Objective To observe the clinical efficacy of point injection at Xialiao point (BL 34) for levator ani syndrome. Methods A hundred levator ani syndrome patients were randomly allocated to a treatment group and a control group, 50 cases each. The treatment group received point injection at Xialiao point (BL 34) and the control group was intervened by biofeedback therapy. The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), component scores of the MOS 36-item Short-From Health Survey (SF-36), anal resting and squeeze pressures were recorded in the two groups before and after the treatment. The therapeutic effects and therapy costs were compared between the two groups. Results The VAS, component scores of SF-36, anal resting and squeeze pressures were significantly changed after intervention in the two groups (P<0.05). After treatment, the VAS, a part of the SF-36 score [physiological function (PF), body pain (BP), vitality (VT) and social function (SF) scores], anal resting and squeeze pressures in the treatment group were significantly different from that in the control group (P<0.05). The total efficacy rate was 88.0% in the treatment group versus 80.0% in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). The therapy costs in the treatment group were (327.31±13.42) RMB and (408.45±21.56) RMB in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.01).Conclusions Point injection at Xialiao point (BL 34) is an effective method for levator ani syndrome.

AIM: To describe the prevalence and causes of low vision and blindness in a population within Sichuan province in southwestern China.METHODS: A stratified, multi-phased and cluster probability sampling design was employed to enumerate 125 641 participants from 40 351 households within 38 counties/cities. Participants underwent a comprehensive eye examination, including standardized visual acuity (VA) tests using logarithm of the minimum angle resolution charts. Prevalence was age- and gender-standardized to the 2000 China Census.RESULTS: Population-weighted prevalence of blindness was 0.77% (95% CI: 0.72- 0.82, n=966) and low vision was 1.22% (95% CI: 1.14-1.27, n=1 513). Overall, the prevalence of visual disability was 1.40% in the urban population, and 2.22% in the rural population (P<0.01). Cataract was the leading cause of visual disability (55.7%, n=1 381), and was of similar frequency in both urban and rural populations. Retinal disease was the second leading cause (9.7%, n=236), but was more common in urban than rural participants (34.3% vs 2.7%, P<0.01). Corneal disease accounted for 6.5% (n=161) of cases of visual disability, and was more common in the rural population (7.2% vs 3.9%, P=0.006). CONCLUSION: We estimate that 1.72 million people suffer from visual disability within Sichuan province, of which 525 000 are blind, the focus of blindness prevention should be in rural area.

Objective To investigate the expression and clinical significance of serum response factor (SRF) and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR2) in gastric carcinoma. Methods SABC immunohistochemical method was used to determine the expressions of SRF and VEGFR2 in 50 cases of gastric carcinoma, 50 cases of surgery incisal edges and 29 cases of lymph node metastasis focus. Results The detection positive rates of SRF and VEGFR2 in gastric carcinoma were 52.00 % (26/50) and 60.00 %(30/50), respectively, which were significantly higher than those in the normal gastric mucosa [16.00 % (8/50) and 10.00 % (5/50), respectively] (P< 0.05), with no statistical difference with metastiatic lymph node [65.52 % (19/29) and 72.41 % (21/29), respectively]. In the gastric carcinoma group, the expression of SRF was relevant with depth of invasion and lymph node metastasis (P<0.05). The expression of VEGFR2 was not related to age, gender and tumour size (P>0.05), but closely correlated to differentiation degree, invasion depth and lymph node metastasis (P<0.05). The expressions of SRF and VEGFR2 in the gastric carcinoma were positively correlated (r= 0.594, P< 0.05). Conclusion Overexpressions of SRF and VEGFR2 in gastric carcinoma can be regarded as the poorly prognostic markers and play an important role in invasion and metastasis of gastric carcinoma.

Objective: To investigate the potential role of me latonin in the adrenal cortex of human embryo. Methods:Specifi c melatonin receptors was localized and characterized in the adrenal cortex of h u man embryo by means of immunohistochemistry. Results: mt1 (Me l1a)and MT2 (Mel1b)subtype of melatonin receptors was principally localize d to cytoplasm in zona glomerulosa, fasciculata and reticularis. Conclu sion: It is possible that mt1 and MT2 subtype of melatonin receptors co-exist in the adrenal cortex of human embryo.

Objective To investigate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of ampicillin-sulbactam,clindamycin and cefoperazone a- gainst common clinical isolates. Methods MICs of these three antibiotics were determined by E test. Results Ampicillin-sulbae- tam showed inhibition rate of 100% for methicillin susceptible S.aureus (MSSA),E.faecalis,Group A Streptococcus,H. influenzae,penicillin-susceptible S.pneumoniae (PSSP),M.catarrhalis and anaerobes (including 10 strains of Bacteroid spp.,2 strains of P.aches,1 strain of E.lentum,1 strain of Fusobacterium innocuum, and 2 strains of Peptostreptococcus spp.).Ampicillin-sulbactam was active against 86.7% of extended-spectrum?-lactamase non-producing K.pneumoniae (NES- BL-KPN) and 53.3% of non ESBL-producing E.coli (NESBL-ECO).Ampicillin-sulbactam only inhibited 23.3% of A.bau- mannii isolates and 25.0% of E.faecium isolates. For MSSA,anaerobes,PSSP and group A Streptococcus, about 60.0%, 31.2%,30.0% and 10.0% of the isolates were susceptible to clindamycin, respectively. For MSSA,NESBL-ECO and NES- BL-KPN,96.7% to 100% of the isolates were susceptible to cefoperazone.About 40.0% of P.aeruginosa isolates were sus- ceptible to cefoperazone. No A.baumannii isolate was susceptible to cefoperazone. Conclusions The ampicillin-sulbactam has good antimicrobial activity against MSSA,E.faecalis,Group A Streptococcus,NESBL-KPN,H.influenzae,PSSP,M.ca- tarrhalis and anaerobes. In this study, clindamycin is active against 60% of MSSA isolates. Most of other species are relatively resistant to clindamycin.Cefoperazone shows good activity against MSSA,NESBL-ECO,and NESBL-KPN.These three anti- microbial agents can be used as empirical treatment for community-acquired infections.
