OBJECTIVETo investigate the effects of Zhikepingon the oxyradical andintercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) of experimental early atherosclerosis.
METHODThe model of SD rat early atherosclerosis was induced by cholesterol diet. The suspension of Zhikeping and simvastatin were administered intragastrically, respectively. After 10 weeks, the serum lipids, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and maleic dialdehyde (MDA) were detected by automatic biochemistry analyzer. ICAM-1 and its expression of mRNA in aortic wall were detected- by immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR, respectively. Aortic histomorphology was cbserved by HE stainning.
RESULTThe results showed that the serum lipids, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and maleic dialdehyde (MDA) of treated groups were obviously improved as compared with those of the control group. The tissue pathological damage was improved indifferent degree, and ICAM-1 and its expression of mRNA was decreased obviously.
CONCLUSIONIt is suggested the mechanism of anti-atherosclerosis of Zhikeping have close relationship with the function of its anti-oxidizing and anti-adhesiveness that can protect aortic endothelial cell.

This study was aimed to reveal the species characteristics of Chinese patent medicines for antitussive ef-fect and provide references for developing new drugs. This research targeted Chinese patent medicines for antitussive effect which were included in the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China and the New National Chinese Patent Medicines as well as those characterized by keywords such as cough cure, cough alleviating, antitussive effect, cough, persistent cough. The analysis was made on the species characteristics, such as the number of Chinese patent medicines for antitussive effect, license number, ethnomedicine patent medicines, drugs for children use, protection of varieties of traditional Chinese medicine, the number of drugs, the generic names of drug, and drug forms. The results showed that 684 Chinese patent medicines for antitussive effect collected in this research had ac-counted for 8.60% of the total 7 260 of Chinese patent medicines. A total of 7 450 license numbers were approved, and 33% of the Chinese patent medicines shares one license number. One Chinese patent medicine owns 16.6 li-cense numbers on average. Ethnomedicine patent medicines had 3 Tibetan prescriptions such as the Shiwuwei Chenxiang pill and 4 Mongolian prescriptions, such as the Siwei Tumuxiang powder. Drugs for children accounted for 14%, including 9 forms. The type of the generic names of drug reached 16 and most of them originate from abbrevia-tions of the main drug in prescription. The number of drugs in prescription ranges from 8 to 16. Chinese patent medicines for antitussive effect involved 16 forms, of which the proportion of the use of solid preparation was higher than the liquid preparation. It was concluded that Chinese patent medicines for antitussive effect were characterized by such advantages such as a variety of species, various forms, the reasonable number of drugs, considerable medicine retail market share and drug for children use which can meet the clinical needs, and meanwhile some prob-lems, such as a lack of criteria for the generic names of drug, the homogenization of fierce competition, and inade-quacy of ethnomedicine patent medicines.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect of heat exposure during the second week of pregnancy on placental development and intrauterine growth of fetal rats.
METHODS24 pregnant rats were either exposed or not to a temperature of 35∓1 degrees celsius; during the second week of pregnancy. The body weight gain of the pregnant rats was measured regularly, and in late pregnancy, the pregnant rats were dissected and the number, weight, length, tail length, appearance of the offspring rats, number of live and still births, and the placental weight were recorded. The expressions of HSP70, Bax and Bcl-2 in the placenta were determined.
RESULTSCompared with the control group, the pregnant rats in heat exposure group had significantly lower body weight at the end of pregnancy and gestational weight gain, and the body weight, body length and tail length of the offspring rats were also significantly lower or smaller (P<0.05). The placental weight was comparable between the two groups. The placental expressions of HSP70,Bax,and Bcl-2 were significantly higher in the heat exposure group than in the control group (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONHeat exposure during the second trimester of pregnancy has adverse effects on placental development and intrauterine growth of the fetal rats by inducing heat shock response of placental tissue and apoptosis of the placental cells.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the safety and efficacy of minimally invasive achilles tendon lengthening and system rehabilitation for the treatment of contracture of achilles tendon.
