Yeungnam University Journal of Medicine 1986;3(1):179-183
The frozen section technique is a means of intraoperative pathological diagnosis, and a procedure of great value to the surgeon. This method should be accurate, rapid and reliable. This method serves useful purposes, such as determining the presence of tumor, its type (especially whether it is benign or malignant), the adequacy of a biopsy of a suspected lesion, and the conditions of the surgical margins. But, it bears many disadvantages, the most of which is the danger of incorrect diagnosis. We studied the indications, the limitations, and the accuracy of the frozen section method and the materials studies was total of frozen section diagnosis of 809 cases was 98.1% with 0.5% of false negative, 0% of false positive 0.5% of incorrect histological diagnosis or grading errors, and 0.9% of deferred cases. The tissues submitted were lymph node, gastrointestinal tract, skin subcutaneous tissues in decreasing oder of frequency. The false positive case is not present, while the false negative cases were 4.

Clinical and histopathological studies were made on 202 cases of malignancy of cervix, that were visited to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Yeungnam University Hospital, during 5 years from 1983 to 1987. The results were summarized as follows. 1. Malignancies of the uterine cervix were 10% of total female malignancies. 2. Among 202 cases, 195 cases (96.5%) were squamous cell carcinoma, in which 60 cases (30.0%) of carcinoma in situ, 9 cases (4%) of microinvasive, and 126 cases (62.5%) of invasive carcinoma were included. 3. The average age of the patients with squamous cell carcinoma was 49.4 years old; In case of carcinoma in situ, it was 43.8, microinvasive, 40.0, invasive 52.1 years old. 4. Clinical symptoms of the patient with squamous cell carcinoma in order of frequency were as follows; vaginal bleeding (47.5%), abnormal cytology (15.4%), and abnormal vaginal discharge (9.4%). 5. Duration of the chief complaints was most commonly less than 6 months (73.2%), and the average duration was 3.8 months. 6. The most common age of marriage was between 19 to 22 years old (46.5%). The average was 21.5 years old. 7. The gravity was 51.5% in 5-8 times, and average 6.2 times. The parity was 61.9% in 1-4 times, and average 3.9 times. 8. The subdivision of 126 cases of invasive carcinoma was made according to FIGO stage classification, stage I, 40 cases (31.8%), stage II, 54 cases(42.9%), stage III, 11 cases (8.7%), and stage IV, 8 cases (6.3%). 9. The histologic subtypes of invasive squamous cell carcinoma were distributed as follows; large cell keratinizing type, 25 cases (19.8%), large cell nonkeratinizing type, 101 cases (80.2%). 10. In the cytologic diagnosis, class I was 2 cases (1.9%), class II was 16 cases (15.1%), class III was 33 cases (31.1%), class IV was 31 cases (29.3%), class V was 24 cases (24.6%). 11. The frequency of lymph node metastasis was 7.5% in stage I, and 11.1% in stage II.

The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1989;24(6):1686-1695
The spinal injuries were classified into bursting fracture, fracture-dislocation, seat-belt injury, compression fracture according to the three column theory by Denis. The bursting fracture and fracture-dislocation required the most careful planning. So, myelography, computerized tomography enabled us to diagnose the spinal fracture including retropulsed bony fragment into the spinal canal. There was much controversy as to appropriate treatment af unstable thoraco-lumbar fractures. The frequent surgical treatment of thoraco-lumbar spinal fractures was still posterior spinal instrumentation including Harrington rod system. Since 1964, the use of anterior spinal instrumentation had been started by Dwyer, Dunn, Kostrik, Slot, and Zielke used anterior spinal instrumentation in unstable thoraco-lumbar spinal fractures, but not popular. This study suggested the experience to accomplish the decompression of the neural elements and stabilization of the spine by using Kandea device in unstable thoraco-lumbar spinal fractures. 12 patients treated with this Kaneda device in unstable thoraco-lumbar spinal fractures were analyzed from Dec. 1988 to May, 1989 at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Ewha Womans University Hospital. We obtained the following conclusions. The results were as follows. 1. The common injury mechanism was falling down in 5 cases, the frequent injury site was 1st lumbar vertebra. 2. According to Denis classification, the bursting fractures were in 8 cases(68% ), the fracture-dislocations were in 4 cases(33%). 3. The average preoperative kyphotic angulation was 24.5 degrees(range 8 to 45) and postoperative angulation was 5 degrees(range 2 to 15), the correction rate was 79.6% and correction degree was average 19.5 degrees. 4. The advantages were the fixation of one level above and below the injury site, sufficient neural decompression, firm spinal stabilization, early mobilization with a brace and elimination of the 2nd posterior procedure. 5. The fixation of vertebral plate was difficult due to the invariable size of vertebral plates, especially, in upper thoracic spinal fracture and children's fracture.

This study describes an evaluation of the sonographic, cholangiographic, pathological, and immunological findings, and the protective effect shown by rats reinfected with Clonorchis sinensis. Eight experimental rat groups were, namely, a normal control, a primary infection control, a reinfection I (reinfection 7 week after treatment following 3-week infection), a reinfection II (reinfection 2 week after treatment following 8-week infection), a reinfection III (exploration of the intrahepatic bile ducts 1 week after reinfection 4 week after treatment following 4-week infection), a superinfection, a secondary infection control, and an infection following immunization group. Sonographic and cholangiographic findings showed moderate or marked dilatation of the bile duct confluence in the primary infection control, reinfection II, and secondary infection control groups. Juvenile worms survived in the intrahepatic bile ducts 1 week after reinfection following treatment in the reinfection III group. It was concluded that reinfecting juvenile worms found during the first week following reinfection failed to survive or grow further. Anatomical, pathophysiological, or immunological changes may induce protection from reinfection in rats.

The Korean Journal of Parasitology 2004;42(4):169-174
This study was carried out to find out specific proteins from different organs of Clonorchis sinensis. Crude extract, organ-specific and excretory-secretory (ES) proteins were analyzed by immunoblot with infected human sera. The bands of 7- and 17-kDa were main component of intestinal fluid and ES protein and commonly found in all organspecific proteins. The 17-kDa protein was observed from ES antigen, intestinal fluid, eggs and sperms, 26- and 28- kDa proteins were from the uterus, vitellaria, and ovary, and 34-, 37-, 43- and 50-kDa proteins were mainly from the testis and sperms. Serum of mice immunized with sperms reacted to the 50-kDa protein by immunoblotting and immunohistochemical staining showed a positive reaction at the seminal receptacle and seminiferous tubule. The present results show that the 7-kDa protein is a common antigen of every part or organ of C. sinensis, but different organs express their specific antigenic protein bands.

8.Experience of Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy.
Hong Suk CHOI ; Young Kyung PARK
Korean Journal of Urology 1989;30(6):866-870
Sixteen patients with renal and pelvis stones were treated by eighteen percutaneous nephrolithotomy(PNL) from December, 1986 to March, 1988 in Chonbuk National University Hospital. We discussed our experience with regard to the failures and complications of PNL. With accumulation of experiences, operation efficiencies were increased from 62.6 per cent early in this series to 75.0 per cent in the recent cases. The most common cause of failure was inability to find stone because of bleeding. No patient required nephrectomy, but five patients underwent open surgery for stone removal because of unsuccessful PNL(four in kidney, one in pelvis). Major complications occurred in 7 patients ;hemorrhage in four cases, urine extravasation into the retroperitoneal cavity, colon perforation, and remnant stone in a case respectively. We concluded that percutaneous nephrolithotomy appears to be a preferable procedure to open stone surgery and a useful alternative to ESWL.
