Objectives To isolate the cardiogenic fraction, which can enhance cardiogenic differentiation of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells(MSC)from Geum iaponicum. The therapeutic effeet of the isolated cardiogenic fraction was further tested in a rat myocardial infaretion (MI)model.Method Bioassay guided fractionation method was used for the isolation of the cardiogenic fraction, named as heart repair fraction(HRF).MI was induced by a permanent ligation of left anterior descending coronary artery. The rats exhibiting similarly decreased values of left ventricle ejection fraction(LVEF) and fraction shortening(LVFS)were used. The rats in test group(n=10)were subject to HRF treatment(20 mg·kg-1·d-1)through gastric gavage daily for 4 weeks.Water alone(2 ml/d) was given through gastric gavage to rats in the control group(n=10).The cardiac function was assessed by echocardiography at different time points.Masson trichrome staining was used for evaluation of the infarct size.Morphological and immunohistochemical studies were performed to investigate the HRF mediated myocardial regeneration. Results LVEF(66.2%±6.9%)and LVFS(46.8%±5.8%)were significantly increased two weeks post HRF treatment compared with the values(LVEF:55.7%±6.0%and LVES:36.4%±5.2%)in control rats(a11 P<0.01).The improved heart function was further restored 4 weeks post HRF treatment(P<0.01).Furthermore,the treatment of acute MI with this HRF significantly reduced the infarct size(19.0%±6.1%)compared with that(31.1%±8.6%)in control rats(P<0.01).Substantial regeneration of cardiomyoeytes in infarcted region of the HRF treated heart was also observed that replaced a considerable part of the infarcted heart tissues resulting in remarkable reduction of the infarct size. Conclusion The properties of this HRF isolated from Geum japonicum in stimulating substantial regeneration of myocardium in infarct region with consequently improved cardiac function appear to be new and represent a new approach for the treatment of MI.

Journal of Clinical Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery 2015;29(3):230-234
OBJECTIVE:
To investigate the recurrence rate of nasal inverted papilloma treating by endoscopic and non-endoscopic approach.
METHOD:
A search on Pubmed, Medline, Springer and Elsevier databases was done to collect the reports (2001-2013) concerning different surgery treating nasal inverted papillomas, and meta-analysis was performed with RevMan 5.0 software.
RESULT:
Twelve papers (2001-2013) concerning the different surgery approach treating nasal inverted papillomas were retrieved. The heterogeneity test indicated that the 12 studies were consistent statistically (Q = 14.64, df = 11, P = 0.20), the data from these 12 studies could be analyzed by fixed effect model. After combination of these data, those of 1012 subjects accepted endoscopic surgical intervention and 359 subjects treating by non-endoscopic surgical intervention were collected. Test of overall effect by fixed effect model showed that the recurrence rate of inverted papilloma was significantly lower in endoscopic group than in non-endoscopic group (OR = 0.49, 95% CI was 0.35-0.69, P < 0.01). Funnel plot implied that publication bias was not obvious.
CONCLUSION
The recurrence rate of inverted papilloma was significantly lower in endoscopic group than in non-endoscopic group.

Objective To investigate the feasibility and efficacy of laparoscopic orchiopexy for inguinal palpable undescended testes. Methods Ninety patients with 103 inguinal undescended pal-pable testes were treated by laparoscopic orchiopexy performed by the same surgeon. There were 24 (26.7 %) left and 53 (58. 9%) right palpable cryptorchidism cases, plus 13 cases (14.4 % ) with bilat-eral undescended testes. The mean age of the patients was 17 months (range 8 months-6 years). The surgical procedures were described as following. First, the peritoneum was opened at the anterior sur-face of the spermatic vessels and vas deferens before the testis was pulled into the abdominal cavity so that the spermatic vessels and vas deferens were released and easily manipulated. Second, the inter-space between internal spermatic fascia (transversalic fascia) and processus vaginalis was divided so, that the testis could be pulled into the abdominal cavity. Finally, the trocar which was inserted from scrotum was placed through the outer ring. Finally, the testis was placed at position and fixed. Re-suits The mean operative time was 32.7±5.2 min. The processus vaginalis unclose was found in 93 (90.3%) cases; and contralateral process us vaginalis unclose were found in 12 (15.6%) cases of 77 unilateral undescended testes. The complication rate was 3(3.3%)cases, all in bilateral cases. All 103 testes were descended by laparoscopy. On follow-up ranging 6-12 months, all testes maintained good size and a proper position. Conclusions The laparoscopic approach may be a safe way to descend the inguinal palpable testes. Orchiopexy of palpable undescended testes can be done with advantages in the laparoscopic approach.

Objective To observe changes in the working memory and brain functional imaging on functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI) after 36 hours sleep deprivation (SD) in healthy volunteers and to explore the possible mechanism of the changes. Methods FMRI scannings were performed in ten male healthy young volunteers before and after 36 hours SD and results were analyzed using SPM2 software.Subjects were also tested LTR and PLUS task to measure the persistence and operation of working memory before and after 36 hours SD.Results The reaction time of LTR task after 36 hours SD ( (866 ± 102) ms)was significantly longer than that before SD ( (754 ± 91 ) ms, t = 2.59, P < 0.01 ).The reaction time of PLUS task after SD ( (848 ± 94) ms) was significantly longer ( t = 2.37, P < 0.05 ) than that before SD ( (756 ± 79) ms).The error rate of LTR task after SD (95.3% ± 3.56% ) was significantly higher (t=3.52,P < 0.01 ) than that before SD (84.8% ± 8.71% ).The error rate of PLUS task after SD (95.7% ±4.72% ) was significantly higher (t =3.38 ,P <0.01 ) than that before SD (84.2% ±9.66% ).There were no significant differences between the two tasks. The frontal and parietal lobes, anterior cingulate gyrus and thalamus were activated during memory tasks testing before SD.Brain activation was broader and stronger in PLUS task than in LTR task. After SD, activation in parietal lobe was decreased and activation in prefrontal and thalamus was increased significantly. Conclusions The working memory performance decreased after SD.Both LTR and PLUS tasks of working memory activate frontal and parietal lobes, anterior cingulate gyrus and thalamus. The activation of parietal lobe decreased and the activation of prefrontal lobe and thalamus increased after 36 hours SD.This is the possible mechanism of SD to causes the cognition decline.

Objective To investigate the risk factors in association with congenital syphilis, in order to provide a basis for further improvement of the ongoing Prevention of Mother to Child Syphilis Transmis- sion Project in Shenzhen. Methods A nested case-control study was designed in neonates with risk of con- genital syphilis. The case group included 51 neonates with congenital syphilis, and the control group included 320 neonates without the disease. Results The risk factors in association with congenital syphilis were mother's age, residence, education level, weeks of gestation at time of starting standardized treatment,moth- er's TRUST titer at time of diagnosis; and also father's education level, occupation and history of multiple sex partners, as showed with univariate logistic regression analysis. After adjusted with multivariate uncondi- tional logistic regression analysis, 4 independent risk factors were found, namely, mother's age, father's edu- cation level, weeks of gestation at time of starting standardized treatment, and mother's TRUST titer at time of diagnosis. Conclusions Risk factors in association with congenital syphilis are identified, which provide important clues for effective prevention of congenital syphilis.
