Objective: To investigate the effect of vitamin B12 on the growth and hemopoiesis of broilers. Methods: The Arbor Acres broilers were fed the experimental diets with different doses of vitamin B12 0.00, 0.008, 0.016, 0.024 mg/kg for 3 weeks. The body weight gain and hematologic indices of the broilers were measured. Results: Vitamin B12 deficiency in the diet could depress the body weight gain and feed conversion ratio of the broilers, decrease the amount of red blood cell and hemoglobin, enlarge the volume of red blood cell, increase the content of each cell hemoglobin, reduce platelet in blood. While 0.008 mg/kg vitamin B12 was added in the experimental diets, the body weight gain and feed conversion ratio of the broilers increased markedly. Furthermore, when 0.016mg/kg vitamin B12 was added to the diet, the number of the red blood cell and the content of hemoglobin of the broilers increased significantly, and the shape and volume of the red blood cell became ordinary. There were significants interrelations between BWG,RBC,Hb,PCV,PLT,MCV,MCH of the broilers and the addition of vitamin B12 in the diet. Conclusion: Vitamin B12 deficiency could result in the megaloblastic animia. 0.02-0.03 mg vitamin B12 per kilo diet was required to maintain the growth and normal hemopoiesis of the broilers.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multiple organ autoimmune disorder, including the liver, but the possible reason in impairment in the liver is still unclear. Our present study assessed alterations of transcription factor Foxp3(+) regulatory T cells (Tregs) and several other immune molecules [programmed cell death 1 and its ligand (PD1 and PD-L1), and interleukin 10 (IL-10) and transform growth factor β (TGF-β)] in the liver and other major organs of lupus-prone BXSB mice by flow cytometry, real-time quantitative reverse transcription PCR, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results showed that both frequency and number of Foxp3(+) Tregs were dramatically reduced in the thymus, spleen and kidney of the BXSB mice (P<0.05), but those in the liver were kept in nearly normal range, when compared to negative control C57BL/6 mice. In comparison to control mice, the mRNA levels of Foxp3, PD1 and PD-L1 were significantly decreased in the kidneys of BXSB mice (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference in the livers of the BXSB mice (P>0.05). Protein levels of IL-10 and TGF-β in serum showed no significant difference between BXSB and C57BL/6 mice, but were significantly increased in the kidneys and livers of BXSB mice as compared with those in C57BL/6 mice (P<0.05). These results suggest that reduced Foxp3(+) Tregs are involved in the pathogenesis of SLE in BXSB mice, and relatively higher number of these cells in the livers than in the other target organs could constitute a protective mechanism against hepatic lesions in lupus-prone mice, which may provide insights into development of new therapeutic approaches in SLE patients.

Objective To investigate the diagnosis and treatment of hepatic metastasis from gastrointestinal stromal turnor(GIST).Methods The clinical data of 16 patients with GIST who had been admitted to our hospitalfrom December 1993 to May 2007 were retrospectively analyzed. Results Of all patients,14 underwent radical resection and 2 underwent palliative operation. Two patients with palliative operation and 3 with radical resection were administered with imatinib postoperatively. All patients were followed up for 3-161 months, and GIST metastasis and invasion was observed in 8 of the 14 patients who received radical resection.Of the 7 patients with hepatic metastasis.3 were treated with hepatic artery chemoembolization,1 was administered with imatinib,2 received reoperation and 1 did not receive any treatment. Reoperation was carried out on 1 patient who had abdominal wall metastasis. The 1-and 3-year survival rates of the 16 patients were 92%and 74%,respectively.Conclusions The recurrence rate of GIST after hepatectomy is high.Complete surgical resection is the best curative treatment for hepatic metastasis from GIST and GIST recurrence. The combination of surgical resection and imatinib administration may help to improve the prognosis of patients with hepatic metastasis from GIST.

Objective To introduce treatment of old scaphoid fractures by internal fixation with common screws which have been modified into compression-like ones. Methods Twenty-five patients with old scaphoid fracture were admitted to our department from January,1995 to December,2002.They were 17 cases of delayed union, and eight cases of non-union and pseudoarticulation formation. All the patients were treated with open re- duction anti internal fixation by modified common cortical bone screws, some threads of which bad been erased so that they could act somewhat like compression ones. The modified screws were driven into the reduced scaphoid by simple surgical instruments to fix and compress the fracture ends. Results Nineteen cases were followed up for one to six years (mean,3 years).Fourteen cases of fracture healed, with an average healing time of 7 months. The mean extension-flexion arc of the injured wrists was between 106 degrees and 128 degrees.Three cases failed to heal, and two cases experienced deformed and sunken proximal scaphoid. Conclusions Common cortical bone screws can be easily changed into compression-like ones to treat old scaphoid fractures and result in satisfactory, clinic outcome. In addition, they are easily available, can be inserted through joint facet with limited negative effect on the joint, and play a double role of compression and fixation.

Objective To establish the anti-infective tissue engineered bones (TEBs) and evaluate the anti-infective and osteogenic effects of the infection-prevention TEBs on femoral large bone defects in goats. Methods Based on the controlledrelease antibiotic system fibrin gel-coated vancomycin alginate beads (FG-Vanco-AB),the infection-prevention TEBs were established and evaluated. They were transplanted into the critical-size defects in the right femurs of goats.TEBs without the controlled-release antibiotic system were used as controls and transplanted into the left femoral defects. The breakpoint sensitivity of vancomycin (5 mg/mL) for S.aureus was used as a standard concentration.Postoperatively, the vancomycin concentrations in the lesion site,in the adjacent site and in the circulation,as well as the anti-infective effects of the infection-prevention TEBs were evaluated by High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).Bone hcaling was assessed by histology,CT and ECT.The results were used to evaluate the osteogenic effect of the infection-prevention TEBs.Results Results from ESM,CLSM and in vivo tracing showed that the in vitro and in vivo survival conditions of seeded cells were analogous to those of TEBs.The effective concentration (over the bactericidal concentration) of vancomycin in bilateral defects and in blood lasted for 28 days,2 days and 7 days, respectively. The concentration of vancomycin in the femur decreased gradually from the grafted site to both ends.At 28 and 56 days postoperatively, the ECT results showed no significant difference between the right and left femurs.CT and histology demonstrated that at 14,28 and 112 days after surgery, bone defects in the bilateral femurs were repaired synchronously, and were completely covered by new bone tissue after 112 days. Conclusion The anti-infective TEBs were successfully established.FG-Vanco -AB in the transplanted sites provided the local bone tissues with anti-infective capability whilst not interfered the process of bone reconstnction and wound healing.
