AIM: To study the effects of different dose proportioning the danggui-shaoyao powder (DS) on learning and memory and the content of NO in brain in mice. METHODS: The ability of learning and memory was measured by the step-through task and the water maze task. The content of NO in brain was determined referring to the reagent manual. RESULTS: All different dose proportion of DS promoted the memory of normal mice. And only DS 1 (1 5.4) and DS 3 (1 1.34) obviously improved the scopolamine-induced mice passive avoidance handicap, prolonged the latency, and decreased number of errors. DS 3(1 1.34) obviously improved reserpine-induced mice spatial orientation handicap and prolonged the latency; others had no remarkable effect on spatial orientation handicap of mice. And all different dose proportions of DS could reduce the content of NO in the brain of passive avoidance disruption mice induced by scopolamine. CONCLUSION: DS 3 (1 1.34) improves passive avoidance handicap and spatial orientation handicap of mice, and reduced the content of NO in the brain of passive avoidance handicap mice induced by scopolamine. The effect of DS 3(1 1.34) is the best on benefiting memory.

ObjectiveTo evaluate biomechanical properties of transoralpharyngeal atlantoaxial reduction plate (TARP) prepared from magnesium alloy and titanium alloy for the atlantoaxial dislocation by using three-dimensional finite element analysis and to exam the feasibility of using magnesium alloy for preparation of TARP system so as to provide a theoretical basis for clinical surgery.MethodsA patient with typical atlantoaxial fracture dislocation was involved in the study, and received thin CT scan with clinically used titanium alloy TARP system for obtaining DICOM image data.Three-dimensional finite element analysis software was imported to simulate magnesium alloy and titanium alloy TARP systems for reduction and fixation. Then, stress changes of the atlas, axis, internal fixators and C2/3 zygapophysial joints were determined with three-dimensional finite element analysis and analyzed statistically. Results ( 1 ) The finite element model of atlantoaxial dislocation reduction and fixation had lifelike outline and good geometric similarity. There were 53 586 nodes and 180 784 units.(2) During the simulation of head in neutral position, the stress concentration region was C2/3 zygapophysial joints followed by the anterior arch, posterior arch and lateral mass of atlas respectively, and C2 vertebral arch again.( 3 )Magnesium alloy and titanium alloy TARP systems showed significant difference in stress distribution (P <0.05).Conclusions(1)The atlantoaxial model established according to its structure information on CT can be used for biomechanical experiments.(2) For the treatment of atlantoaxial dislocation using the existing titanium TARP system, maintaining the integrity of anterior and posterior arch of atlas and confirming the bone fusion in lateral mass can better keep the stability of the atlantoaxis. After atlantoaxial fusion, the increased stress of the zygapophysial joints of the adjacent segments accelerates structural degeneration, which should be closely followed up.( 3 ) Magnesium alloy TARP system for fixation and reduction shows the fall in peak value of the stress concentration region, and improvement of the uniformity of stress distribution as compared with titanium alloy TARP.

Objective To review and analyze the prenatal diagnosis and treatment of fetal bronchopulmonary sequestration (BPS).Methods Data of 68 BPS fetuses in the Department of Fetal Medicine,Guangdong Women and Children Hospital and Health Institute from January 20,2009 to January 31,2013 were reviewed. All of the 68 fetuses were diagnosed by ultrasound and volume to head circumference ratio (CVR) was measured.Postnatal surgeries at neonatal or infantile period were performed and babies were followed-up.Results With antenatal ultrasonography, fetal chest solid or hyper-echoic mass was found in all 68 cases at an average of 24 weeks of gestation (18-30 weeks) and were diagnosed as BPS after at least twice ultrasound scans.CVR was measured in these 68 cases, among them 56 cases (82.4%) were <1.6,and 12 cases (17.6%) were ≥1.6.Among the 12 cases with CVR≥1.6,seven developed fetal hydrops.Except for two terminated pregnancies because of CVR≥ 1.6 with fetal hydrops, all of the rest 66 cases continued their pregnancies till birth and 58 (87.9%) neonates were asymptomatic and eight (12.1%) were symptomatic. The mass was undetectable with ultrasonography in 18 fetuses during the third trimester, however, the mass was identifed again under CT scan after birth in 14 cases (another four cases unexamined). There were totally 45 cases fully recovered after lobectomy or BPS resection after birth, among which five cases underwent emergency surgery in neonatal period.Pathology results showed that 12 cases were intra-lobar and 33 cases were extra-lobar type.Totally, six cases were diagnosed as BPS under diaphragm.Sixty cases were followed up at three months to two years after birth, and all developed well and CT scan indicated normal pulmonary function. Conclusions Most BPS fetuses without hydrops have a good outcome.Fetus with BPS could wait for full term delivery following professional evaluation and standard protocol. However, the prognosis of BPS with fetal hydrops depends on prenatal evaluation and early surgical intervention. And the effect of early surgical intervention in BPS neonates is satisfied.CVR is the most important index for prenatal evaluation of BPS and CT scan after birth is critical for those babies with undetectable mass by prenatal ultrasound.

Objective To study the clinical significance of chromosome karyotyping in pregnant women with a history of abnormal pregnancy. Methods The fetal chromosome karyotypes of 1 193 pregnant women with a history of abnormal pregnancy in Peking University First Hospital from January 4, 2005 to December 31, 2013 were analyzed. According to the etiology of their previous abnormal pregnancy, these women were divided into four groups: 273 women had children with inherited metabolic disorders or single-gene genetic diseases (group A), 81 women had children or fetuses with chromosome abnormalities (group B), eight cases had an abnormal chromosomal karyotype in either husband or wife (group C), and 833 women had abnormal pregnancy of unknown causes(group D). Results Forty-eight [4.0%(48/1 193)] and fetuses were found to have abnormal chromosomal karyotypes, including 26 cases of chromosome polymorphism variations and 22 cases of numerical and structural abnormalities (four cases of trisomy 21, four cases of numerical sex chromosome abnormalities, three cases of trisomy 18, three cases of extra small chromosome mosaicism, three cases of reciprocal translocation, one case of Robertsonian translocation, one case of chromosome six inversion between the arms, one case of chromosome three inversion between the arms, one case of mosaicism of trisomy 14 and one case of structural abnormality of chromosome 14). In group A, four cases (1.5%) of chromosomal abnormalities of clinical significance and four cases of chromosome polymorphism variations were detected. Meanwhile, 61 fetuses with inherited metabolic disorders or single-gene genetic diseases and two cases of gene mutation carriers were detected in group A, but among whom, there were no abnormal chromosome karyotype cases. In group B, two cases (2.5%) of chromosomal abnormalities were found. In group C, two cases (2/8) of reciprocal translocation were found, whose karyotypes were the same as the parents. In group D, three cases of trisomy 21, three cases of trisomy 18, two cases of extra small chromosome mosaicism and two cases of numerical sex chromosome abnormalities were found. All the mothers in this group were of advanced age. Four cases of structural abnormalities and 22 cases of chromosome polymorphism variations were also found in this group, chromosomal analysis was subsequently performed in those couples, and found that the abnormal chromosomal karyotypes in the fetuses were the same as those in the parents. Conclusions Appropriate prenatal cell genetic diagnostic methods should be chosen according to the causes of abnormal pregnancy history.
