Objective: The current study was designed to investigate the role of foods such as fish juice, pickles, bacon, salted fish, smoked food, fruit and vegetables in the etiology of esophageal cancer in Chaoshan region of China. Method: A large case-control study was conducted to investigate 1248 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus and 1248 controls matched by sex and age. Results: After adjusting for the effects of occupation, areas of residence, income, alcohol, cigarette and tea, a strong association with a clear dose-response was observed between the frequencies of fish juice eating and esophageal cancer (P<0.01), and the relative risk for women was 23.5 and for men was 3.1, respectively. The results for pickles were similar to fish juice. A protective effect of fruits on esophageal cancer was observed both in women (OR=0.13) and in men (OR=0.46), and the risk was decreased (P< 0.01) as frequencies of fruits eating was increased. The risks were significantly higher in bacon and salted fish consumers than that in non-consumer, but the dose-response relationship was not significant. No significant effects, however, were detected in vegetables and smoked food consumption. Conclusions:To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report on relationship between the fish juice and high risk of esophageal cancer in population. Further epidemiological and experiment study are required to find a biological causal relationship between them.

Chinese Medical Journal 2015;128(3):348-352
BACKGROUNDTelocytes (TCs) are a novel type of interstitial cells, which have been recently described in a large variety of cavitary and noncavitary organs. TCs have small cell bodies, and remarkably thin, long, and moniliform prolongations called telopodes (Tps). Until now, TCs have been found in various loose connective tissues surrounding the arterioles, venules, and capillaries, but as a histological cellular component, whether TCs exist in large arteries remains unexplored.
METHODSTCs were identified by transmission electron microscope in the aortic arch of male C57BL/6 mice.
RESULTSTCs in aortic arch had small cell bodies (length: 6.06-13.02 μm; width: 1.05-4.25 μm) with characteristics of specific long (7.74-39.05 μm), thin, and moniliform Tps; TCs distributed in the whole connective tissue layer of tunica adventitia: TCs in the innermost layer of tunica adventitia, located at the juncture between media and adventitia, with their long axes oriented parallel to the outer elastic membrane; and TCs in outer layers of tunica adventitia, were embedded among transverse and longitudinal oriented collagen fibers, forming a highly complex three-dimensional meshwork. Moreover, desmosomes were observed, serving as pathways connecting neighboring Tps. In addition, vesicles shed from the surface of TCs into the extracellular matrix, participating in some biological processes.
CONCLUSIONSTCs in aorta arch are a newly recognized complement distinct from other interstitial cells in large arteries, such as fibroblasts. And further biologically functional correlations need to be elucidated.

Chinese Journal of Oncology 2007;29(8):570-574
OBJECTIVEThe aim of this study was to detect the expression of livin in human gastric carcinoma and analyze the relationship between livin expression and cliniopathologic features. To explore the feasibility of small interference RNA (siRNA) in inhibition of livin gene expression and to investigate the apoptosis susceptibility of SGC-7901 cells by siRNA-mediated silencing of the livin gene.
METHODSThe expression of livin at mRNA and protein levels were determined by RT-PCR and Western blot assay, respectively. The relationship between livin expression and clinicopathologic features was analyzed. Two siRNAs specifically targeting livin gene were designed and synthesized in vitro, and were transfected into the gastric cancer SGC-7901 cells. The expression of livin mRNA was assayed by RT-PCR. Cell growth state and 50% inhibition concentration (IC50) of 5-Fu and cisplatin on SGC-7901 cells were determined by MTT method. Cell apoptosis was assessed by flow cytometry (FCM).
RESULTSThe expressions of livin mRNA and protein were detected in 19 of 40 gastric carcinoma cases (47.5%). No expression of livin was detected in tumor-adjacent tissues and benign gastric lesion. A positive correlation was found between livin expression and poor differentiation as well as lymph node metastases (P < 0.05). The level of livin mRNA was decreased in the SGC-7901 cells transfected by si-livin1 for 48 hours, with inhibition of cell growth. IC50 of si-livin-treated SGC-7901 cells to 5-Fu and cisplatin was decreased (P < 0.05) and the cells were more susceptible to proapoptotic stimuli (5-Fu and cisplatin) than control groups (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONLivin is overexpressed in gastric carcinoma with a correlation to tumor differentiation and lymph node metastasis, suggesting that it may be as one of molecular prognostic factors for some cases of gastric cancer. SiRNA can inhibit livin expression of SGC-7901 cells and induce cell apoptosis. Livin might serve as a new target for apoptosis-inducing therapy of gastric cancer. Livin;
