China Biotechnology 2006;0(03):-
Butyric acid can be used to produce cellulose butyrate fiber and ester derivatives, and to be applied in foodstuffs and perfume industries.Recent researches have found that butyric acid is a preferred carbon source for colonic epithelial cells, and can inhibit histone deacetylase, showing great anticancer potentials. With more and more functions of butyric acid being found and applied in bio-related fields, and with consumer's growing preference to bioproducts, biotechnological production of butyric acid will receive more competence than petroleum-based chemical synthesis.Low product concentration and poor selectivity are presently the main restricting factors.Workers have made considerable progress on more cheep carbon sources, optimization of fermentation process, simplifying downstream processing, and genetic engineering of producing strains.Any achievement on these aspects in the future can contribute to put fermentation of butyric acid into industry.

Objective To investigate the Lymphocyte-specific protein-tyrosine kinase(Lck)gene ex- pression in the renal tubule epithelial cells(TECs)of lupus nephritis, and the effect of interlenkin-2(IL-2) stimulation on its expression. Methods Proximal TECs derived from 6 weeks old spontaneous systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE)BXSB mice were exposed to IL-2(100 U/ml),the expression of Lck mRNA and protein was examined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR)and immunoblotting respectively. The difference of Lck gene expression before and after IL-2 stimulation was investigated. The expression of Lck protein in TECs of renal tissues of BXSB mice and human with lupus nephritis was observed through im- munohistochemistry. Results The expression of Lck mRNA and protein was very low in cultured TECs of 6 weeks old BXSB mice, but increased sharply after IL-2 stimulation(P

Pololike kinase 1(Plk1)contain an Nterminal Ser/Thr kinase catalytic domain and a Cterminal region that contains two poloboxes. As a key regulator of multiple steps during cell cycle across eukaryotic species, many proteins interact with Plk1.Plk1 is highly expressed in malignant cells and serves as a negative prognostic marker in specific human cancer types.Plk1 is a potential target for cancer therapy. Some novel smallmolecule inhibitors of pololike kinase 1 provide novel opportunities for cancerdrug discovery, such as BI 2536,ON01910.

In order to evaluate the characteristics of the spray drying of total flavonoids of Epimedium extracts assisted with soybean polysaccharide, a certain percentage of soybean polysaccharide or polyvidone were added to the total flavonoids of Epimedium extract to conduct the spray drying. The effect of soybean polysaccharides against the wall sticking effect of the spray drying was detected, as well as the powder property of total flavonoids of Epimedium spray drying powder and the dissolution in vitro behavior of the effective component. Compared with the total flavonoids of Epimedium spray drying powder, soybean polysaccharide revealed a significant anti-wall sticking effect. The spray drying power which had no notable change in the grain size made a increase in the fluidity, improvement in the moisture absorption and remarkable rise in the dissolution in vitro behavior. It was worth further studying the application of soybean polysaccharide in spray drying power of traditional Chinese medicine.

Objective To determine the effects of Tempol, one of the nitroxides, in the presence of ultraviolet-AI (UVA1, 340 nm -400 nm) on superoxide enzyme (SOD) activity, lipid peroxidation, and expression of collagen Ⅰ, collagen Ⅲ and matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-1, MMP-3 in human dermal fi broblasts in vitro. Methods Fibroblasts were irradiated by a single exposure to UVA1 and at the same time incubated with or without Tempol, and detected 24 h later. SOD activity and lipid peroxidation, as shown by accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA), were detected by biochemical assay. Expression of collagen Ⅰ, collagen Ⅲ (protein levels) and MMP-1, MMP-3 (mRNA level) was examined by ELISA and semi-quantitative RT-PCR, respectively. Results A dose of 15 J/cm2 UVA1 significantly inhibited SOD activity and collagen Ⅰ , collagen Ⅲ protein levels, increased MDA level and stimulated MMP-1, MMP-3 mRNA expression (P

Resveratrol, as a natural polyphenolic compound, has a wide range of beneficial effects, which includes anti-tumor, cardiovascular protection, anti-oxidant and estrogen-like effects, and so on. Its various physiological properties are closely related to the therapeutic principle for prevention and treatment of high altitude hypoxia injury. Resveratrol may play an important role in relieving or curing high altitude diseases, especially high altitude polycythemia(HAPC). However, the literature about study and application of resveratrol in plateau medicine field is rarely reported up to now. In this review, we summarized the physiological effects of resveratrol, discussed the possible main principle of resveratrol for HAPC therapy, and looked forward to resveratrol's perspective or potential application in high altitude medicine.

China Journal of Chinese Materia Medica 2006;31(3):228-231
OBJECTIVETo study the effects of Yifuning soft gelatin capsules (YFN) on pathology and biomechanical indexes of ovariectomied female rats.
METHODSixty female Sprague-Dawley rats without pregnancy and delivery were used,50 of them were ovariectomized and randomly divided into 5 groups: ovariectomy(OVX), OVX with diethylstilbestrol tables (DT), OVX with YFN (high dose, middle dose and low dose), the others were sham-operated group. The rats began to take the rats drugs in the fifth week after the operation. After 12 weeks of treat ment the rats were killed, and the bones were collected to inspect. The pathology of bone was observed with the HE stain and the area of trabecular was detected. The electronic testing device was used to detect the biomechanical properties.
RESULTThe results indicated that the rat model of postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO) was a success. Compared with the model group, after application of the drugs, the observation of HE showed different repairing around trabecular. The biomechanical parameters also increased significantly.
CONCLUSIONYFN can effectively prevent the loss of bone in OVX rats and strengthen bone quality, and has a good effect on PMO oostmenopausal osteoporosis.
