Objective To evaluate the effect of peer educatio n program by the application of the peer education on human immunodeficiency vir us/aeguired immune deficiency syndrome(HIV/AIDS) prevention and the analysis of the change on knowledge, attitude and behavior about HIV/AIDS among technical sc hool students in Shanghai. Methods Three technical schools in Shanghai were selected randomly. Two classes of each school were selected randomly as education group and the students added up to 284.Two hundred and sixty-one students of another 2 classes in each school were selected as the interior control group. Some freshmen came from medical un iversity were carefully trained as peer educators to conduct the education inclu ding 6 models. The same questionnaires were carried before and after the educati on in both groups. Results After peer education the score of average knowledge abo ut reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, STD was significantly higher than before (P 0.05). Conclusions The conduction of the peer education on HIV/AIDS pr evention among technical school students is effective in promoting the knowledge level, but the change of attitude and behavior is a long term. So we highly adv ocate that not only the health education for HIV/AIDS especially safe sex shall be given and strengthened among technical school students in order to promote t he notion of self-protection but also the conception of care others especially t he HIV/AIDS. Objective To evaluate the performance of polymerase chain reaction (PCR)‐based rapid detection of methicillin‐resistant S .aureus (MRSA) from the respiratory specimens of ICU patients in comparison with conventional sputum culture . Methods We collected 3 respiratory specimens from each patient simultaneously for bacterial culture ,fungal culture and PCR‐based detection of MRSA .The performance of the established PCR method was compared with the results of sputum culture in terms of sensitivity ,specificity ,positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) .Results The sensitivity , specificity ,PPV and NPV of PCR assay were 88 .9% ,73 .6% ,36 .4% ,and 97 .5% ,respectively ,which were lower than the reported results of PCR assay with nasal swabs .Conclusions The utility of PCR assay for active screening of MRSA from respiratory specimens still needs further supportive data .However ,PCR assay is somewhat informative in excluding MRSA infection or colonization because of its high NPV .

Aim To investigate the influence of iridosides of cornus officinalis(ICO) on morphology, cell cycle and oxidative stress of glomerular mesangial cells(GMC) cultured with advanced glycation end products(AGEs). Methods GMC were incubated in culture medium containing AGEs in the presence of ICO and aminoguanidin for 48 hours. At the same time, the control and model groups were added. Then the cultured GMC were stained by mixed fluorescence liquid and observed under fluorescence microscope. Cell cycle of GMC were analyzed using flowcytometry. The content of MDA, activity of SOD and GSH-Px in GMC supernatant were measured. The level of ROS was detected using flowcytometry. Result Morphology analysis showed that the morphology and structure of normal GMC were normal. The structure of most cells in AGEs were unclear, cell counts increased largely and they grow intensively. Cell cycle analysis showed that cell percentage of S phase increased and G_0/G_1 reduced. The level of ROS, MDA remarkably increased, and SOD, GSH-Px activity reduced. When the ICO were added, cell morphology tended to be basically normal and cell counts decreased, the percentale of S phase also decreased. The level of ROS, MDA and the SOD, GSH-Px activity restored in comparison with the model groups. Conclusion ICO can prevent the cultured GMC from lesion caused by AGEs. ICO may protect GMC from AGES to retard the progression of diabetic nepropathy by partially inhibiting the occurrence of oxidative stress.

Objective To speculate the precipitating factors, clinical features and histopathological changes in patients with granuloma annulare (GA).Methods A study was performed in 53 patients with GA . Results The incidence of female was more prevalent than male in our study. The exposure of sunlight was found more relatedly in GGA than LGA.The onset age of GGA was inclined to be elder and GGA seemed to last longer. The histopathological study showed that palisading granuloma pattern accounted for 71.7% in all patients, and scattered histiocytic infiltration accounted for 28.3%.Such as cryotherapy, topical steroids were used for LGA and systemic administration was an alternative to GGA. Conclusions Ultraviolet may be associated with the development of generalized GA. The most common pattern is the palisading granuloma though the histopathological changes were variable.Topical therapy is effective in LGA,while the systemic therapy is mainly used for GGA.

Objective To assess the applicability of the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD)formula to kidney function impaired Chinese diabetic patients. Methods Glomerular filtration rates(GFRs)in 463 Chinese diabetic patients(219 female,244 male, aged 14 to 88)were estimated by measuring ~(99m)Tc-DTPA clearance and with equations based on serum creatinine(Scr)and cystatin C(Cys C)concentrations.GFRs derived from various equations were compared with the ~(99m)Tc-DTPA clearance GFRs and their relative accuracies were assessed with ROC analysis. All the Scr measurements were performed with both the Roche enzymatic assay and the Beckman LX20 kinetic alkaline picrate assay, and Cys C with immunonephelometric and immunoturbidimetric assays. Results The reciprocals of Cys C and Scr were linearly correlated with ~(99m)Tc-DTPA clearance GFRs(r=0.830 and 0.690,repectively).The correlation of GFR with Scr could be expressed by an adjusted MDRD equation:GFR [ ml?(min?1.73 m~2)~(-1)]=175?(Scr)~(-1.154)?(age)~(-0.203)?0.742(female)?0.827,where 0.827 was a coefficient for Chinese. The adjusted equation showed a better accuracy than the MDRD equation(areas under the ROC curve 0.818 vs 0.644).The adjusted equation was also more accurate than equations obtained in previous Chinese studies.GFRs were also estimated by using Cys(in mg/L)with the following equation:GFR [ ml?(min?1.73 m~2)~(-1)] = 63.24?(Cys C)~(-0.3378).The accuracy of the Cys equation was similar to the Scr equation,or better in patients aged 60 and above. The Roche enzymatic results which were traceable to the isotope dilution mass spectrometry(IDMS)methods were significantly lower than Beckman LX20 results, but the results were closely correlated with each other(Y = 0.94X-0.02).When non-traceable Scr results were used, the coefficient needed to be adjusted. Conclusions GFRs can be estimated with equations based on either Scr or Cys C.GFR estimation should use standardized Scr results and take into account ethnic effects.

Objective To determine the neuronal damage or loss and gliosis at the cellular level in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3/Machado-Joseph disease(SCA3/MJD), and evaluate the potential use of neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and protein S 100 B(S100B) serum concentrations as biochemical markers. Methods Serum concentrations of NSE and S100B were measured in 102 SCA3/MJD patients and 100 healthy subjects matched by sex and age. The correlations between both markers and age, age of onset, disease duration, CAG repeat size, scores of international cooperative ataxia rating scale(ICARS), and scale for the assessment and rating of ataxia(SARA) were analyzed. Results Compared with the healthy controls, patients with SCA3/MJD had higher NSE serum concentrations [(6.95±2.83)ng/mL vs (4.83±1.70) ng/mL, P<0.05] and higher S100B serum concentrations [(0.07±0.06) ng/mL vs (0.05±0.02) ng/mL, P<0.05]. In the SCA3/MJD patients group, NSE levels presented a positive correlation with age, disease duration, ICARS scores and SARA scores, whereas S100B levels did not correlate with age, age of onset, disease duration, ICARS scores and SARA scores. CAG repeat size did not correlate with the NSE levels and S100B levels in different age groups of SCA3/MJD patients. Conclusion Serum NSE might be a useful marker to monitor disease progression and represent the degree of severity of a certain disease. Elevated S100B serum concentrations in patients compared to healthy controls may suggest an application of this protein as a peripheral marker of brain impairment in SCA3/MJD.
