OBJECTIVETo compare the efficacy on vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI) between auricular acupuncture therapy and oral administration of medicine.
METHODSSixty patients of VBI were randomized into an auricular acupuncture therapy group and a medicine group, 30 cases in each one. In the auricular acupuncture group, acupuncture was applied bilaterally to gan (CO12) and jiejie (HX8) on the ears and needles were retained for 15 min. After needle withdrawal, the vaccariae semen were fixed with plaster at naogan (AT3, 4i), zhen (AT3), jing (AH12), shen (CO10) and pi (CO13) on the ears. In the medicine group, flunarizine hydrochloride capsules (Sibelium), 5mg were prescribed for oral administration, once every night. The treatment lasted continuously for 2 weeks (14 days) in the two groups. In 2 weeks, the clinical efficacy was assessed and the transcranial doppler (TCD) examination was performed.
RESULTSAfter treatment, the symptom scores were all apparently reduced in the patients of the two groups (P < 0.01, P < 0.05). Compared with the medicine group, the reduced score was much more obvious in the auricular acupuncture group (P < 0.05), indicating the significant difference. After treatment, with TCD examination, the blood velocity was increased to different degrees in the patients of low velocity type in the auricular acupuncture group and the medicine group; that was reduced to different degrees in the patients of high velocity type in the auricular acupuncture group and the medicine group. All of them were different significantly as compared with those before treatment (all P < 0.05). But the difference was not significant between the two groups (both P > 0.05). In comparison of clinical efficacy between the two groups, the effective rate was 93.3% (28/30) in the acupuncture group and better than 76.7% (23/30) in the medicine group, indicating the significant difference in comparison (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONThe auricular acupuncture therapy achieves the definite efficacy on VBI and the efficacy is better than flunarizine hydrochloride capsules.

Schmallenberg virus (SBV), a novel orthobunyavirus, was first isolated in 2011. SBV preferentially infects the central nervous system of cattle and sheep and causes fever, diarrhea, a drop in milk yields, congenital malformations and stillbirths. Until June 2014, more than 200 scientific publications regarding SBV have been published. Although more than 20 articles on SVB were published in China, most of these articles provided only a brief introduction of the disease without fully discussing the associated disease characteristics. As a new disease, it has been made a focus of the National Research Center for Exotic Animal Diseases at the China Animal Health and Epidemiology Center. In this review, in order to provide a reference for research into SBV in China, we have reviewed the state of current research progress on the etiology, diagnosis and epidemiology of SBV, and vaccine development.

Chinese Journal of Neuromedicine 2011;10(7):683-687
Objective To investigate the concentration of β-amyloid peptide 42 (Aβ42) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and its first clinical event-clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), and explore its associations with duration, disability severity and total T2-hyperintense lesion numbers in MRI. Methods Thirty-three patients with MS, 23 patients with CIS and 13 controls were investigated in this study. The disability severity of patients with MS and CIS in attack period was assessed by Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS). MRI scanning of brain, spinal cord or optic nerve was performed. And Aβ42 concentration in CSF was assessed by liquid chip assay. Results No significant differences of Aβ42 concentrations in CSF from patients with MS and CIS in attack period were noted as compared with those from controls ([104.78±13.73]pg/mL, [134.13±25.06] pg/mL vs. [137.02±23.35]pg/mL, P>0.05). ButAβ42 concentration in CSF from patients with secondary progressive MS (SPMS, [167.99±36.39]pg/mL) was significantly higher than that from patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS, [92.74±13.64] pg/mL, P=0.042). No correlations of Aβ42 concentration in CSF with the duration of MS and CIS and scores of EDSS were noted in patients with MS and CIS (P> 0.05). The concentration of Aβ42 in CSF from patients with MS with a duration for more than one year lower than the ones with a duration for less than one year, but the difference was not significant (P>0.05). Total T2-hyperintense lesion numbers in MRI of patients with MS and CIS were positively correlated with Aβ42 concentration in CSF (MS patients: r=0.507, P=0.038; CIS patients:r=0.485,P=0.049). Aβ42 concentration in CSF from patients with MS with total T2-hyperintense lesions ≥4 (129.34±19.96) was significantly higher than that from the ones with total T2-hyperintense lesions <4 (73.51±12.60, P=0.049). Conclusion Axonal damage in patients with SPMS is more severe than that in patients with RRMS.Increased CSF Aβ42-level in patients with MS is a feature of disease progression. There is a possible relation between T2-hyperintense lesion load and axonal damage in patients with MS.

Chinese Journal of Oncology 2010;32(12):907-912
OBJECTIVETo investigate the evolution pattern of the Runx3 gene 5'-CpG island ~3478 bp region methylation in human salivary gland adenoid cystic carcinoma (SGACC).
METHODSQuantitative MSP method was used to detect the methylation status of CpG island in various regions (No.1-10) of Runx3 promoter region, and Western blot was used for detection of the expression of Runx3 protein in 41 salivary gland SGACC samples and corresponding non-neoplastic salivary gland tissues. A Logistic model was used to analyze the risk ratio between the methylation status of CpG island in Runx3 gene and development of salivary SGACC, meanwhile, the possible association among the methylation of Runx3 gene, the clinicopathological parameters of SGACCs, and Runx3 protein expression was compared.
RESULTSThe results of qMSP showed that the hypermethylation initially occurred at the most 5' region of the Runx3 CpG island and spread to the transcription start site. The methylation rate was highest in region No. 1 and No. 2 among the successive ten regions ranging from the 5' region to the transcription start site within the Runx3 CpG island, and lowest in the transcription start site both in SGACCs and normal salivary glands. Furthermore, there was no methylation in the transcription start site in nomal salivary glands tissues. Together with the results of Logistic model analysis, those results indicate that the transcription start site within the Runx3 promoter CpG island is critical for gene silencing. Western blot results revealed that the Runx3 protein level in SGACC was significantly lower than that in normal salivary glands (P < 0.01). In combination of the results of qMSP, it is presumed that the Runx3 gene methylation is one of the reason inducing the down-regulation of Runx3 in SGACCs.
CONCLUSIONSMethylation of the Runx3 CpG island spreads from the most 5'-region to the transcription start site in human salivary gland adenoid cystic carcinoma, and the transcription start site may be a critical region for the methylation of Runx3. The evolution pattern of Runx3 gene methylation is related to the tumorigenesis of SGACCs.

This study aimed to establish a method for the detection and identification of H7N9 avian influenza viruses based on the NA gene by pyrosequencing. According to the published NA gene sequences of the avian influenza A (H7N9) virus, a 15-nt deletion was found in the NA gene of H7N9 avian influenza viruses. The 15-nt deletion of the NA gene was targeted as the molecular marker for the rapid detection and identification of H7N9 avian influenza viruses by pyrosequencing. Three H7N9 avian influenza virus isolates underwent pyrosequencing using the same assay, and were proven to have the same 15-nt deletion. Pyrosequencing technology based on the NA gene molecular marker can be used to identify H7N9 avian influenza viruses.