METHODSFrom January 2002 to December 2010, 27 patients (31 feet) with contracture of achilles tendon were treated with minimally invasive achilles tendon lengthening and system rehabilitation. There were 11 males and 16 females with an average age of 35.5 years (ranged 3 to 65 years). Right foot was in 13 cases, left foot was in 10 cases, both feet were in 4 cases. Course of disease was from 1 to 5 years with an average of 2.3 years. The cause of contracture included postoperative complication of tibia fractures treated with intramedullary nailing in 7 feet, sequelae of lower leg compartment syndrome in 11 feet, congenital talipes equinovarus in 13 feet (both feet in 4). Before operation, all the patients walked with limping, plantar flexion anomaly was from 15 degrees to 50 degrees with an average of 35.5 degrees. The strength of quadriceps muscle of thigh was grade V in 27 feet, grade IV in 4 feet, the strength of musculus triceps surae was grade V in 24 feet, grade IV in 7 feet.
RESULTSAll the patients were followed-up for 6-24 months with an average of 11.3 months. According to standard of Arner-Lindholm to evaluate function of ankle joint, 29 feet obtained excellent results and 2 feet good. No infection, re-rupture or re-contracture was found.
CONCLUSIONMinimally invasive achilles tendon lengthening and system rehabilitation in treating contracture of achilles tendon has advantage such as simple operation, less complication, lower recurrence rate, which is favourable for thoroughly rehabilitation of patients. But, the case in which the strength of quadriceps muscle of thigh or musculus triceps surae still less than grade III after preoperative rehabilitation care should not choose the method.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the morphologic features, differential diagnosis, prognosis and histogenesis of papillary renal cell carcinoma (PRCC).
METHODSTumors composed of at least 50% papillae and > 1 cm in diameter were included in this study. Light microscopic observation, immunohistochemical assay of EMA, CK7, CD10, Vim, 34 beta E12 by tissue chip were performed.
RESULTSAmong 516 cases of renal epithelial tumors 33 cases of PRCC were detected. Grossly, hemorrhage, necrosis and multifocality were commonly seen. Besides typical papillae, inconspicuous papillary patterns, such as trabecular, tubular, micronodular and pseudostratified patterns could be seen. Foam cells and psammoma bodies in stroma, and hemosiderin in tumor cells were characteristic. Tumors were of two major types: basophilic type (n = 10), with small cuboid cell and pale cytoplasm (n = 10), 9 of them were low in Fuhrman grading; eosinophilic type (n = 22) with large columnar cells, rich in eosinophilic cytoplasm, 19 of them were high in Fuhrman grading. The remaining case was of clear cell type. The basophilic tumors were all positive for distal tubule marker EMA/CK7, none for proximal tubule marker CD10, 7 tumors positive for Vim. Eosinophilic tumors were positive for EMA/CK7 (9/22), CD10 (10/22) and Vim (6/22). All the tumors studied were negative for 34 beta E12. Follow-up data were available for 24 cases (mean 37 months) with 3-year survival rate of 64.3%, 5-year survival rate of 50%.
CONCLUSIONPRCC was a distinct malignant entity with unique pathological features. The prognosis of PRCC was worse than that of chromophobe renal cell carcinoma.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effects of Compound Salvia injection (CSI) on the number and activity of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs).
METHODMononuclear fraction of human umbilical cord blood was obtained by density gradient centrifugation and plated on fibronectin coated culture dishes. Cells were divided in to five groups: group control, group VEGF, group CSI 50, group CSI 10 and group CSI 2 (supplemented with none cytokine, VEGF 10 ng x mL(-1), CSI 50, 10, 2 microg x mL(-1), respectively). After six days in culture, cell clusters were viewed with an inverted microscope, fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) analysis of PE-CD34 and FITC-VE-Cadherin was performed to detect number of EPCs, adhesion assay was performed by replating cells on fibronectin coated dishes, and then counting adherent cells.
RESULTNumbers of EPCs of group VEGF, group CSI 10 and group CSI 2 were significantly increased as compared with those of group control ( P < 0.01, P < 0.05, P < 0.01, respectively), and numbers of EPCs of group CSI 2 were more than those of group CSI 10 and group V (P < 0.01). Compared with group control, number of EPCs of group CSI 50 was significantly decreased (P < 0.01). Compared with group control, numbers of clusters and adhesive EPCs of group CSI 10 and group CSI 2 were significantly increased, while those of group CSI 50 were significantly decreased.
CONCLUSIONLow concentration CSI can significantly promote EPCs augmentation and enhance its functional activity, while high concentration CSI significantly restrains it.

