HPLC method for the simultaneous determination of p-hydroxybenzoic acid plus o-hydroxy-benzoic acid and p-hydroxybenzeneacetic acid in Senecio scandens Buch. Methods:The column was a Shiseido( Fine Chemicals) Cap-cell Pak C18 (250 mm × 4. 6 mm, 5 μm) column at the room temperature. The mobile phase was methanol-water-formic acid (13∶87∶0. 5) at a flow rate of 1. 0 ml·min-1 . The detection wavelength was 240nm. Results: p-Hydroxybenzoic acid plus o-hydroxybenzoic acid had a favorable linear relationship within the range of 0. 025-0. 400 mg·ml-1 , the regression equation was Y=5. 94 × 106 X+2.46×104(r=0.9998),theaveragerecoverywas97.59% andRSDwas1.22%. p-Hydroxybenzeneaceticacidhadafavorableline-ar relationship within the range 0.05-0.80 mg·ml-1, the regression equation was Y=4.09 ×106X+1.12 ×104(r=0.999 8), the average recovery was 98. 07% and RSD was 1. 90%. Conclusion:The method is simple, feasible and reproducible. It can be used in the quality control of p-hydroxybenzoic acid plus o-hydroxybenzoic acid and p-hydroxybenzeneacetic acid in Senecio scandens Buch.
