Chinese Journal of Prevention and Control of Chronic Diseases 2006;0(02):-
Objective To understand the personality and self-rated health status and the relationship between them in medical students. Methods By multi-stage cluster random sampling, 878 medical students were selected to investigate the personality by Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised (Short Scale For Chinese) and the health status by self-rated health measurement scale (SRHMS1.0). Results The score of L dimension among male and female medical students was significantly higher than that of nation- wide young population. The scores of E, N and P dimensions had no significant difference between them. The score of P dimension of male students was significantly higher than that of female students. The score of students' SRHMS was 339.28?41.19, which was higher than that of general population in China. The score of physical health subscale among male and female students was 144.90?11.41 and 142.73?11.36, respectively (t=2.829, P=0.005). The scores of SRHMS and its three subscales were significantly different in medical students with different personality traits except the score of physical health subscale in students with different grades of P dimension. The scores of E and L dimensions had significantly positive correlation with SRHMS, and the scores of N and P dimensions had significantly negative correlation with SRHMS. Conclusion The personality traits of medical students were remarkably influenced on their self-rated health. To encourage medical students to reform the wholesome personality will be helpful to their health.

Objective To explore the clinical features of pulmonary tuberculosis complicated with DM and related factors. Method The manifestations of 87 newly diagnosed PTB patients with type 2 DM(DM-PTB group) at two hospitals in Tianjin during October 2003 to October 2004 were compared to 88 PTB patients without DM who were randomly choosen from the same hosipital. The factors related to sputum-positive TB or cavity were explored through unconditional logistic regression model. Results DM-PTB patients showed significanly lower frequencies of cough(66.7% vs 83.0%),toxicity symptoms(37.9% vs 62.5%) and haemoptysis(16.1% vs 33.0%) than those of PTB group.Positive-sputum(63.2% vs 34.1%),cavity(56.3% vs 13.6%),wide lesions and bilateral lesions on chest radiographs was more common in DM-PTB group than in PTB one.Introversion(OR=1.582, 95%CI:1.063 ~2.355),type 2 DM(OR =2.186,95% CI:1.082 ~4.420)and cavity(OR =2.793,95% CI:1.308 ~5.964)were factors independently associated with positive-sputum TB.The factors related to cavity included diabetes(OR=14.199,95%CI:5.376~ 37.501),cough,postive sputum and lore-up lobe lesion. Conclusion This study confirmed that clinical manifestations and chest radiographs of PTB patients complicated with type 2 DM significantly departed from the typical presentation.Type 2 DM seems to have a negative effect on postive-sputum and cavity. So it should be alarmed that DM-PTB patients who tend to have untypical clinical symptom and higher rate of positive sputum become the reservoirs of infection to cause the transmission of TB.

Objective: To observe the clinical efficacy of acupuncture plus navel acupuncture for patients with urinary retention after radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer. Methods: A total of 64 patients with urinary retention after radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer was divided into a navel acupuncture group (22 cases), an acupuncture group (18 cases) and an acupuncture plus navel acupuncture group (24 cases). All three groups received bladder function training and neuromuscular electrical stimulation. In addition, navel points were combined in the navel acupuncture group. Electroacupuncture was conducted to Qihai (CV 6), Zhongji (CV 3), Dahe (KI 12), Shuidao (ST 28), Ciliao (BL 32) and Huiyang (BL 35) in the acupuncture group. The acupuncture plus navel acupuncture group received both treatments. The catheter was removed after 3 d of treatment. Spontaneous urination, residual urine volume, urinary catheter dependence and recurrence after 3 d, 6 d and 9 d of treatment in each group were observed, respectively. Results: In the acupuncture plus navel acupuncture group, the markedly effective rates after 3 d, 6 d and 9 d of treatment were significantly higher than those in the navel acupuncture group and the acupuncture group; the urinary catheter dependence was lower than that of the other two groups, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05, P<0.01); the spontaneous urination time was shorter than that of the navel acupuncture group and the acupuncture group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05, P<0.01); the residual urine volume was significantly less than that of the navel acupuncture group and the acupuncture group, and the differences were statistically significant (both P<0.01). After the catheter was removed, recurrence was observed from the next day after spontaneous urination was resumed. There were 2 cases of recurrence in the navel acupuncture group, 2 cases in the acupuncture group and 1 case in the acupuncture plus navel acupuncture group. The recurrence rate of the acupuncture plus navel acupuncture group was significantly lower than that of the navel acupuncture group and the acupuncture group (both P<0.01). Conclusion: Acupuncture plus navel acupuncture has satisfactory efficacy for urinary retention after radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer. It can significantly shorten the urinary retention time, reduce the patient's dependence on urinary catheter, and reduce the residual urine volume.

In order to prepare the recombinant vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) using intein mediated rapid purification system, the cDNA encoding the recombinant VIP was designed and synthesized according to the preference of E.coli, and then was cloned into the expression vector PTWIN. The recombinant plasmid PTWIN-VIP was transformed into expression host E.coli strain ER2566.The fusion protein consisting of the recombinant VIP,intein and chitin binding domain was expressed and purified by chitin affinity chromatography. The target peptide was released from the fusion protein by changing the temperature and the pH of the cleavage buffer. The molecular weight of the recombinant VIP was determined by the mass spectrometry and the results was conformity with the theoretical value. The preliminary bioactivity assay indicated that the recombinant VIP decreased the serum resistin levels significantly in LPS-induced acute inflammation. The preparation and the characterization of anti-inflammatory effects of the recombinant VIP layed the foundation for its further application.
