1.Computerization of Microscope Slide Labelling.
Korean Journal of Pathology 1997;31(7):628-634
The automation in surgical pathology, particularly in the reporting and encoding system using personal computers has been greatly improved in recent years, but the computerization of microscope slide labelling has not been improved. The authors have developed database program for slide labelling using FoxPro 2.5 and FoxBASE SCOUNIX 2.1.2: For I year during trial an effect has been put forward to simplify and organize the labelling work in routine surgical pathology. The program is now become easily applicable to the labelling work without disturbing the normal flow in a pathology laboratory. It is possible to get information concerning how many paraffin blocks and H&E slides have been made, as well as what kind of special stains have been requested for each case. The authors think that the computerization of labelling work in routine surgical pathology is a fairly easy task, and this should simplify the labelling work at a lower cost, diminish the workload of a typist or technician, and indirect information concerning the workload in a pathology laboratory can be calculated.

Korean Journal of Pathology 1998;32(11):1008-1014
There is no definite histological criteria which can predict the biologic behavior of meningiomas, although resectability is the most important factor in terms of recurrence. For grading meningiomas, various factors have been studied, such as hypercellularity, nuclear pleomorphism, small cells with high N/C ratio, prominent nucleoli (PN), frequent mitosis, loss of architecture, focal necrosis (FN). We investigated 116 meningiomas to evaluate the correlation between the factors and the proliferative activity using AgNORs and MIB-1 labelling index (LI). They were divided into 3 groups: Group A includes meningiomas with none of the factors; group B with one of the factors; group C with two or more factors. MIB-1 LI was correlated with each factor, but AgNORs was not. There was a statistical difference among group A (<1.28%), B (2.7%) and C (5.1%) (p<0.05) using MIB-1 LI. FN was the most frequently associated with other factors, and it had the highest MIB-1 LI (6.31%). MIB-1 LI of group B was 5.1 2.3%. In group B, the most frequent combination was FN and PN, and it showed the highest MIB-1 LI (5.74%). This study indicates that FN and PN are important for diagnosis of atypical meningioma, and MIB-1 LI appears to be a useful method for estimating the proliferative activity of meningiomas, and 5% or more of MIB-1 LI could help in making a diagnosis of atypical meningioma.

PURPOSE: It is reported that 65% of diabetic male patients over 60 of their age are impotent. However, there is no report concerning the effect of serum glucose control on erectile dysfunction in diabetic patient. This study was performed to evaluate the effects of serum glucose control on erectile dysfunction. MATERIALS AMD METHODS: The development of Diabetes mellitus was defined that the serum glucose level was above 200mg/dL in random test at 25 weeks. We designed the experimental specimen into 3 groups; group I: diabetic OLETF (Otsuka Long Evans Tokushima Fatty) rats without blood sugar control (n=10), group II: diabetic OLETF rats with blood sugar control with 4U insulin subcutaneous injection daily from 26 to 46 weeks (n=10), group III: diabetic OLETF rats with blood sugar control with 10U insulin subcutaneous injection daily from 26 to 46 weeks (n=10). We estimated the collagen content of penile tunica albuginea with the scanning electron microscopy and observed the endothelial layers of corpus cavernosum with the transmission electron microscopy in each group. RESULTS: The serum glucose level was 249 +/- 4.1mg/dL, 234 +/- 2.7mg/dL, 215 +/- 3.0mg/dL respectively in group I, II, III, and decreased in order of group II, III. The differences among groups were statistically significant (p<0.05). The thickness of collagen bundles of penile tunica albuginea was 0.98 +/- 0.1 micrometer, 0.94 +/- 0.3 micrometer, 0.92 +/- 0.1 micrometer respectively in group I, II, III, and decreased in order of group II, III. The differences among groups were statistically significant (p<0.05). The endothelial layers of corpus cavernosum were decreased in II, III. CONCLUSIONS: The serum glucose control in diabetic rats decreases the collagen con tents in penile tunica albuginea and the endothelial layers of corpus cavernosum.

Korean Journal of Preventive Medicine 1995;28(2):473-486
A hospital-based, matched case-control study was carried out to evaluate the relation ship of various suspected risk factors including snoring and serum level of cholesterol to cerebrovascular disease in Korea. A total of 127 incident cases of cerebrovascular disease(74 cases of cerebral infarction and 53 cases of intracerebral hemorrhage) admitted to the department of neurology in a university hospital from December, 1993 to March, 1995 were compared with 127 matched controls admitted to same hospital in same period. A multivariate analysis suggested that ECG abnormality(left ventricular hypertophy and atrial fibrillation), family history of cerebrovascular disease, fundoscopic abnormality, previous history of transient ischemic attack and hypercholesterolemia were risk factors of cerebrovascular disease. ECG abnormality, fundoscopic abnormality, smoking and hypercholesterolemia were also suggested as risk factors of cerebral infarction.

Mycobiology 2001;29(2):107-109
Anthracnose symptoms severely occurred up to 50% on leaves of English ivy growing in greenhouses in Cheongwon area of Korea during disease survey in April, 2000. The symptoms developed as concentric spots with dot-like acervuli on leaves of the plant. A total of 24 isolates of Colletotrichum sp. were obtained from the spotted lesions and identified as Colletotrichum trichellum based on the morphological and cultural characteristics. Leaf spots similar to the original anthracnose symptoms were induced on the host leaves by artificial inoculation with the isolates of the fungus. This is the first record of C. trichellum causing anthracnose of English ivy in Korea.

Journal of the Korean Radiological Society 1983;19(3):637-641
The simple chest X-ray study is essential in diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis, especially primary pulmonarytuberculosis. Authers analyzed the chest films and tuberculin tests of 521 cases which are suspected primarypulmonary tuberculosis coinically, from Jan. 1978 to Nov. 1982 at Seoul Red Cross Hospital. The results are asfollows; 1. Among the total 521 cases, the 115 cases of chst film reveal 245 probable pulmonary tuberculouslesions. 2. The coincidence of the parenchymal and lymphnodal involvement are observed in 40 cases (34.8%) with137 lesions(55.9%), parenchymal only in 23 cases (20.0%) with 25 lesions(10.2%) and lymphnodal only in 52 cases(45.2%) with 83 lesions(33.9%). 3. In observing the distribution of the 83 parenchymal lesions, the right lung istwo times as common as that of the left, being the highest in the RLL field with 41 lesions(49.4%), the lowest inthe LLL field with 3 lesions(3.6%). 4. In observing the distribution of the 162 lymphnodal lesions, there are 95lesions(58.6%) in the right and 67 lesions(41.4%) in the left, involving hilar nodes with 150 lesions(92.6%) andmediastinal nodes with 12 lesions(7.4%). The incidence of unilateral involvement is 13 cases (11.3%) and bilateral79 cases (68.7%). 5. Among the total 245 lesions, 141 lesions(57.9%) are smaller than rice in size, 120lesions(49.0%) are amophous in shape and 186 lesions(75.9%) are mainly calcific in density. According to theincrease of age, count and detection rate of the lesion on the chest film are increased. 6. Tuberculin testsshowed 26.1% negative rate in 115 tuberculous cases, and 51% positive rate in 406 negative chest cases.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1986;24(1):142-144
Vulva syringomas are rare in reviewing literature. In our case, a 29-year-old had multiple papular lesions involving both sides of the vulva. Microscopically the lesion showed dilated cystic sweat ducts some of which have small comma like tails resembling tadpoles. It is the purpose of this report to present a rare case of syringoma which was limited to the vulva without involvement of other sites.
