Infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) is an important member of the Birnaviridae family. IBUV mainly targets the bursa of Fabricius, the central immune organ of chicken, resulting in chicken infectious bursal disease (IBD). IBD represents one of the great challenges for ongoing development of the poultry industry. Reverse genetics for IBDV emerged over twenty years ago. Since then, the technologies behind virus rescue have continually improved leading to a deep understanding of IBDV gene function and tailored vaccine development. Our lab has also been instrumental in the field of IBDV research. Here we review studies on the pathogenic mechanism and the effective prevention and control of IBD.

OBJECTIVETo describe the transvenous catheterization technique for the treatment of cavernous sinus dural arteriovenous fistulas (CSdAVFs), including its indications, complications and efficacy.
METHODSEight patients with symptomatic CSdAVFs were treated by endovascular embolization with platinum coils, via the inferior petrosal sinus (IPS) in 6 patients, and via the Sylvian vein after surgical exposure in other 2 patients.
RESULTSComplete angiographic resolution of the fistula was obtained in six patients immediately after the procedures, and a complete resolution of symptoms and signs was achieved in all patients. The residual fistulas in two patients disappeared completely in the follow-up angiography.
CONCLUSIONTransvenous embolization is a useful and safe approach in the management of CSdAVFs.

To screen the interactive proteins with IBDV Gt VP2 protein from cDNA library of B Lymphoid cells of the bursa of Fabricius. The expression cDNA library plasmids was transformed to the yeast competent cells, which have the bait plasmid-Gt VP2. After testing for growth in synthetic complete medium lacking histidine and uracil and for production of beta-galactosidase (X-gal), we obtained 16 positive clones. We searched the gene sequences of positive clones in the NCBI website. The blast results showed that five positive clones were the gallus sequences. They were Gallus gallus breed mitochondrial DNA, O_G1cNAc transferase, Tumor protein p53 binding protein, Stathmin and Chondroitin sulfate Ga1NAcT-2, respectively. This study is helpful for the further identifying the receptors of IBDV in B Lymphoid cells of the bursa of Fabricius.

Chinese Journal of Biotechnology 2011;27(3):436-444
We studied the effects of three inorganic carbon sources, Na2CO3, NaHCO3 and CO2, and their initial concentrations on lipid production of Chlorella vulgaris. Chlorella vulgaris could utilize Na2CO3, NaHCO3 and CO2 to produce lipids. After 10-day cultivation with each of the three inorganic carbon sources, lipid yield of Chlorella vulgaris reached its peak with the concentration increase of the inorganic carbon source, but dropped again by further increase of the concentration. The pH value of the culture medium for Chlorella vulgaris increased after the cultivation on inorganic carbon source. The optimal concentration of both Na2CO3 and NaHCO3 was 40 mmol/L, and their corresponding biomass dry weight was 0.52 g/L and 0.67 g/L with their corresponding lipid yield 0.19 g/L and 0.22 g/L. When the concentration of CO2 was 6%, Chlorella vulgaris grew the fastest and its biomass dry weight was 2.42 g/L with the highest lipid yield of 0.72 g/L. When the concentration of CO2 was too low, the supply of inorganic carbon was insufficient and lipid yield was low. A too high concentration of CO2 caused a low pH and lipid accumulation was inhibited. Na2CO3 and NaHCO3 were more favorable for Chlorella vulgaris to accumulate unsaturated fatty acids than that of CO2.

Shanghai Journal of Preventive Medicine 2022;34(5):448-452
ObjectiveTo evaluate the warning effect of different tobacco packaging on teenagers and provide an objective evidence for improving tobacco packaging in China. MethodsA multi-stage cluster sampling method was used to investigate students from two middle schools and two high schools in Huangpu District, Shanghai with a self-filled questionnaire survey, and a total of 1 238 valid questionnaires were collected. Epidata 3.1 was used to input data and SPSS 20.0 was used for data analysis. ResultsAbout 69% of the respondents supported printing pictures of diseases on tobacco packages in China, and 81.58% thought graphic warnings should cover more than 70% of the tobacco package. The effect of graphic health warning labels was better than that of text-only warning labels (P<0.05), and the effect of real photos was better than abstract pictures. In addition, labels with real graphic warnings had the highest scores in terms of preventing youth smoking and the degree of support, which was significantly different from abstract graphic warning labels and text-only warning labels (P<0.05). ConclusionCigarette packs with graphic health warnings have a stronger effect on teenagers than plain text health warnings. Teenagers support the use of graphic warnings. It is recommended to apply graphic health warnings with real photos of diseases on the cigarette packages to maximize the effect of the health warnings.

Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2018;35(4):571-577
Pectus carinatum (PC) is one of the most common chest wall anomalies, which is characterized by the protrusion of the anterior chest wall including the sternum and adjacent costal cartilages. Mildly patients suffer from mental problems such as self-abasement, while severely suffering patients are disturbed by significant cardiopulmonary symptoms. The traditional Haller index, which is widely used clinically to evaluate the severity of PC, is deficient in diagnosis efficiency and classification. This paper presents an improved Haller index algorithm for PC: first, the contour of the patient chest in the axial computed tomography (CT) slice where the most convex thorax presents is extracted; and then a cubic B-spline curve is employed to fit the extracted contour followed by an eclipse fitting procedure; finally, the improved Haller index and the classification index are automatically calculated based on the analytic curves. The results of CT data analysis using 22 preoperative and postoperative patient CT datasets show that the proposed diagnostic index for PC can diagnose and classify PC patients correctly, which confirms the feasibility of the evaluation index. Furthermore, digital measurement techniques can be employed to improve the diagnostic efficiency of PC, achieving one small step towards the computer-aided intelligent diagnosis and treatment for pediatric chest wall malformations.

To promote the development of extracellular vesicles of herbal medicine especially the establishment of standardization, led by the National Expert Committee on Research and Application of Chinese Herbal Vesicles, research experts in the field of herbal medicine and extracellular vesicles were invited nationwide with the support of the Expert Committee on Research and Application of Chinese Herbal Vesicles, Professional Committee on Extracellular Vesicle Research and Application, Chinese Society of Research Hospitals and the Guangdong Engineering Research Center of Chinese Herbal Vesicles. Based on the collation of relevant literature, we have adopted the Delphi method, the consensus meeting method combined with the nominal group method to form a discussion draft of "Consensus statement on research and application of Chinese herbal medicine derived extracellular vesicles-like particles (2023)". The first draft was discussed in online and offline meetings on October 12, 14, November 2, 2022 and April and May 2023 on the current status of research, nomenclature, isolation methods, quality standards and research applications of extracellular vesicles of Chinese herbal medicines, and 13 consensus opinions were finally formed. At the Third Academic Conference on Research and Application of Chinese Herbal Vesicles, held on May 26, 2023, Kewei Zhao, convenor of the consensus, presented and read the consensus to the experts of the Expert Committee on Research and Application of Chinese Herbal Vesicles. The consensus highlights the characteristics and advantages of Chinese medicine, inherits the essence, and keeps the righteousness and innovation, aiming to provide a reference for colleagues engaged in research and application of Chinese herbal vesicles at home and abroad, decode the mystery behind Chinese herbal vesicles together, establish a safe, effective and controllable accurate Chinese herbal vesicle prevention and treatment system, and build a bridge for Chinese medicine to the world.
