This study examined the residue of dl-methylephedrine hydrochloride (MEP) on the muscle of pigs administered orally with MEP 12 g/ton feed for seven consecutive days. Twenty healthy cross swine were administered MEP. Four treated animals were selected arbitrarily to be sacrificed at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 days after treatment. MEP residue concentrations in the muscle were determined by liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. The drug was extracted from muscle samples using 10 mM ammonium formate in acetonitrile followed by clean-up with n-hexane. The analyte was separated on an XBridgeTM hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography column using 10 mM ammonium formate in deionized distilled water and acetonitrile. The correlation coefficient (R2 ) of the calibration curve was 0.9974, and the limits of detection and quantification were 0.05 and 0.15 μg/ kg, respectively. The recoveries at three spiking levels were 94.5–101.2%, and the relative Standard Deviations was less than 4.06%.In the MEP-treated group, MEP residues on one day post-treatment were below the maximum residue limit in the muscle. The developed method is sensitive and reliable for the detection of MEP in porcine muscle tissues. Furthermore, it exhibits low quantification limits for animal-derived food products destined for human consumption.

This study was designed for the facial reconstruction of Father Dae -Gun (Andrea) Kim, who is the first priest in Korea. The study was entrusted by Seoul great parish, Myeongdong Cathedral and was conducted during 15 months from September 1999. To reconstruct the face of Father Dae -Gun (Andrea) Kim, we used photographs and metric data of Father Dae -Gun (Andrea) Kim's skull, which was measured by Department of Anatomy, Catholic Medical College at 1971. Based on above data, we found a skull similar to Father Dae -Gun (Andrea) Kim, replicated it, and modified it to be consistent with that of Father Dae -Gun (Andrea) Kim measured at 1971. The face of Father Dae -Gun (Andrea) Kim was reconstructed on the modified replica of Father Dae -Gun (Andrea) Kim's skull using the forensic anthropological data about the average skin depth and the relationships of skull morphology to facial features of Korean. The average skin depth of Korean face was obtained from direct measurement of cadavers and indirect measurement of live Korean using ultrasonography. The result of facial reconstruction of Father Dae -Gun (Andrea) Kim was made as the bronze bust. The forensic anthropologic method such as facial reconstruction is one of the methods to identify unidentified -skull. This study is the first facial reconstruction on the base of Korean physical anthropological data and is thought to be helpful to the facial reconstruction for identification.

PURPOSE: Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein enzyme that synthesizes telomeric DNA onto the ends of chromosomes, thereby preventing the replication-dependent shortening of those ends. This enzyme is essential for stability of eukaryotic chromosomes and may be necessary for cell immortalization. Telomerase activity is detected in a wide range of cancers of various tissues, and its expression may be a critical step in tumor progression. METHODS: The telomerase activity was measured using a telomeric repeat amplification protocol (TRAP) assay in 65 cases of breast cancers, 9 cases of fibroadenomas, and 7 cases of normal breast tissues. To compare the telomerase activity with cell cycle regulators, we measured the expression of the cyclin D1 and the p53 proteins by using immunohistochemical analysis. To compare the telomerase activity with traditional prognostic indicators, we measured the ER, PR, c-erbB-2 and ki-67 expression by using immunohistochemical analysis. Disease-free survival and overall survival in relation to telomerase activity were studied by using the Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS: Telomerase activity was detected in 42 (64.6%) of the 65 breast cancers, 4 (44.4%) of the 9 fibroadenomas, and in none of the 7 normal breast tissues. There was no significant relationship between telomerase activity and cell cycle regulators such as cyclin D1 or p53. There was no statistical correlation between telomerase activity and tumor size, lymph nodal status, or histopathological prognostic parameters, such as ER, PR, p53, c-erbB-2 and ki-67, but a significant correlation was found (p=0.006) between telomerase activity and histologic grade. The telomerase activity was not significantly correlated with either the overall survival or the disease-free survival. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that telomerasemay play a role in the malignant transformation of breast tissue and that this enzyme was more activated in cancers of a poor histologic grade. However, the telomerase activity was not related to cell cycle regulators and traditional prognostic parameters. The possible significance of telomerase activity in breast cancer remains open to further investigation.

