World Science and Technology-Modernization of Traditional Chinese Medicine 2013;(3):539-542
This study was aimed to observe the mechanism of Jia-Jian Xiao-Yao (JJXY) Powder improving facial skin barrier function of the hormone-dependent dermatitis patients. A total of 100 patients were randomly divided into two groups. In the treatment group, 50 cases were orally administered with JJXY Powder. In the control group, loratadine and vitamin EC particles were orally administered to the 50 cases. Thirty days is one treatment course. Changes of transepidermal water loss (TEWL), skin erythema amount and IL-4 were detected in patients of both groups before and after the treatment. The results showed that the clinical efficiency of treatment group and control group was 82.0% and 58.0%, respectively. In the treatment group, the TEWL and skin erythema amount were obviously decreased after the treatment (P < 0.05). In the treatment group, the decreasing range of serum IL-4 was significant compared to control group (P < 0.05). It was concluded that JJXY Powder is one of the effective methods for the treatment of facial hormone-dependent dermatitis. It is able to repair facial hormone-dependent dermatitis in patients with impaired skin barrier function and reduce the amount of skin erythema. The therapeutic mechanism may be related to the regulation of serum IL-4.

OBJECTIVETo determine the effect of AQP1 gene on facial nerve edema following injury through investigation of the relationship between the expression of AQP1 gene and Schwann cells swelling.
METHODSThe AQP1 expression in Schwann cells of mouse facial nerve tissues was detected by immunofluorescent staining. The transgenic protocol by lentivirus transduction was used to specifically upregulate AQP1 expression in Schwann cells. Lenti-AQP1 and CTRL (empty vector) transduced cells were observed during gene overexpression every 24 h for 6 days by using phase contrast microscopy. Cell volume of CTRL and Lenti-AQP1 treated cells was measured daily from the day of treatment, through day 6.
RESULTSSchwann cell primary cultures maintained a high level of AQP1 water channels, representing an ideal cell model to study the role of AQP1 in the facial nerve. The expression of AQP1 mRNA and protein in Schwann cells infected with the Lenti-AQP1 was increased significantly compared with CTRL lentivirus (P < 0.05). Lenti-AQP1 caused cell swelling in cultured Schwann cells, as validated by cell volume determinations (P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONSAQP1 is an important factor responsible for the fast water transport of cultured Schwann cells. It plays an important role in facial nerve edema.

National traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) master professor Ban Xiuwen had rich experiences on treatment of gynecological diseases with unique insights on diagnosis and treatment for disorders of menstruation, leukorrhea, pregnancy and delivery. FemaleYin-Wei, which was a gynecological disorder, was recorded in the book ofHuang-Di Nei-Jing. However, due to different reasons, TCM study on femaleYin-Wei was far less than the study on male impotence. ProfessorBan Xiuwen had specific considerations for this disease on the book of Treatment of Miscellaneous Gynecological Diseases. In his understanding, femaleYin-Wei was due to four aspects, which were the innate deficiency, yang deficiency and coldness of the uterus; seven emotion damage, liver-qi soothing disorder; spleen-stomach deficiency,qi-blood deficiency; and phlegm-dampness stasis,qi stagnation. Through the analysis and study on case records of femaleYin-Wei treatment by national TCM master professorBan Xiuwen, this article briefly elaborated professorBan Xiuwen’s understandings on femaleYin-Wei treatment from etiology, pathogenesis, treatment according to syndrome differentiation, and clinical experiences. Two femaleYin-Wei cases treated by professorBan Xiuwen were given as examples in order to analyze the etiology, pathogenesis, treatment according to syndrome differentiation and treatment experiences in details. The therapeutic effects of both cases were obvious, which were also important study documents.
