Objective To investigate the value of external counterpulsation and cervical traction therapy on patients with vertebral artery insufficiency syndrome. Methods Based on the criteria of clinical diagnosis, 90 patients with vertebral artery insufficiency syndrome were randomized into three groups. The group A was treated with external counterpulsation (30 cases), the group B with cervical traction (30 cases)and the group C with cervical traction plus external counterpulsation (30 cases). Results There was better therapeutic effects in group C as compared with groups A and B (P0.05). Conclusion External counterpulsation and traction therapy are effective in the treatment of the vertebral artery insufficiency syndrome.

Objective To investigate the clinical efficacy of body weight supported treadmill training (BWSTT) for the recovery of walking ability and comprehensive function after thoracolumbar spinal cord injury (SCI).Methods Sixty patients with SCIs in a thoracolumbar segment were assigned to a treatment group or a control group with 30 in each. Both groups received similar conventional rehabilitation training, but the patients in the treatment group were additionally treated with BWSTT (30 to 40 min, once daily,5 d/week,30 days for a course,a total 3 courses). The American Spinal Injury Association lower-extremity motor function assessment (ASIA),a functional comprehensive assessment (FCA),the walking ability assessment from the FCA (WA) and the modified Barthel index (MB1) were used in the assessment of the two groups before and after treatment. Results There were no significant differences in the two groups' average ASIA,FCA,WA or MBI results before treatment. After treatment ASIA,FCA,WA and MBI scores had all increased significantly in the treatment group compared with before treatment, and were significantly higher than in the control group. Conclusion As a supplement to conventional rehabilitation,BWSTT can improve walking ability and comprehensive function significantly after thoracolumbar spinal cord injury.

Objective To study the mechanism of high intensity ultrasound (HIU) on COX-2 mRNA expression and apoptosis in breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 cells. Methods Human breast cancer cells MDA-MB-231 in vitro were exposed in HIU (50 w/cm2).RT-PCR was performed to detect the level of COX-2 mRNA before and after exposure. The ultrastructural changes in apoptotic cells were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Results The relative level of COX-2 mRNA decreased gradually along with the increase of exposure time and apoptotic bodies in MDA-MB-231 cells considerably increased under electron microscope. When exposure time was increased to 30 seconds,a few cells died. Conclusion HIU promotes apoptosis of breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells in a COX-2 mRNA depended way.

Objective To measure the level of interleukin-15(IL-15) in serum and its expression in lung tissues, and analyze the correlations between IL-15 and IL-4,IFN-?,eosinophil(Eos),and explore the effect of IL-15 on bronchial asthma. Methods Thirty femal BALB/C mice were randomly divided into three group(n=10),group A(asthma model),group B(corticosteroid treatment) and group C(normal control). All mice were killed 24 h after final OVA challenge.Blood were obtained for measurement of serum IgE,IL-4,IFN-? and IL-15 levels by enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay(ELISA).Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid(BLAF) was collected for Eos count. The left lungs were isolated for pathological examination. The lung sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin(HE).The expressions of IL-15 in lung tissues were measured by immunohistochemical SP method. Results ①The mouse asthma model appeared ethological changes specific to asthma, the Eos count in BALF was increased, and IgE and IL-4 levels in serum were also increased compared with control group(P

OBJECTIVE To investigate whether it is essential to utilize prophylactic antibiotics in patients with gynecologic surgery type Ⅰincision.METHODS Antibiotics were applied prophylactically to 112 patients in the study group, while 101 cases in the control group were treated without antibiotics. The postoperative infection rate, the hemogram, the incision healing rate, the duration in hospital, hospital fees and so on were analyzed.RESULTS The postoperative infection rate, the incision healing rate and other items were compared in the two groups. No significant difference was found ststistically.CONCLUSIONS Prophylactic antibiotics are not necessery in patients with gynecologic operation type Ⅰ incision during perioperative periods.

Objective To observe the effect of serum containing Qingluo Tongbi Granula (QTG) on proliferation of fibroblast-like synoviocytes(FLS) and receptor activator of nuclear factor-?B ligand (RANKL) expression in FLS from patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Methods Synovial specimens obtained from the joint of patients were minced into small pieces for the culture of FLS.The morphological features of FLS subcultrued for 3~5 generations were observed under inverted microscope and electron microscope. The effect of QTG-containing serum on the proliferation of FLS was examined by MTT assay. The expression of RANKL in FLS was assessed by RT-PCR.Results After cocultured by serum containing large-dose QTG for 72 hours, proliferation of FLS and expression of RANKL were inhibited. Conclusion QTG can inhibit FLS proliferation, and reduce the expression of RANKL,which may be one of the therapeutic mechanisms of QTG for rheumatoid arthritis.

Mandibular buccal bifurcation cyst is a rare inflammatory odontogenic cyst. We reported two cases who complained of painful swelling of extraoral soft tissue. Intraoral examination revealed the partially erupted mandibular first molar. Cone beam computed tomography showed a well-defined cystic lesion surrounding the first molar. Histopathologic images showed the cyst wall was infiltrated by a large number of plasma cells, neutrophils and eosinophils, and lined with a thin layer of non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium. Finally, the two patients were diagnosed as mandibular buccal bifurcation cyst and treated with cyst enucleation and curettage.

Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2002;19(1):105-107
This study was aimed to determine the relationship between coronary artery disease(CAD) and insertion/deletion(I/D) polymorphism of the angiotensin coverting enzyme(ACE) gene. The ACE genotypes of 105 patients with CAD (50 of them were accompanied by essential hypertension (EH)) and 102 healthy people were detected by polymerase chain reaction. The results showed that in terms of ACE genotypes, no significant difference was noted between CAD group and control group, nor was it observed between CAD group and CAD accompanied by EH group, and nor was it seen between CAD/CAD accompanied by EH group and control group. These findings suggest that there is no relationship between the polymorphism of ACE gene and CAD (including those accompanied by EH).

Objective To investigate the effect of nursing intervention on birth process time, delivery and postpartum depression. Methods A total of 120 puerperae in our hospital were randomly divided into experimental group (n=60) and control group (n=60).The control group received routine nursing, and the experimental group received nursing intervention. The delivery duration time, delivery methods and anxiety and depression before and after nursing were compared between the two groups. Results The first stage of labor and the total labor time was (346.3±111.7) min and (397.2±146.3) min in the experimental group, which were significantly shorter than (489.6±133.1) min and (503.9±169.1) min in the control group, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.01);The rate of vaginal delivery was 78.33% in the experimental group, which was significantly higher than 53.33% in the control group(P<0.05).After nursing intervention, the SAS score and SDS score were (30.22±8.54) and (34.83±7.36) score in the experimental group, which were significantly lower than (37.61±8.61) and (49.61±9.42) score in the control group, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.01).Conclusion Nursing support can significantly shorten labor time, promote vaginal natural delivery and reduce postpartum anxiety and depression.