Distal thumb injuries are a common and difficult problem for hand surgeons. Coverage of soft tissue on the fingers may be difficult due to the size of the defect or the limitation of local flap mobilization. However, the variable anatomy of the dorsal hand vascular system sometimes prevents successful flap harvest. The purpose of this study was to clarify the vascular anatomy of the dorsal side of the thumb and the first web for the flaps. Twenty six hands (13 right and 13 left hands) from Korean embalmed cadavers were dissected. A catheter was inserted into the radial artery in the forearm, and the red colored latex (Latex 671, Dupont Industry, France) was injected until the dorsum of the hand was colored. The arrangement of the first dorsal metacarpal artery (FDMA) and its branches were vary and classified into three categories according to their branching patterns; Both dorso-ulnar thumb branch (DUTB) and dorso-radial index branch (DRIB) arose from the FDMA (10 cases, 38.5%). Each DUTB and DRIB arose separately from the radial artery (5 cases, 19.2%). The DUTB and the DRIB originated from the princeps pollicis artery and the radial artery, respectively (11 cases, 42.3%). The typical course of the FDMA and its branches ran overlying the first dorsal interosseous muscle in 17 cases of the 26 specimens (65.4%). However, in nine cases (34.6%) the DRIB ran on the first dorsal interosseous muscle and the DUTB had a deep course within the substance of the first dorsal interosseous muscle. The FDMA flap represents a good option to cover defects for the thumb. These anatomical findings in the present study could provide useful knowledge of flaps for dorsal aspect of the thumb and the first web.

To establish appropriate conditions for a disinfectant efficacy test at subzero temperatures, this study examined mixtures of frozen foot-and-mouth disease virus or avian influenza virus solutions and disinfectant diluents at −5℃ and monitored temperature and freezing status of an anti-freezing diluent (AFD, 15% ethanol + 30% propylene glycol + 55% distilled water) over time at various subzero temperatures. Viral solutions and disinfectant diluents froze before the mixtures reached −5℃, whereas the AFD was not frozen at −30℃. The times taken for the AFD to reach −10, −20, −30, and −40℃ from room temperature were 36, 39, 45, and 48 min, respectively.

BACKGROUND: Granulocyte transfusion therapy has been used as supportive care for patients with prolonged neutropenia after intensive chemotherapy or peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT). Here, we investigated clinical factors of granulocyte transfusion therapy for neutropenic patients with infection to evaluate its efficacy and safety. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 25 neutropenic patients treated with 99 granulocyte collection and granulocyte transfusion therapy from October 2011 to April 2016 at the National Cancer Center was conducted. Two groups, a count recovery group with a cut off of >1,000/µL and a no recovery group were compared and symptoms related with granulocyte transfusion were analyzed. RESULTS: Granulocyte collection and transfusions were performed in 99 procedures. After granulocyte transfusion therapy, 21 patients (84%) showed count recovery, whereas 4 patients (16%) had no response. Significant differences in pre-absolute neutrophil count (29/µL vs. 0/µL, P=0.048), duration of neutropenia before granulocyte transfusion (11 days vs. 26 days, P=0.011), and total number of granulocyte transfusion (2 times vs. 11 times, P=0.049) were observed between groups. Temporary symptoms related granulocyte transfusion were observed in seven patients (28%); however, all patients showed clinical improvement. The median of the single transfusion volume was 220 mL (200 to 397 mL) and the mean total granulocyte content was 4.92×10¹⁰. CONCLUSION: Granulocyte transfusion therapy is safe and effective for patient with life threatening neutropenia and infection, also considerable for early onset trial for granulocyte transfusion.

Rhabdomyolysis is defined as skeletal muscle injury with release of muscle cell constituents into the plasma and may lead to acute renal failure secondary to myoglobinuria. The causes of rhabdomyolysis is diverse:alcohol abuse, primary muscle disease, disturbance of muscle metabolism, sustained seizure, infection, drugs, tox ins, trauma, severe exercise, CO intoxication etc. Rhabdomyolysis may cause acute derangement in electrolyte balance and death. It should be diagnosed earlier and managed properly. We experienced a 49 year-old woman developed acute renal failure and myoglobinuria after alcohol drinking. A kidney biopsy revealed acute interstitial nephritis. In the presence of otherwise unexplained acute renal failure in alcoholic patients, rhabdomyolysis should be considered in the differential diagnosis.
