1. Optic magnetic resonance imaging findings in 41 patients with neuromyelitis optica
Academic Journal of Second Military Medical University 2010;30(8):921-925
Objective: To investigate the optic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in patients with neuromyelitis optica (NMO). Methods: Patients with suspected NMO underwent brain, spinal cord and the optic MRI scanning and imaging analysis; 41 patients who met the latest diagnosis criteria of NMO were enrolled in the present study and were the followed up. The MRI characteristics of the optic nerves at different stages were analyzed, and 32 healthy volunteers served as control. The results of visual evoked potential (VEP) were analyzed retrospectively to investigate whether there was difference between the positive rate of VEP and MRI findings. Results: MRI imaging showed that the shape of bilateral optic nerves was straight in healthy volunteers, and just a moiety of the optic showed slightly higher signal. In NMO patients, signals of the optic at unilateral or bilateral side were obviously intensified and appeared like railway lines, which was different from healthy volunteers. In acute phase, 22 (53.7%) patients were accompanied by optic swelling and/or distortion, 31 (76.5%) had enhanced T1 WI, and 17 (41.5%) had high-point signal in the optic nerve. In the remission stage, 15 (36.6%) had their optic nerves atrophied, thinned or even distorted on unilateral and/or bilateral side. At the end of the study, 35 (80.5%) showed high-point signal in the optic nerve. The overall sensitivity of MRI was 94.6%, but in acute phase the sensitivity was just 43.6%, indicating the sensitivity of MRI was time-dependent and was not as sensitive as VEP. Conclusion: MRI can clearly demonstrate the changes at different stages of optic nerve atherosclerosis in NMO patients. MRI may be the first choice for diagnosis of NMO.

Objective To investigate the effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) on the systemic inflammation response in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), and to explore HBO therapy mechanisms. Methods Seventy patients with severe TBI were randomly divided into a routine treatment group ( RT group, n = 35 ) and an HBO group (n=35). All patients received conventional treatment, but the HBO group received additional early HBO therapy. Twenty age-and sex-matched normal subjects were recruited and served as normal controls. Serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) was measured by ELISA, and C reactive protein (CRP) was also measured on days 1, 7, 14 and 21 after injury. Sequential organ failure assessments (SOFAs) and Glasgow coma scale (GCS) scores were evaluated at the same time points. Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) was assessed daily. Results The concentrations of serum IL-6 and CRP increased obviously following TBI, but patients in the HBO group exhibited significantly lower levels at each time point than those in the RT group. In the HBO group fewer cases of SIRS developed, and they had a significantly shorter average duration than those in the RT group. The average SOFA score in the HBO group was significantly lower than that of the RT group at days 14 and 21 after injury, and the GCS scores had improved significantly more by day 21. Compared with the patients who were free of SIRS, the patients with SIRS showed higher levels of IL-6 and CRP, higher SOFA scores as well as lower GCS scores ( all differences statistically significant). Conclusions HBO therapy can attenuate systemic inflammation after TBI, protect the functions of important organs and improve clinical outcomes. Decreasing the level of IL-6 may contribute to the effectiveness of HBO.

Objective To investigate the effects of tropicamide and esculin-digitalisglycosides combination eye drops on low myopia of children (age ranging from 6 to 14). Methods Eighty children with 160 eyes of low myopia in the outpatient department of ophthalmology of our hospital were chose from July 2010 to April 2013, then the patients were equally divided into four groups:the control, esculin-digitalisglycosides eye drops, tropicamide, and tropicamide and esculin-digitalisglycosides combination groups. The naked vision and myopia correction of each group were compared before and after treatment for two weeks, and the treatment effects were compared among four groups. Results (1) The results showed there were no significant changes before and after treatment in the control, esculin-digitalisglycosides eye drops and tropicamide groups ( >0.05); (2) On the contrast, the tropicamide and esculin-digitalisglycosides combination have significantly improved naked vision and myopia correction after 2 weeks ( <0.05);(3) Prior to the treatment, there was no significant difference among four groups (<0.05);(4) After treatment, group under tropicamide and esculin- digitalisglycosides combined was statistical different from the other groups treated with other three eye drops ( <0.05);However, there was no statistical difference among groups in these three eyedrops. Conclusion Esculin-digitalisglycosides combined with tropicamide was the most effective treatment for low myopia of children.

To explore the expressional information of PIWIL4 in human ovarian cancer, semi-quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction(semi-qRT-PCR) was used to detect the mRNA expression level of PIWIL1, PIWIL2, PIWIL3 and PIWIL4 in human ovarian clear cell carcinoma ES-2 cells.Meanwhile, in human ovarian cancer and adjacent normal tissues, the mRNA expression of PIWIL4 was determined. Then, PIWIL4-siRNA, which was designed to target PIWIL4 and chemical synthesized, was transfected into ES-2 cells with lipofectamine.MTT assay and clone formation assay were used to investigate the effects of PIWIL4-siRNA on the cell growth activity and proliferation capacity of ES-2 cells.Experimental results showed that the mRNA expression level of PIWIL4 was the highest compared to PIWIL1, PIWIL2 and PIWIL3 in ES-2 cells(P

30% was considered sensitive and the rate ≤30% was considered resistant;and the 6 specimens were divided into 2 group according to the above standard.cDNA microassay combined with clustering analysis was used to screen for resistance-related genes.Semi-quantitative RT-PCR was used for verification of HDAC1 gene expression. Results:Three of the 6 glioma specimens belonged to the drug resistance group and the other 3 to the drug sensitive group.cDNA microarray analysis combined with cluster analysis screened out 21 genes, with 6 up-regulated and 15 down-regulated.High expression of gene HDAC1 was noticed in all the 6 specimens by semi-quantitative RT-PCR,and the trend was similar to that by microassay. Conclusion:The primary drug resistance of glioma may be associated with the 21 genes screened by cDNA microarray;the detailed mechanisms for drug controlling still need to discussed in the future.

Objective To explore the correlation between Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection and recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) in children over 6 years old and its relative treatment.Me-thods One hundred and eighty children over 6 years old with the diagnosis of RAP from Mar.2007 to Feb.2009 were selected,30 healthy children without RAP were taken as the healthy control group at the same period.14C-urea breath test (14C-UBT) was used to detect whether the patient was infected by Hp.The radical cure of Hp was given to the Hp-positive children with RAP,and the remission rate of children with RAP and the Hp negative rate were observed. Results The positive rate in RAP group was 58.33%,which was higher significantly than that in healthy control group(20.00%)(P0.05).The positive rate of those with and without bad eating habits were 45.56% and 12.78%,and the positive rate of with and without family gastrosis history was 49.44% and 8.89%,which both had significant difference between them(Pa
