The corneal transparency is one of the important basic conditions for realizing normal physiological functions of visual organs. Also corneal endothelial cells are important conditions for maintaining normal corneal transparency. Therefore, only to ensure the morphology and physiological integrity of the corneal endothelial, can have normal vision. However, intraocular surgeries inevitably cause damage to corneal endothelial cells. This paper will review the effects of glaucoma surgery on corneal endothelial cells.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the efficacy mechanisme of chicory extract interventing abdominal obesity rat from the aspect of gut bacteria.
METHODMale SD rats were randomly divided into five groups, namely the normal group, model group, large and small dose group of chicory and the fenofibrate group. Normal group was given deionized water, the other group was given fructose water and give the medical treatment of chicory and fenofibrate. Assay triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL and HDL by biochemical methods and measure body weight and abdominal circumference and microscopicly observe the count changes of gut bacteria through real-time PCR method.
RESULTCompared with normal group, the triglyceride level and abdominal circumference were significantly higher (P < 0.05), weight and high-density lipoprotein increased but no significant changes and E. coli, lactobacillus increased significantly. Compared with model group, chicory extract large and small dose group and the fenofibrate group can significantly reduce triglyceride levels (P < 0.05), reduce the number of E. coli and Lactobacillus and increase the number of bifidobacteria. The fenofibrate group can significantly reduce total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein levels.
CONCLUSIONThe chicory's treatment effect on abdominal obesity is significant. The efficacy mechanisme intervention abdominal obesity may be related to the reduction of the number of lactic acid bacteria and E. coli and the increase of bifidobacteria.

AIM:To study the visual acuity and refractive status of students pupils and middle school students in Shenzhen, and to provide a scientific basis for the prevention and control of myopia.
METHODS:A cluster sampling method was used to select five primary school students(6 737) and three junior middle school students(1 925) from Shenzhen. The visual acuity, anterior segment, fundus, eye position, and refractive status were measured. Information on associated factors for poor vision were also obtained using a questionaire. The risk factors of poor vision and the rate of myopia between grade or gender were analysed by Chi-square test.
RESULTS:The rate of poor vision was 67. 0%. Female, family history of high myopia, long time of continuous look near, short time of outdoor activities were the main risk factors. The rate of emmetropia, hyperopia, astigmatism and myopia were 15. 1%, 11. 3%, 11. 0% and 62. 6% respectively. Emmetropia, hyperopia and astigmatism incidenece rate decreased with age growing, but myopia incidence rate was increased. There were significant differences between adjacent two grades in myopia(χ2=7. 338-45. 018, P<0. 05 ) except the primary grade six and the junior grade one. There were significant differences between boys ( 61. 0%) and girls ( 65. 5%) in myopia(χ2=17. 180, P<0. 05).
CONCLUSION:The rate of poor vison is pretty high in students of Shenzhen aged between 5 to 16 years old, and myopia is the main reason. The development rate of myopia is increased with age. Early management of myopia may play an important role in controlling poor vision in students.

The potential of Rhizobium sp. N613 to produce the exopolysaccharide (REPS) was studied in this paper. Using an orthogonal design in a flask-shaker culture system, the fermentation medium and conditions of synthesizing REPS were optimized. Based on these results, the fermentation kinetic parameters were obtained in the batch fermentation with a 10L fermentor. The REPS yield of 11.31g/L was achieved by metabolic regulation during 40 h fed-batch fermentation. Transplanted tumor models of sarcoma 180 in mice were used to evaluate the anti-tumor effect. The result of anti-tumor activities showed that inhibition rate was 53.40%, when dose of REPS was 5mg/kg. These results indicate that REPS has the following properties: the short duration of fermentation, the high yield, the low cost, the effective immunocompetence and thickening. Thus, REPS has the value of development and application.

Genomics, Proteomics & Bioinformatics 2005;3(4):206-212
DNA sequences can be treated as finite-length symbol strings over a four-letter alphabet (A, C, T, G). As a universal and computable complexity measure, LZ complexity is valid to describe the complexity of DNA sequences. In this study, a concept of conditional LZ complexity between two sequences is proposed according to the principle of LZ complexity measure. An LZ complexity distance metric between two nonnull sequences is defined by utilizing conditional LZ complexity.Based on LZ complexity distance, a phylogenetic tree of 26 species of placental mammals (Eutheria) with three outgroup species was reconstructed from their complete mitochondrial genomes. On the debate that which two of the three main groups of placental mammals, namely Primates, Ferungulates, and Rodents, are more closely related, the phylogenetic tree reconstructed based on LZ complexity distance supports the suggestion that Primates and Ferungulates are more closely related.

Objective To investigate the polymorphisms of CD28 and COS genes in chromosome 2q33 region and susceptibility to and severity of multiple sclerosis (MS).Methods Eighty-three patients diagnosed as having MS from Han population of South China were studied; one hundred and ten patients with non-autoimmune diseases or healthy volunteers were selected as controls.DNA was obtained from peripheral venous blood; the polymorphisms of amplified productions (CD28 and ICOS genes) were detected by PCR-RFLP and analyzed by agarose gel electrophoresis.Immunofluorescent two-color flow cytometry was used to study the expressions of CD28 and ICOS genes of lymphocytes in the peripheral blood of these 2 groups. Results The genotype frequency of TT at ICOS-2394 site in patients with MS (33.7%) was significantly higher than that in controls (10.9%,P< 0.05), and the allele frequency of T in patient group (56.0%) was obviously higher than that in the controls (30.9%, P<0.05). No marked combined effects were noted in the 3 SNPs (CD28-372, ICOS-2349 and ICOS-2119). TT genotype in the polymorphic site of ICOS-2394 was correlated to primary progressive MS, while CT genotype in the polymorphic site of ICOS-2394 was not correlated to secondary progressive MS. The genotype and allele frequencies of the 3 SNPs had no marked association with the severity of MS (P>0.05). The levels of CD28 and ICOS gene expressions in lymphocytes of peripheral blood of patients with MS were significantly higher in patients than that in control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion ICOS polymorphisms might be related to MS in Han population of South China, which suggests that ICOS might be one of genes having susceptibility to MS. No association between CD28 gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to MS is noted.
