OBJECTIVES: The object of this study was to help the clinicians understand the characteristics of the sailors who were admitted to the psychiatric ward through elucidating the transition in the psychiatric aspect of them. METHODS: The results obtained from psychiatric records of 98 sailors who were admitted to department of psychiatry in a general hospital, from March 1, 1985 to Feb. 28, 1994 were compared with the results obtained from 34 sailor inpatients in the same hospital from March 1, 1982 to Feb. 28, 1985. RESULTS: 1) The number of sailor inpatients showed declining tendency and the age of them showed increasing tendency. 2) The number of patients of somatoform disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and organic mental disorder was increased. The number of patients of schizophrenia and mood disorder was decreased. 3) The proportion of inpatients from overseas fishing ship was increased markedly. We must ave a countplan and careful consideration f3r them. 4) We could infer that the groups of low education, crew, overseas fishing ship and below S year of employment duration had high admitted patient occurrence rate. The proportion of psychosis in the groups that were primitive school graduated and 1-5 year of employment duration was high relatively to neurosis(statistically not significant). 5) According to psychological test, the majority of sailor inpatients had constricted thought content, emphasis of responsibility for the family, submissive attitude to an authoritive figure and paranoid tendency. The MMFI profile of neurotic patients showed the tendency of finking bad.

2.Ontology Technology in Medical Informatics.
Journal of Korean Society of Medical Informatics 2003;9(3):213-219
The main purpose of this paper is to overview the current issues in the area of medical ontology. Ontology technology in Medical Informatics is evolved from the three different research areas: namely, web application for the Semantic Web, Knowledge Representation in Artificial Intelligence, and medical terminology system. In this paper we provide possible research agenda concerning medical ontology development from the above three perspectives at the same time.

Journal of the Korean Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine 2006;10(2):121-125
A 48-year-old man presented with a dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) of the scalp associated with local recurrence. Axial T1- and T2-weighted images demonstrated a well-circumscribed hypointense and intermediate hyperintense mass in the skin and subcutaneous layer of the scalp, respectively. Contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images showed the strongly enhanced mass invasion to the skin, subcutaneous layer and adjacent galeal layer. Scalp DFSP is very uncommon but is an aggressive tumor, so MR imaging diagnosis of the extent of the lesion to underlying structures, and initial wide local resection is important to prevent recurrence.

Journal of Korean Neuropsychiatric Association 2001;40(1):151-156
Mirtazapine-a newly developed drug with reduce adverse effects and toxicity of original antidepre-ssants-has been known to have antidepressant effect by enhancing the transmission of norepinephrine and serotonin via blockade of alpha2-noradrenergic autoreceptor and heteroreceptor and to have common side effects such as sedation, weight gain, and dizziness. We report a case of 50 years old female depressive patient who developed mirtazapine-associated hyperglycemia during treatment with mirtazapine and returned to normal glucose level after stopping the usage of mirtazapine. In patients who receive drugs with the risk of hyperglycemia and diabetes mellitus, we should consider the evaluation for diabetes mellitus and follow it up carefully in the future.

9.The second molars in orthodontics.

Korean Journal of Orthodontics 1989;19(3):49-58
The permanent second molars, erupted about 12-13 years old, are finally erupted except wisdom teeth. Although they are likely to be excluded in the orthodontic treatment because located in the most posterior area of the dentition, about twenty percents of the orthodontic patients have abnormal occlusion of the permanent second molars, and we usually observed the malalignrnent of the permanent second molars in the finished case without including this teeth. These permanent second molars should be necessarily corrected by orthodontic appliances for the dynamic-normal occlusion. Moreover, according to the previously mentioned treatment philosophy, there are clear advantages in the cases which the permanent second molars were used for anchorage source, and this has been proposed convincingly by many authers. Therefore it is reasonable that orthodontists determine to include the permanent second molars among orthodontic treatment, but particular cases.

Korean Journal of Anatomy 1997;30(3):269-284
It is highly desirable to achieve optimal reproductive performance, reliable morphological and physiological basic data of the reproductive organs. Therefore, seasonal changes in serum testosterone, LH, and FSH concentrations, and morphological changes in testicular epithelial cells were studied in the Korean native pheasant throughout the annual cycle. Mature male pheasants[14-16 months after hatching] were used in this study. The general morphological changes of the epithelia of the seminiferous tubules were observed by dibasic stain, and semithin section from Epon blocks with a phase contrast microscopy. The ultrastructural changes of the the epithelia of the seminiferous tubules were investigated by ultrathin section with transmission electron microscope. The changes in the profiles of the serum FSH, LH, and testosterone concentratioins were measured by RIA[radioimmunoassay]. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. There was little variation in the average diameter of the seminiferous tubules from autumn[67.13+/-5.95micrometer] to winter[68.59+/-6.07micrometer], but the highest levels were reached in spring[192.78+/-41.58micrometer]. Thereafter, the diameter decreased slowly in summer[146.57+/-43.68micrometer], then decreased significantly in autumn[67.13+/-5.95micrometer]. 2. Serum testosterne concentration was low from autumn[13.+/-7.21ng/100ml] to winter[17.39+/-13.75ng/100ml], but the highest levels were reached in spring[127.72+/-66.47 ng/100ml]. Thereafter, the concentration was lowest in autumn[13.+/-7.21ng/100ml]. 3. Serum LH concentration increased slowly and linealy from autumn[5.04+/-1.04ng/100ml] to winter[6.23+/-1.08ng/100ml], but the highest levels were reached in spring[11.3+/-3.6 ng/100ml]. Thereafter, the concentration reached the lowest level in autumn[5.04+/-1.04 ng/100ml]. 4. Serum FSH concentration was low from autumn[4.65+/-0.63ng/100ml] to winter[4.2+/-0.98ng/100ml], but the highest levels were reached in spring[17.41+/-8.35ng/100ml]. Thereafter, concentration was the lowest in autumn[4.65+/-0.63ng/100ml]. 5. The seminiferous tubules showed the onset of the spermatongenic cycle in spring but the seminiferous tubules collected in summer exhibited partially degenerative changes. 6. The cytoplasmic process of Sertoli cells of the seminiferous tubules of the pheasant were collected in summer. Many vesicles and degeneratiye changes were included but many number of spermatozoa were embedded partially in the multivesicular bodies in these processes. 7. The diameter of the seminiferous tubules of the pheasant narrowed markedly in autumn, and atrophied in winter. The spermatogonia and Sertoli cells were arranged in monolayer. 8. The myelin figures in the cytoplasmic process of Sertoli cells of the seminiferous tubules of the pheasant in autumn. The nucleus of the Sertoli cells were of a round configuration elongated and oriented perpendicularly to the basement membrane. The results obtained provide basic data for reproductive physiology and are useful for studying the male genital organs of the Korean native pheasant. Structural changes of the seminiferous epithelial cells significantly and postively correlated with serum FSH, LH. The correlation of changes in the hormonal status with alterations of Sertoli cell organells precedes the breeding season.
