The number of projects and the amount of sponsoring funds have been increasing during the past years.Conventional research branches are respiratory tumor and digestive tumor.Emerging research branches are lung transplantation and lung preservation.Underdeveloped research branches are acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome and thymic tumor. The position and academic impact of domestic thoracic surgery has been more valuable with the increasing number, quality and achievements of SCI papers. Therefore, international cooperation and megamergers should be encouraged and more attention should be paid to the censorship, implementation and achievements to optimize the value of projects. The aim of this article is providing important information on projects sponsored by National Nature Science Foundation of China(NSFC) in the field of general thoracic surgery, promoting the development of thoracic surgery of China.

Objective To investigate the safety and efficacy of Embosphere microsphere in the treatment of massive hemoptysis during bronchial arterial embolization(BAE).To analyze the factors influencing the recurrence by Cox regression model. Methods Ninety patients with massive hemoptysis who underwent BAE using Embosphere microsphere were included. The immediate hemo-stasis rate within 24 hours, clinical success rate and prognostic factors were statistically analyzed. Results The immediate hemosta-sis rate within 24 hours was 94.4%(85/90).The clinical success rate was 56.7%(51/90).Cumulative hemoptysis-free recurrence con-trol rates at 6 months,1 year and 2 years postoperative were 81%,78%and 57%,respectively.Cox regression model analysis showed that the variables associated with recurrence were long-term hemoptysis, lung cancer, tuberculosis and lung destruction. Conclusion Embosphere microsphere are safe and effective embolic particles in the treatment of massive hemoptysis during BAE.Risk factors for hemoptysis recurrence include long-term hemoptysis, lung cancer, tuberculosis and lung destruction.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the clinical effects of manipulative reduction and percutaneous locking compression plate internal fixation for the treatment of mid-distal tibiofibula shaft fractures.
METHODSFrom January 2006 to October 2009,46 patients suffering from mid-distal tibiofibula shaft fractures were treated with closed manipulative reduction and LCP, involved 27 males and 19 females with an average age of 39 years old ranging from 17 to 56 years. According to AO classification, there were 12 cases of type A, 24 of type B, 10 of type C. The duration of visiting hospital were from 2 hours to 3 days after being injured for these patients. The injured limbs of the patients were swollen and painful, even with bony crepitus. The wound, function of the injured limb and union of fractures were observed after operation.
RESULTSAll the patients were followed up from 12 to 18 months (averaged 15 months). It was found that the wound of all patients had primary healing without any infection. The fracture healing time was 12 to 18 weeks (means 14 weeks). The results were excellent in 40 cases, good in 4 and fair in 2.
CONCLUSIONLess invasive, more stable fixation, shorter healing time and better functional rehabilitation are observed in the treatment of mid-distal tibiofibula shaft fractures after manipulative reduction and percutaneous locking compression plate internal fixation.
