1.Cell Beath Induced by Ethanol : Prevention of Cell Death by the bcl-2 Proto-Oncogene.

The Bcl-2 protein has been shown to block apoptosis induced by a variety of stimuli. We have performed the experiments which cell death can be blocked by the bcl-2 proto-oncogene under moderate(50-100mM) or high ethanol treatment(400-600mM). As a result of morphological changes, and MTT assay, cell death was blocked by Bcl-2 under 100mM ethanol. However, the results of DNA fragmentation and RT-PCR(ICE, and CPP32), immunoblotting(CPP32, and PARP) for SK-pcDNA3 cells(vector only) and SK-Bcl-2 cells(stably expressed bcl-2 gene) were showen to be no significant differences between two cell lines. These result suggested that cell death induced by ethanol was not followed by apoptosis mechanism, and was blocked by the bcl-2 proto-oncogene with moderate ethanol.

2.Relationship between Food Intakes, Glycemic Index, Glycemic Load, and Body Weight among High School Boys in Seoul.

This study was conducted to study the relationship between food intakes, glycemic index (GI), glycemic load (GL), and body weight with high school boys residing in Seoul. The subjects of 329 boys were divided into normal weight group (BMI < 23 kg/m2, n = 212) and overweight group (BMI > or = 23 kg/m2, n = 117) by body mass index (BMI). The food intakes data obtained by the 3-day food record were analyzed by Can pro 3.0 software. Anthropometric measurements and physical activities were collected from each subject. Daily dietary glycemic index (DGI) and dietary glycemic load (DGL) were calculated from the 3-day food record. Body weights and BMI of normal weight group were 58.8 kg and 19.9 kg/m2 and those of overweight group were 79.2 kg and 26.8 kg/m2, which were significantly different between two groups (p < 0.05). Total food and animal food intakes of normal weight group were significantly higher than overweight group (p < 0.05), and vegetable food and other food intakes of normal weight group showed higher than overweight group. All nutrient intakes of normal weight group were higher than overweight group. Dietary fiber, calcium, potassium and folate intakes of normal weight group and overweight group were under 65% of the dietary reference intakes (DRIs). Major food sources of energy intake for both groups were rice, pork and instant noodle in order. Mean adequacy ratio (MAR), an index of overall dietary quality were 0.83 in normal weight group and 0.79 in overweight group, which showed significantly higher in normal weight group than overweight group (p < 0.05). Mean daily dietary GI of normal weight group and overweight group were 67.7 and 68.2, respectively. Mean daily dietary GL of normal weight group and overweight group were 214.6 and 202.7, respectively, and which was significantly different between the two groups (p < 0.05). Major food sources contributed to DGI and DGL were rice (> or = 55%) in both groups. DGI and DGL were not significantly correlated with anthropometric data. Activity adjusted to energy intake was negatively correlated with percentage of body fat (r =-0.1308, p < 0.01) and that was positively correlated with height (r = 0.1227, p < 0.05) and lean body mass (r = 0.1351, p < 0.05).

3.A Study on Food and Nutrient Intakes of Weekday and Weekend Among High School Boys in Seoul.

residing in Seoul using the 3-day food record. Frequency for breakfast skipping was the highest as compared with lunch and dinner skipping. Frequencies for breakfast and lunch skipping were significantly higher in weekend than weekday (p < 0.05). The daily average food, vegetable food and animal food intakes were 1,327.6 g, 800.5 g, and 425.8 g, respectively. Total food and vegetable food intakes of weekday were significantly higher than weekend (p < 0.05). The dietary variety score (DVS) was 20.5 in daily average, 23.3 in weekday and 15.1 in weekend, which showed significantly higher in weekday than weekend (p < 0.05). The daily averages of energy, protein, fat and carbohydrate intake were 2244.9 kcal, 89 g, 72.6 g, and 311.2 g, respectively. Fat intake was significantly lower and carbohydrate, fiber, phosphate, iron, sodium, potassium, vitamin A, niacin, folate, and vitamin C intakes were significantly higher in weekday than weekend (p < 0.05). The percentages of energy intake from carbohydrate, protein, and fat were 55.4%, 15.8%, 28.8% in daily average, 56.8%, 15.8%, 27.4% in weekday and 53.6%, 15.8%, 30.7% in weekend, respectively. The percentages of energy intake from carbohydrate in weekday and weekend were below 60%, and that from fat was above 27% in weekday and weekend. Carbohydrate intake was significantly higher and fat intake was significantly lower in weekday than weekend (p < 0.05). Energy intakes of daily average, weekday and weekend were above 83% as compared with estimated energy requirement (EER). Intakes of dietary fiber, calcium, potassium, vitamin C, riboflavin and folate were below 75% as compared with adequate intake (AI) or recommended intake (RI). Mean adequacy ratios (MAR), an index of overall dietary quality were 0.78 in daily average, 0.80 in weekday and 0.75 in weekend. MAR of weekend showed significantly lower than weekday (p < 0.05). This study revealed that the overall nutrient intake status was worse in weekend than weekday among high school boys.

