PURPOSE: This study was designed to identify effects of self-esteem and health status on adaptation of elderly residents in facilities. METHODS: The sample consisted of 151 elderly residents. The data collected from January to April 2010 were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression. Using instruments were self-esteem scale (SES) (Rosenberg, 1965), Korean health status measure for the elderly (KoHSME) (Shin et al, 2002), and nursing home adaptation scale (Lee, 2007). RESULTS: The mean scores of self-esteem (2.90+/-0.71), health status (2.15+/-0.53) and adaptation (2.98+/-0.44) of elderly residents in facilities were above the average. Self-esteem was significantly varied according to religion, economic status and living expenses. Health status was significantly different according to age, disease and motivation of getting into the facilities. Adaptation was significantly different according to religion, satisfaction of facilities and decision maker of getting into the facilities. Significant correlations were found between self-esteem, health status and adaptation. Self-esteem and health status were influencing factors of adaptation (22.6%). CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that perceived self-esteem and health status may be requirements for promoting adaptation of elderly residents in facilities. These results could be utilized in the development of supportive programs for elderly adaptation.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects of a cinema therapy-based group reminiscence program on depression and ego integrity of elderly people in a nursing home. METHODS: A nonequivalent control group pretest posttest design was conducted. The participants were 45 elderly people from one nursing home, 23 in the experimental group, and 22 in the control group. They were recruited from a nursing home in G city. The cinema therapy program was provided for 90 minutes once a week for 10 sessions. Data were collected from June to August, 2013. Data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 20.0. RESULTS: After the intervention, the group who participated in the showed increased self-integrity (t=4.29, p<.001) and decreased depression (t=5.01, p<.001) compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study suggest that the group reminiscence program using the cinema as in this study is effective in increasing ego integrity and decreasing depression of elderly people in nursing homes.

PURPOSE: This research is to understand the effects of senior simulation on employees of elderly care facilities and utilize it in their job training. METHODS: This research is a nonequivalence control group pre-to-post quasiexperiment research. 18 employees who have experienced senior simulation are set as test group and 18 other employees who have not experienced senior simulation are set as control group. RESULTS: The hypothesis that 'the test group which has experienced senior simulation will show a positive change in their attitude on elderly care, compared to the control group' and 'the test group which has experienced senior simulation will show a positive change in understanding of elders, compared to the control group' was supported. The hypothesis that 'the test group which has experienced senior simulation will show a positive change in job satisfaction and performance of duties, compared to the control group' was dismissed. CONCLUSION: The senior simulation seems to contribute to elderly care facilities employees' change in their viewpoints of elders and broaden their understanding of them. The senior simulation was meaningful to provide basic help with implementing job training programs.

This paper proposed a mobile vital-signs monitoring system based on ZigBee localization and wireless transmission technology for the elderly in nursing home. The system can monitor the vital-signs (pulse, ECG and blood oxygen), localize human body and warn in emergency. The validity and accuracy of this system were testified by the experiments of mobile acquisition and storage of pulse. In these experiments, the measurement of pulse ranged from 50 to 170 time a minute, the mean error of which was less than 3%. The mean error of localizing was less than 4 m. And the data transmission rate was 250 kbps. The system, which effectively conducts the real-time monitoring of the health and safety situation for the elderly, has a great significance for protecting the elderly's life safety.

PURPOSE: This study was performed to evaluate and compare health conservation and its related factors of elders in assisted living facilities or nursing homes. METHOD: Data for health conservation was collected from 316 elders in 10 institutions in Daegu city and Kyungpook province from February 1st to February 22nd, 2005. Data was collected by a structured questionnaire that included general characteristics, general health status, health conservation, functional health status (ADL, IADL) and depression (GDS-K) scales. The collected data was analyzed by the SPSS (version 11.5) program including descriptive statistics, t-test, -test, Pearson's correlation and stepwise method regression analysis. RESULT: The elders in assisted living facilities revealed lower scores in health conservation, ADL and IADL than the elders in nursing homes. Predictable variables influencing health conservation of the elders in assisted living facilities were depression and MAC (Mid-Arm Circumference) that is equal to .270, and the the elders in nursing home were depression, IADL, degree of sleep, and TSF (Triceps Skin Fold) that is equal to .409. CONCLUSION: The development of a health conservation program and long-term health care service system for elders in assisted living facilities are needed than for the elders in nursing homes.

PURPOSE: The goal of the study was to understand the experiences of life among nursing home residents. METHODS: Qualitative study was conducted using Colaizzi's phenomenological method. The participants were 11 people aged 76-96 years in two nursing homes in Korea. RESULTS: Nine themes were identified: giving up on one self, growing apart from familiar relationships, perceiving the monotony of daily life as suffering, feeling anxious about one's future upon observing other residents, being dissatisfied with the lack of consideration for individualized care, developing interpersonal skills for communal life, missing the daily routines of their past lives, feeling optimistic about living in a nursing home, and having a strategy for the remainder of life in the nursing home. CONCLUSION: The results of this study confirmed the positive and negative emotions that elderly people typically experience while in nursing homes. Nurses should educate the families of nursing home residents, so that the family can better respect elderly people's opinions and provide them with adequate support. Furthermore, nurses must not only provide reliable support, resources and serve as advocates, but they must also pay more attention to the environment of the nursing home to make it feel like home to the elderly residents.

Dementia caregivers suffer a considerable care burden. They are confronted with a high rate of economic burden, psychological morbidity, social isolation, physical ill-health and financial hardship. Although many researchers have tried to determine the influence of the stressors in dementia caregiving on caregivers, the results remain inconclusive. However, many kinds of psychosocial interventions have been demonstrated to reduce caregivers'psychological symptoms and delay nursing home admission. Caregiver characteristics rather than objective care needs tend to be responsible for a caregiver's psychological symptoms. Future research should focus on individualizing treatment approach and developing partnerships with health professionals as well as disseminating general information about dementia caregiving.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the motivational interviewing (MI) dementia preventive intervention on dementia preventive behaviors, depression and cognitive function among elderly over 75 years of age in nursing homes. METHODS: A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. A total of 57 participants were divided into three groups; 18 in the MI dementia preventive intervention (Group A), 20 in the dementia preventive program (Group B) and 19 in the control group. Dementia preventive behaviors, depression, and cognitive function were assessed at pre, post, and 1 month after the intervention. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and repeated measure ANOVA. RESULTS: The results reported that there were significant differences in dementia preventive behaviors and depression among Group A, B, and C. Also, there were significant differences in dementia preventive behaviors and cognitive function during time periods. There was a significant interaction between groups and times in relation to depression. Results suggested that the effects of MI dementia preventive program was persistent after 1 month following the intervention. CONCLUSION: Further research needs to develop dementia preventive programs considering physical and mental traits of the elderly in late years staying at nursing homes.