OBJECTIVETo compare the postoperative depths of the coagulation zones and pathological changes between bipolar transurethral resection of the prostate with plasmakinetic energy (PKRP) and monopolar transurethral prostatectomy (TURP) in canines.
METHODSTwenty-five male dogs were randomly divided into a PKRP group (n = 12), a TURP group (n = 12) and a sham-operation control group (n = 1). The dogs were sacrificed, their prostates harvested at 0 week (immediately after surgery), 1 week, 2 weeks and 8 weeks postoperatively and sectioned for pathologic analysis and measurement of the coagulation zones.
RESULTSAt 0, 1 and 2 weeks after the operation, the coagulation depths were (237.73 +/- 20.12) microm, (113.03 +/- 16.65) microm and (106.01 +/- 16.36) microm in the PKRP group, and (200.75 +/-19.34) microm, (129.46 +/- 17.81) microm and (116.04 +/- 25.67) microm in the TURP group (P < 0.01). At 8 weeks, the coagulation zones completely peeled off and the wounds were covered by regenerated urothelial in both of the groups. At 0, 1, 2 and 8 weeks, different inflammatory reactions were observed in the prostates of the PKRP and TURP groups, with some glandular lumens beneath the coagulation zones expanded and epithelia damaged. However, none of these phenomena occurred in the sham-operation control group.
CONCLUSIONPathologically, PKRP and TURP inflicted basically similar effects on the prostate of the canine. However, the coagulation zone was deeper intraoperatively and became thinner postoperatively with the former than with the latter, which suggests that PKRP causes less bleeding and less penetrative thermal damage than TURP.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the risk factors of the serious complications related with double-J ureteral stent placement following percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL).
METHODSClinical data were reviewed for 272 patients treated with PCNL and indwelling double-J stents between January, 2014 and April, 2016. The risk factors of serious complications were identified using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis.
RESULTSSerious complications of double-J ureteral stenting occurred in 63 patients (23.1%). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that the ureter abnormalities (β=1.735, P=0.000, OR=5.670), stent indwelling duration (β=1.206, P=0.028, OR=3.340), gender (β=0.895, P=0.016, OR=2.446), preoperative urinary tract infection (β=0.849, P=0.020 , OR=2.338) and stent size (β=0.847, P=0.011, OR=2.333) were all risk factors of serious complications related with the procedure.
CONCLUSIONMale patients are exposed to a higher risk of serious complications following PCNL. Effective management of urinary tract infection and choice of appropriate stent size in cases of ureteral abnormalities help to reduce these complications. The double-J stent should be withdrawn as soon as possible in patients with good postoperative recovery.

OBJECTIVETo describe the relative frequency, morphologic features, immunophenotype and clinical data of different types of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (B-NHL) and to evaluate the practical application of the 2001 World Health Organization (WHO) classification of lymphoid neoplasms.
METHODS369 documented cases of B-NHL were further subtyped according to the 2001 WHO classification of lymphoid neoplasms, on the basis of hematoxylin and eosin staining, immunohistochemistry and in-situ hybridization techniques.
RESULTSAmongst the 369 cases of B-NHL studied, 353 cases could be further classified into 11 subtypes. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, extranodal marginal zone lymphoma and follicular lymphoma were the commonest subtypes, accounting for 51.2% (189 cases), 14.9% (55 cases) and 10.6% (39 cases) of all cases respectively. Tumors in lymph nodes were seen in 158 cases (42.8%) and in extra node in 211 cases (57.2%). B-cell prolymphocytic leukemia and hairy cell leukemia were not identified. When comparing the diagnosis based on morphologic examination alone with the diagnosis based on both morphology and immunophenotype, there was a 80% concordance rate. Immunohistochemical study was helpful in reaching the correct diagnosis in many cases and could improve the overall diagnostic accuracy by about 20%.
CONCLUSIONSAmongst cases of B-NHL, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma is the commonest subtype, followed by MALToma and follicular lymphoma. While morphologic examination forms the basis for lymphoma diagnosis, immunohistochemical study also plays an important role in further subtyping. A combination of both modalities are sufficient for arriving at an accurate diagnosis in most cases of B-NHL, in keeping with the recommendation of the 2001 WHO classification of lymphoid neoplasms.
