Objective To study the effect of Tibetan MedicineManu-Xitanggranules on the expression of prostaglandin E2 and TNF-a on adjuvant arthritis (AA) rats. Methods A total of 60 rats were randomly divided into the control group, the model group, the Aspirin group, the low-, medium- and high- dose Manu-Xitang granules groups (each group with 10). Complete Freund's adjuvant method was used for the adjuvant arthritis model except the control group. All the groups started treatment at 8th day, and the treatment last 20 days. The low-, middle- high-dosage groups were treated with 2.0, 1.0, 0.5g/(kg body weight) Manu-Xitang granules, while the the Aspirin group with ASP (0.27 g/kg), control and medol groups with the equal Volume saline. The body weight, the swelling of primary side of arthritis index were observed. The levels of PGE2 and TNF-α were measured by ELISA.Results At 6th, 12th, 18th day, compared with the model group, the body weights in Aspirin group, the low-, middle-, high-dosage groups significantly increased (P<0.05 or P<0.01); at the 6th day, the foot swelling (0.40% ± 0.18%, 0.50% ± 0.25%, 0.55% ± 0.35%vs. 0.85% ± 0.15%) in the Aspirin group, middle-, and high-dosage groups significantly decreased (P<0.05 or P<0.01). And the PGE2 (0.66 ± 0.31vs. 0.39 ± 0.11) and TNF-a (0.72 ± 0.24vs. 0.50 ± 0.15) in the high- dose group were significantly lower than the model group (P<0.05).Conclusions The Tibetan medicineManu-Xitanggranules could treat AA through the changes of PGE2 and TNF-a.
4. Effect of basic salt and mixed salt-alkali stress tolerance on seed germination and seedling physiological characteristics of Astraglus membranaceus var. mongholicus
Chinese Traditional and Herbal Drugs 2013;44(12):1661-1666
Objective: To compare the effects of Na2CO3 and NaCl + Na2CO3 at different concentration on the seed germination and seedling physiological characteristics of Astraglus membranaceus var. mongholicus, analyze the stress degrees of the both two on A. membranaceus var. mongholicus, and search for the effective ways for improving the resistance of seeds and seedlings under salt stress. Methods: Several physiological indexes of A. membranaceus var. mongholicus seeds under different salt treatments, such as the germination vigor (Gv), germination rate (Gr), relative germination rate, and relative salt damage rate were measured. And other indexes of the seedlings like chlorophyll contents, soluble protein contents, the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA), the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), and peroxidase (POD) were also measured. Results: Na2CO3 and NaCl + Na2CO3 at lower concentration could promote the seed germination but inhibit the seed germination at higher concentration. The inhibition was increased with the concentration increasing. The germination indexes of each treatment had the significant differences compared with the control (P < 0.05). With the salt concentration increasing, the contents of chlorophyll and the soluble protein decreased, which was negatively correlated with the concentration. The content of MDA was increased and positively correlated with the concentration. The change trend of SOD activity showed the first increase and then decreased with the salt concentration increasing, which was similar to that of POD. The activities of both SOD and POD reached the peak at 50 mmol/L. Conclusion: The stress of NaCl + Na2CO3 is higher than that of Na2CO3 on the seeds and seedlings of A. membranaceus var. mongholicus.