4.Comparison of Image Quality of Shoulder CT Arthrography Conducted Using 120 kVp and 140 kVp Protocols.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the image quality of shoulder CT arthrography performed using 120 kVp and 140 kVp protocols. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-four CT examinations were prospectively included. CT scans were performed on each patient at 120 kVp and 140 kVp; other scanning parameters were kept constant. Image qualities were qualitatively and quantitatively compared with respect to noise, contrast, and diagnostic acceptability. Diagnostic acceptabilities were graded using a one to five scale as follows: 1, suboptimal; 2, below average; 3, acceptable; 4, above average; and 5, superior. Radiation doses were also compared. RESULTS: Contrast was better at 120 kVp, but noise was greater. No significant differences were observed between the 120 kVp and 140 kVp protocols in terms of diagnostic acceptability, signal-to-noise ratio, or contrast-to-noise ratio. Lowering tube voltage from 140 kVp to 120 kVp reduced the radiation dose by 33%. CONCLUSION: The use of 120 kVp during shoulder CT arthrography reduces radiation dose versus 140 kVp without significant loss of image quality.

5.A Chondroblastoma Versus a Giant Cell Tumor: Emphasis on the MR Imaging Features.

PURPOSE: To assess the MR imaging features in differentiating a chondroblastoma (CB) from a giant cell tumor (GCT), with an emphasis on the accompanying peritumoral bone marrow edema. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MR imaging findings in 20 patients with CB were compared with the imaging features of 22 patients with GCT. The location of the lesion, signal intensity, adjacent cortical change, degree of accompanying bone marrow edema, synovitis in the adjacent joint and cystic change were analyzed. The findings of CB and GCT were examined statistically with use of Fisher's exact test. RESULTS: The incidence ratios of MR imaging findings were as follows (CB:GCT). Metaphyseal dominant involvement (2:21), partial cortical disruption (2:14), extensive bone marrow edema surrounding the tumor (14:0) and synovitis in the adjacent joint (11:2) were statistically different in incidence between CB and GCT (p < 0.01). The inhomogeneous signal intensity (17:17) and cystic change (10:15) were not different in incidence between a CB and a GCT. CONCLUSION: The presence of metaphyseal dominant involvement and cortical disruption favors a diagnosis of a GCT rather than a CB. In contrast, extensive bone marrow edema surrounding the tumor and synovitis in the adjacent joint are highly indicative of a CB.

6.The Antihypertensive Efficacy, Safety, and Tolerability of Losartan Versus Fosinopril in Patients with Hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Losartan potassium, an orally active, highly selective AT (1) angiotensin II receptor inhibitor, effectively reduces blood pressure by directly blocking receptors. The purpose of this study is to compare the antihypertensive efficacy, safety and tolerability of losartan potassium and fosinopril in patients with stage 1 to 3 hypertnesion. METHODS: In this comparative, open labelled, randomized, parallel study, the efficacy, safety and tolerability of once-daily losartan (50mg) versus once-daily fosinopril (10mg) were evaluated over twelve weeks in 96 patients with stage 1-3 hypertension. If trough sitting diastolic blood pressure was equal to or greater than 90mmHg after a 6 week treatment period, the dosage for both study drugs was doubled until the end of the study (week 12). RESULTS: After 6 weeks of treatment, mean reductions in trough sitting diastolic blood pressure were 7.4mmHg (95% confidence interval 5.0-9.9) with 50mg losartan and 6.7mmHg (95% confidence interval 4.4-9.2)with 10mg fosinopril. After 12 weeks of treatment (after dose titration), mean reductions in trough sitting diastolic blood pressure were 9.4mmHg (95% confidence interval 6.7-12.1) with losartan and 10.3mmHg (95% confidence interval 7.6-12.9) with fosinopril. At weeks 6 and 12, there were no dignificant difference in the mean reduction of through ditting diastolic blood pressure between the losartan group and the fosinopril group. Losartan and fosinopril were well tolerated without significant clinical and laboratory adverse reactions. The incidence of dry cough was lower in the losartan group than in the fosinopril group but not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: The antihypertensive effect of once-daily administration of losartan is similar to that of once-daily administration of fosinopril in patients with hypertension. Both losartan and fosinopril are well tolerated without significant adverse reaction.
