1.Origin and development of umbilical therapy in traditional Chinese medicine.
Chinese Acupuncture & Moxibustion 2014;34(6):607-610
The origin and development of umbilical therapy in traditional Chinese medicine is explored from related literature in the history. As a result, the Shang period is regarded as initial period of umbilical therapy, while periods from Han Dynasty, Jin Dynasty and Southern-Northern Dynasties to Sui Dynasty and Tang Dynasty could be taken as stage of primary development. Time from Song Dynasty, Jin Dynasty and Yuan Dynasty to Ming and Qing Dynasties is believed as mature stage. Also the manipulation, application principle, indications and contraindications of umbilical therapy are explained. A brief overview of modern development of umbilical therapy is also described.

Medical Journal of Chinese People's Liberation Army 2001;0(08):-
To explore the effects of brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) on hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy in neonatal rats,0 2, 0 5 or 2 0?g of BDNF was injected into cerebroventricles of 7d neonatal Sprague Dawley rats with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy by ligation of left common carotid artery and 2 5h inhalation of humidified 8% O 2 +92% N 2 at 37℃. Its effects on brain edema, levels of malondialehyde (MDA) and neuronal apoptosis at the left cortex and hippocampus were observed. The results showed that brain edema was markedly alleviated in 0 5?g group compared to the vehicle group 24h after BDNF injection. Levels of MDA in the left hemisphere in 2 0?g group were significantly higher than those in either vehicle group or 0 5?g group. Neuronal apoptosis decreased to a different extent in the three groups while obviously in both 0 2?g and 0 5?g groups. It is suggested that BDNF exerts a prominent protective effect on hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy in neonatal rats, but this effect is lowered when overdose is injected.

Objective To apply a hand function laserimager to evaluate the effect of acupuncture on hand dysfunction after stroke. Meth-ods From January to June, 2016, 18 stroke patients with upper limb dysfunction were divided into control group (n=9) and acupuncture group (n=9). The control group received routine medication and rehabilitation, while the acupuncture group received acupuncture in addi-tion. They were assessed with modified Ashworth Scale (MAS), Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) of upper limb motor function and modified Bathel Index (MBI) before and after three-week treatment, while the region of interest (ROI) of their hands was tested with the hand func-tion laserimager. Results The scores of MAS and FMA improved after treatment in both groups (t>4.44, P<0.01), and improved in the score of MBI in the acupuncture group (t=3.95, P<0.01). The scores of MAS, FMA, and MBI improved more in the acupuncture group than in the control group (t>3.17, P<0.01). Meanwhile, the scores of ROI decreased in the affected hands after treatment (t>7.78, P<0.001), and de-creased more in the acupuncture group than in the control group (t=-2.23, P<0.05). No significant difference was observed in the scores of ROI of the unaffected hands (t=-0.11, P>0.05) between groups. Conclusion The hand function laserimager, which responds to the blood perfusion of the hand, can be used as a tool to evaluate the hand function.

Journal of Applied Clinical Pediatrics 1992;0(06):-
Objective To study the changes of umbilical blood lactate,pH, blood sugar(BS),bilirubin, electrolyte, osmotic pressure (OP) in the newboms with fetal distress. Methods Thirty-five newborns with fetal distress (distress group) and 40 healthy new-borns (control group) were studied. Distress group were divided into distress group Ⅰ and distress group Ⅱ respectively, based on without or with neonatal asphyxia. Concentration of umbilical blood lactate was determined with enzyme method, pH, BS,serum total bilirubin (BIL), serum electrolyte (Na+ ,K+ ,Ca2+ ) and OP were analyzed respectively. Results 1. The difference of incidence of newborn asphyxia between distress groups (29.03%) and control group (2.50%) was statistically significant. 2. Compared with the controls and distress group Ⅰ, the umbilical blood lactate concentration significantly increased in distress group Ⅱ (P 0.05).The incidence of hyperglycemia was significantly elevated in distress groups than that in the control group. 4. Lactate concentration in distress I and distress fl group showed negative correlation with pH. Conclusion The concentration of umbilical blood lactate can provide the proof for diagnosis and prognosis of fetal distress.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the effects of prenatal stress on neurological functions after middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in adult offspring rats.
METHODSPregnant rats were randomly assigned to prenatal stress treatment, which was exposed to restraint three times daily in the last week of pregnancy, and no prenatal stress treatment. Adult male offspring rats were subjected to transient focal cerebral ischemia by MCAO. They were randomly divided into four groups: sham group, prenatal stress + sham group, MCAO group and prenatal stress + MCAO group (n = 10). After 24 hours of reperfusion, the neurological deficits were evaluated. The infarct size, cell apoptosis and expression of Caspase 3, cleaved Caspase 3 and Bcl-2 were detected.
RESULTSCompared with MCAO group, the neurological deficits, infarct size and apoptotic cells in prenatal stress + MCAO group were increased significantly (all P < 0.05). The expressions of Caspase 3 and cleaved Caspase 3 were much greater in prenatal stress + MCAO group than those of MCAO group, while the expression of Bcl-2 was significantly decreased in prenatal stress + MCAO group compared with MCAO group (all P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONPrenatal stress might exacerbate neuroloeical deficits in the offspring rats after MCAO by increasing cell apoptosis.