AIM: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of macular ganglion cell - inner plexiform layer ( GCIPL ) measurements using high- definition optical coherence tomography ( Cirrus HD - OCT ) ganglion cell analysis algorithm for detecting early and moderate to severe glaucoma.
METHODS:Twenty normal control persons, 26 patients with early glaucoma and 29 patients with moderate to severe glaucoma were enrolled in this study. Macular GCIPL, optic nerve head ( ONH ) parameters and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer ( RNFL ) thickness were measured in each subject. Then all measured results of each parameter were calculated using SPSS17. 0. Areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves ( AUC) of each parameter were calculated to compare the diagnostic accuracy for detecting early and moderate to severe glaucoma.
RESULTS: For detecting early glaucoma, AUC of average RNFL and seven clock value of RNFL were the biggest ( 0. 871 and 0. 896 respectively ), the AUC of parameters in GCIPL were also significant, among them,
the average GCIPL showed bigger AUC(0. 847) than the minimum GCIPL (0. 812). For diagnosing moderate to severe glaucoma, the AUC of rim area was 0. 992, which was bigger than that of average RNFL ( 0. 991 ). The minimum GCIPL showed bigger AUC ( 0. 983 ) than the average GCIPL (0. 967). For early glaucoma diagnosis, the sensitivity of average RNFL was the highest (76. 9%), while the average GCIPL has the highest specificity (93. 5%).
CONCLUSION: AS a new diagnostic parameter for detecting glaucoma, GCIPL shows similar diagnostic potential compared with RNFL. For early glaucoma diagnosis, average RNFL is the most important parameter, while screening early glaucoma, average GCIPL should be paid more attention.

Objective: To observe the difference in clinical efficacy between acupuncture with point selection based on syndrome differentiation along the meridians and acupuncture at non-meridian and non-acupoint points for functional dyspepsia (FD). Methods: A total of 74 FD patients were randomized into an observation group and a control group, with 37 cases in each group. Both groups received acupuncture treatment. Zusanli (ST 36) and Neiguan (PC 6) were selected in the observation group, with Taichong (LR 3) and Neiting (ST 44) added for excess syndrome, and Gongsun (SP 4) and Yinlingquan (SP 9) added for deficiency syndrome. Four non-meridian and non-acupoint points were selected in the control group. The treatments in both groups were performed once a day with a 2-day break after 5 consecutive treatments, which constituted one treatment course. A total of 4 courses were performed. The scores of Nepean dyspepsia index (NDI) and Leeds dyspepsia questionnaire (LDQ) were recorded before and after treatment, and during follow-up (8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 weeks after recruitment) to assess the clinical efficacy. Results: The NDI scores in the two groups after treatment and at each time point during follow-up were higher than those before treatment (all P<0.05), and the LDQ scores were lower than those before treatment (all P<0.05). The NDI scores after treatment and at each time point during follow-up in the observation group were higher than those in the control group (all P<0.01); the total LDQ score and scores of upper abdominal pain, postprandial satiety and upper abdominal burning sensation after treatment and at each time point during follow-up in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P<0.01 or P<0.05).. Conclusion: Acupuncture with point selection based on syndrome differentiation along the meridians has a better curative effect than acupuncture at non meridian and non-acupoint points in the treatment of FD.

OBJECTIVEIn order to get the method for improving the salt resistance of Lycium ruthenium seeds and seedlings under NaCl stress, the seed germination and physiological characteristics of L. ruthenium seedlings was studied.
METHODSeveral physiological indexes of L. ruthenium seeds under NaCl stress, such as the germination rate (Gr), germination vigor (Gv), germination index (Gi), vigor index (Vi), and relative salt damage rate were measured. Other indexes of the seedlings like relative water contents (RWC) , chlorophyll contents, soluble protein contents, electrolyte leakage, the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA), and peroxidase (POD) were also measured.
RESULTNaCl at lower concentration could promote the seed germination but inhibit the seed germination at higher concentration. After the treatment by CaCl2 at the different concentrations, all germination indexes were increased. With the increase of salt concentration, the relative water contents and the contents of chlorophyll were decreased, the content of MDA and electrolyte leakage were increased. The change trend of POD activity showed the first increase and then decrease with the increase of salt concentration, which was similar to that of the soluble protein. After the treatment by CaCl2, relative water contents, chlorophyll and POD activities were decreased more slowly, and also electrolyte leakage and MDA contents increased slowly.
CONCLUSIONThe CaCl2 could significantly alleviate the damages to the seeds and seedlings of L. ruthenium under NaCl stress, and promote the salt resistance to the seeds and seedlings of L. ruthenium.
