Objective To discuss the effect of deferoxamine in the treatment of chronic hydrocephalus (CH) after intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in rats. Methods A total of 184 female Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into normal saline group ( NS group), intracerebroventricular blood infusion group (Group A ) and deferoxamine plus intracerebroventricular blood infusion group ( Group B). The rat CH models were made by infusing autologous whole blood ( 130 μl) into the right lateral cerebral ventricle. The escape latency time was detected by Morris water maze at days 14 and 28.The rats were sacrificed 1,3, 7, 14, 28 days later, the transverse diameter of the lateral ventricle on the coronal slice of rat brain 0.4 mm posterior to the bregma was measured for evaluation of hydrocephalus and the index of ventricle. Pathological changes of the brain were observed. Results No CH was found in the NS group. The incidence of CH in the Group A was 73% (11/15), which was significantly higher than 27% (4/15) in Group B at day 28. The escape latency time in the NS group was (8.21 ± 2.00) s,which was significantly shorter than ( 16.36 ±5.93 ) s of the Group A ( P <0.01 ). There was no significant difference in the escape latency time between the NS group and Group B [(11.38 ± 2.57 )s] (P >0.05 ). The index of ventricle in the NS group was 1.05 ± 0.41, which was smaller than 4.53 ± 1.70 in Group A and 2.77 ± 1.53 in Group B (P < 0.05 ). There were no obvious pathological changes in the NS group at different time points. There found edema of white matter surrounding the ventricle, twist and engorged callosum, proliferation of rhagiocrine cell as well as hemosiderin deposit in Group A. However, no hemosiderin deposit was found in Group B. Conclusions The content of iron in the cerebrospinal fluid may be correlated with hydrocephalus after IVH. Preventive use of deferoxamine can reduce incidence of hydrocephalus after ICH.

Traditional herbal medicines, Panax ginseng, Panax quinquefolium and Panax notoginseng, attract our attention for their extensive and powerful pharmacological activities. Ginsenosides are the main active constituents of these medicinal herbs. The related glycosyltransferases involved in ginsenoside biosynthesis are the key enzymes which catalyze the last important step. Modification of ginsenoside aglycones by glycosyltransferases produces the complexity and diversity of ginsenosides, which have more extensive pharmacological activity. At present, ginsenoside aglycones and compound K have been obtained by synthetic biology. As the last step of ginsenoside biosynthesis, glycosylation of ginsenoside aglycones has been studied intensively in recent years. This review summarizes the basic strategies and research advances in studies on glycosyltransferases involved in ginsenoside biosynthesis, which is expected to lay the theoretical foundation for the in-depth research of biosynthetic pathway of ginsenosides and their production by synthetic biology.

A comparable study were carried out by determination of trace elements on five marine-derived shell traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) (Ostreae Concha, Haliotidis Concha, Margaritifera Concha, Meretricis Concha, and Arcae Concha), which were recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2010 version). Seven trace elements in 51 batches of this type of shell TCM were analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), combined with principal component analysis (PCA) methods. The content of element Se, which exhibited significant differences among different drugs, could be used as a key element to distinguish this type of drugs. Meanwhile, the contents of elements Co, Cu, Mo, and Ba in Haliotidis Concha, Co and As in Margaritifera Concha, Mo and As in Meretricis Concha, Mo, As, and Ba in Arcae Concha, and Zn in Meretricis Concha were relatively stable. In the PCA plot, Arcae Concha and Meretricis Concha could be efficiently distinguished from Ostreae Concha together with Haliotidis Concha, and Margaritifera Concha. The results also showed a correlation with their medicinal function. In conclusion, trace elements in marine-derived shell TCM could not be neglected for their quality control.

BACKGROUND:Studies have shown that vacuum sealing drainage can accelerate wound healing through increasing the wound blood flow, but its influence on activated gelatinases in human chronic wound stil lacks corresponding research. OBJECTIVE:To observe the effect of vacuum sealing drainage on the activity of gelatinase during the healing of chronic wounds. METHODS:Total y 96 trauma patients admitted at the People’s Hospital of Hubei University of Medicine from April 2013 to January 2014 were divided into two groups:52 patients in chronic wound group were treated with vacuum sealing drainage and 44 in control group treated with wound drainage at 3 days after removal of breast cancer. In the chronic wound group, exudates from pressure sores and skin necrosis after removal of breast cancer were col ected as samples A and B;exudates from two cases of venous stasis ulcer were col ected as samples C and D;exudates from traumatic skin wounds col ected as sample E. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:TLC analyzer showed that:after 15-day negative pressure therapy, activities of matrix metal oproteinase 2 in sample A with low activity of gelatinase, matrix metal oproteinase 9 in sample B, matrix metal oproteinase 2 and 9 in samples C, D, E were al increased significantly (P<0.05);however, the activities of matrix metal oproteinase 9 in sample A with high activity of gelatinases and matrix metal oproteinase 2 in sample B were reduced significantly after treatment (P<0.05). In addition, no significant difference was found in the activity of matrix metal oproteinase 2, matrix metal oproteinase 9 and activated gelatinase betweenthe chronic wound group and control group (P>0.05). These findings indicate that the variation of activated gelatinases activity in human chronic wounds may be the reason why the chronic wounds cannot be healed for a long time, but vacuum sealing drainage can regulate the activity of activated gelatinases in chronic wounds.
