Objective To explore Sex differences of total homocysteine(tHcy) levels, and relationship between serum creatinine and homocysteine, and renal regulation to homocysteine in patients with cerebrovascular diseases within normal serum creatinine concentrations. Methods The levels of fasting serum tHcy?Scr?triglyceride(TG)?total cholesterol(TCHO)?high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C)?high density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C)were determinedin groups of cerebral infarction(CI,278 males and 160 females),cerebral hemorrhage(CH,22 males and 16 females)and transient ischemic attacks(TIAs,27 males and 20 females). The situation that patients along with hypertension and diabetes mellitus were also investigated in three groups. Results Comparison in three groups:the tHcy concentrations were significantly higher in CI than in TIAs(P 0.05). Sex comparison(327 males,196 females, from CI,CH,TIAs):the tHcy concentration were significantly higher in males than females[P

AIM: Hydroxymethylglutaryl CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors, such as simvastatin, have been shown to reduce atherosclerotic cardiovascular morbidity and mortality by mechanisms unrelated to its lipid-lowering effect. Several studies have shown that simvastatin induces apoptosis in a varieties of cell lines including vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). The aim of this study was to investigate the signal pathways involved in apoptosis induced by simvastatin. METHODS: Cultured VSMC were treated with simvastatin. Calpain activity was determined by measuring Ca 2+ ionophore-specific calpain substrate (suc-LLVY-AMC), caspase-3 activation was detected by Western blot, and apoptotic changes were distinguished by annexin Ⅴ binding and DNA laddering. RESULTS: After incubated with 30 ?mol/L simvastatin for 8 h, calpain activity had a marked increase ( P

In this paper, the biological compatibilities of FGF/Collagen compound sponges are evaluated. Intracutaneous stimulation test and shortterm muscle embedding test of FGF/Collagen compound sponges made of different materials are performed. Experimental data are analyzed and evaluated according to the standard. The two sponges get marks of 0 in acute eye stimulation test and intracutaneous stimulation test, thus they are not stimulating to tissues. In shortterm muscle embedding test, they don't lead to inflammation reactions and can be degraded and absorbed in short term. FGF/Collagen compound sponge proves good biological compatibility and has a cheerful prospect in medicine.

Congenital cataract is a highly heterogeneous disorder at both the genetic and the clinical-phenotypic levels. A unique cataract was observed in a 4-generation Chinese family, which was characterized by autosomal dominant inheritance and late-onset. Mutations in the 13 known genes (CRYAA, CRYAB, CRYBB1, CRYBB2, CRYGC, CRYBA1/A3, CRYGD, Connexin50, Connexin46, intrinsic membrane protein LIM2, cytoskeletal protein BFSP2, the major intrinsic protein-MIP and the heat shock factor HSF4) have previously been demonstrated to be the frequent reason for isolated congenital cataracts, but the exact molecular basis and underlying mechanisms of congenital cataract still remain unclear. This study was designed to find whether these 13 genes developed any mutation in the family members and to identify the disease-causing gene. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and direct DNA sequence analysis were carried out to detect the 13 genes. The results showed that no mutation causing amino acid alternations was found in these potential candidate genes among all patients in the family, and only several single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified. A transitional mutation in the fourth intron of CRYBB2 and some silent mutations in the first exon of BFSP2 and CRYGD were found in the cataract family, but further study showed that these mutations could also be found in normal controls. It was concluded that some unidentified genes may underlie the occurrence of late-onset cataract in this family. A genome-wide screening will be carried out in the next study.

Since Peking University People's Hospital Research and Development Funds were founded as "Seed Funds" in 2006, its management concept has been developing. During the development, the policy-oriented service replaced the policy-based single service. The three-dimensional service system was formed. As the result, the scientific research outputs increased annually with good development condition.

OBJECTIVE: To introduce an operation of subscapularis slide from its origin and anterior release from its insertion for treatment of medial rotation contracture, subluxation and dislocation of the shoulder caused by obstetric brachial plexus palsy (OBPP). METHODS: Thirty-six cases with medial rotation contracture of the shoulder were diagnosed by measurement of the inferior glenohumeral angle, passive lateral rotation of the shoulder and plain radiographs. Subscapularis slide was performed in 24 cases with simple medial rotation contracture, and anterior release in 12 cases with complex contracture-medial rotation contracture combined with subluxation, dislocation, or other deformities of the shoulder joint. Systems of Mallet scoring and Gilbert grading for the shoulder were used to evaluate the postoperative shoulder function. RESULTS: With follow up for a minimum of six months, 32 cases got apparent gains from operations, accounting for 88.8% of the total operated on. The younger the child was, the better the result. Of 4 cases with no operative effects, 3 had no flexion of the elbow preoperatively, suggesting a poor recovery of the upper trunk of the brachial plexus; the rest one had no repair of the severed subscapularis tendon. CONCLUSIONS: Subscapularis slide and anterior release of the shoulder are effective for treatment of medial rotation contracture as well as its consequence of subluxation and dislocation of the shoulder in OBPP. The operative effect is related to children's age and the recovery extent of the upper trunk of the brachial plexus.

Objective To investigate the effects of low frequency ultrasound (LFU) on the proliferation and apoptosis of smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in rabbits with carotid atherosclerosis(CA).Methods CA models were established in 30 New Zealand rabbits using a high fat diet and air-drying.They were randomly divided into a control group and four LFU groups:group A received 0.5 W/cm~2 LFU for 5 min/d,group B 0.5 W/cm~2 for 10 min/d, group C 1 W/cm~2,5 min/d,and group D 1 W/cm~2,10 min/d.The rabbits' carotid arteries were autopsied after 20 d of the LFU treatment. The expression of PCNA and TUNEL staining were used to explore the proliferation and apopto- sis of SMCs,and the proliferation rates (PRs) and apoptosis rates (ARs) were calculated. Results Compared with the control group, the PRs in groups B,C and D were significantly lower, while the ARs in groups B,C and D were significantly higher. There was no significant difference in ARs or PRs among groups B,C and D.Con- clusion LFU can induce SMC apoptosis and inhibit SMC proliferation in rabbits with CA.
